Yeah, and from the sound of it, when it comes to Avid's audio code it is probably every 3rd line of code Wink [;)]

At the risk of being flip, get an Audigy.

Possible solution to the Realtek High Definition sound trouble

    Hi ,

just wanted to add my two cents to this issue since i found a solution that works fine for my system,

When i tried to run Media Composer on my system with an Asrock ConroeXfire core 2 duo motherboard with onboard Realtek High Definition Sound, i got the "failed to initialise sound" error upon which media composer hung and i had to restart.

Of course i updated my sound driver but still no go. however i found a solution that worked without buying a new soundcard and now Media composer is working fine!

What i did was take a look in my systems bios and i noticed the realtec HD sound setting to be on "AUTO".. that kinda gave me an itch so i changed the setting to "Enabled" restarted windows, started Media Composer and.. Voila! worked like a charm!

Naturally i don't know if this will work for everyone using a Realtek HD sound chip, but i hope it will at least help some of you people out there having trouble getting it to work with AVID software.

    Regards and Good Luck.

The setup change also worked on my ASRock 4CoreDual-VSTA.

    Thanks!

Re: Possible solution to the Realtek High Definition sound trouble

Hello everyone, I have a big problem I can't find solution to... Avid doesn't recognise the sound card... I have this following message: Can't find any audio cards in your system. You will not be able to play audio. We have checked all the drivers, we have looked for every possibilities but we are now stuck... We have windows XP pro, SP2, M Box, motherboard P5N-E SLI... Please tell me there is a way to find a solution to it... The sound work for any other application, it's just Avid that doesn't find it... Thanks for your help... we are going crazy! It seems that no one has found a solution to the problem and we urgently need to get this to work or we may loose a great project... and this is out of the question, we have been working for this for a long time and my pals are getting very nervous around me... I have checked all the forum for a solution and I find nothing we haven't tried... We are using a M Box normally supported by Avid as it is the same company that built it... We are now checking with a DSChannel.txt that we heard should solve it, but we tried and nothing... Unfortunatly for us, we are not very rich and can't buy again new sound cards, but again, what we have should be compatible as it's digitool, the same company... We are very tight in time, one day lost is very dangerous, we have been trying to solve this for a week now... Thanx thanx again, all I have is the internet to answer my problems...

Same problem on a new laptop. In the bios no way to change the realtec audio HD. My solution is:

I took am soundblaster USB hardware, installed the drivers and Avid works also if the card is no longer connected!

    Or try this:

    1. Download and install Total Recorder (use virtual soundcard)

    2. Run it.

    3 - Start Avid.
4 - Go to "Sound card configuration" and select "use windows mixer"
5 - Uninstall external sound card and use Realtek normaly.
    6. Smile!

    Re: Realtek driver

    Hi,

I've not heard anything about a Soundblaster Connect card.  The only ones I've seen successful posts about are the Soundblaster Audigy 2 and the Soundblaster Audigy SE.

Other things you can try are:

    1.  Unplugging any other USB items (webcams, microphones, printers, etc).

    2.  Change your audio properties in your Windows Mixer settings (try every option available to you).

    3.  Download different audio drivers.

    good luck,

    Re: Realtek driver

Hurrah - I got this working eventually, by takign the advice on here to try a different sound card.  Initially I tried the virtual sound cards, no joy at all.  Next I tried a £5 plug and pray USB sound card thingy ( a bit like a memory stick in form factor), no joy, bought a £13 (as cheap as I could find) internal sound card, but then read the box and checked the manufacturers website, no Vista drivers, so finally...

Maplin (in the UK) sell £25 USB Sound Cards under the name GStar UB-003 - seems to work a treat.  Xpress Pro 5.8.4 now runs on my quad-core intel desktop (a Packard Bell x2415 if anyone's interested - as cheap a quad-core as I could find on the high street in a rush), onboard nvida GeForce graphics card (w 256M Ram), and this external sound card - and I didn't even need to break the warranty seal on the box installing a proper sound card - frankly for £25 it's a big big win.

Next battle will be installing a firewire card (I guess that's what you get with a cheapo system like this - but I can still capture through my old system)...

WXPSP2 on Acer Aspire 2020 bolstered up to 2G RAM, 2GHz Centrino, 128MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9700, Avid XpressPro 5.3 - full commercial license, just in... [view my complete system specs]

Re: Possible solution to the Realtek High Definition sound trouble

    Hi,

    THANX, it definitely worked.

If U guys have any problems with Realtek HD Audio (I used to get a message: "failed to initialize sound" when Avid starting), this might be the right way how to get rid of it.

    1. Download and install Total Recorder

    2. Run it (and leave it running)

    3. Go to Control panel - Sounds and Audio...

    4. in tab Audio change Sound playback to Total Recorder audio device

    5. Start Avid (should not get any error message)

    6. Go to "Sound card configuration" and select checkbox "Use windows mixer"

    7. Try play some audio/video clip back (should play normally)

    8. Quit Avid

    9. Go to Control panel - Sounds and Audio...

    10. in tab Audio change Sound playback back to Realtek

    11. Quit and/or Uninstall (but can keep it in the system, doesn't matter) Total Recorder

    12. Run Avid

    13. In the "Sound card configuration" you can deselect checkbox "Use windows mixer" but can keep it selected, up to you

    Wow, MAGIC!!!

    Fingers crossed.

    Matthew.
