    Workflow Request

If you have a working workflow for EX, P2, 24F or any other unusal (or new) format, it would be nice to have a posted resource for them all (sticky?). I'll also try to cull the forums for solutions and post them here (in my spare time)...

    EX 35 Import for x.8

    EX1 @ 35Mbps, 1080p (Clip Browser 1.01) - Windows only for conversion

    1. Use Sony's Browser to copy source clips from the SxS card to a hard drive. (Copy the actual files, don't convert to MXF.)
    2. Use Brad Kean's XDCAM EX to Avid Script: http://www.entitynine.com/xdcamex/XDCAM_EX_to_Avid_0.5.zip

Choose the DNxHD format that you will be working in (XpressPro only supports 115 and 145 - so if you want the fast import option you can't use 36)

Now you can import the DNxHD files of your EX clips into any Avid editor (Mac or PC). Note: This strips the clips of their TC and Metadata - so it is not a perfect solution.

    Re: Workflow Request

    Mo' better EX1 @ 35 Mb/s workflow coming soon:

Did a test tonight using Clip Browser 2.0 (beta...due out in June).  Use Clip Browser to convert MP4 files to MXF for NLE.  Drop resulting files directly into a Avid bin.  MXF media is automatically copied into Avid MediaFiles folder and the clips can be either edited as 35 Mb/s native 1920x1080 or transcoded to DNX using Media Composer 2.8.3 software (imminent).  Copying SxS media via Express Card slot takes about 4 minutes for a 8 GB card.  Using USB 2.0 takes...well it seemed like forever, probably 2-3 x slower.  We transcoded the material to DNX175 and projected it via HD-SDI to a 2K DLP projector onto a 20 ft. screen.  Wow!  No compression artifacts, sharp lens, chromatic aberrations not visible, outstanding dynamic range.  Very impressive pictures from a "inexpensive" camera.

Of note: 25 Mb/s SP mode results in 29.97 frame rate clips even if shot "24p" since 24p HDV doesn't exist yet outside of the HVR-V7U and the HVR-270U cameras and the new Sony HDV decks.  There isn't a way to remove the 3:2 pulldown in HD material as is be done in SD because HD has 24p native frame rates so there isn't any (theoretical) need to do pulldown removal.

MacPro, MacBook Pro and a Cube. The Cube doesn't do much but it looks cool. [view my complete system specs]
Must think of something clever to go here...

Uh, no.  Suffice it to say the test involved borrowing a laptop rather than installing software.

O.K., well... test away, and I hope everything works out.  Can't wait for June.

    EX 35 Import for x.8.3

    EX1 @ 35Mbps (Clip Browser 1.01) - Windows only for conversion

    1. Use Sony's Browser (under Windows) to export source clips as MXF conversion from the SxS card to a your hard drive.
    2. In x.8.3 and up (Mac or PC) - import the new MXF files into a bin (they will fast import as XDCAM files)
