You need to buy an approved notebook if you want it to work with Avid. There may be another reason why the audio isn't working for you.
Where does any say it works? I didn't see itin the readme for 5.2.1.

The closest Avid has come to saying the Realtek is supported, is to say it has been "tested". Which means it works on one or more or all of the "approved/certified" machines. I make music videos so audio is real important to me. I have been trying to get a list of supported audio hardware from Avid for months. I have wasted quite a lot of money on audio hardware trying get decent audio out of Xpress Pro. Every piece of audio hardware I've bought and trashed worked in every single application on my computer except Xpress Pro.
Make sure your Realtek drivers are up to date. I'm sure you done that though. If that doesn't work, you may have to look into another audio solution. Again, I suggest you try some of the USB solutions..

All of those links were for products that are less than $100.
I understand your frustrations (believe me I share them). It would be nice to have the built in audio work with the built-in speakers. I honestly don't understand why Xpress Pro is so picky with audio hardware. I've never seen an application that was so picky about audio.

The Audigy 2 ZS I have works without problems. Do the USB and PCMCIA Soundblaster cards work too?
(I should have said in my post that I want an audio card of a more professional quality than a "gaming" soundblaster card; e.g. good ASIO drivers and balanced outputs, etc. That is where I've wasted so much money...)
Hey Guys,
I just want to tell you, that I finally got Avid Xpress Pro HD 5.2.1 to work!
If you use the Realtek High Definition Audio Card, please update the driver of your sound card and reboot your system. I can promise that i will work definitely!I just created that thread because me and other Realtek sound card users had the same problems...
Well guys.. Here is the FINAL SOLUTION!
Thank you for all your supports!
Bump....Joined thread with original so everyone could see proposed solution. Thanks EHS for solution and thanks to Solopost for joining suggestion.

This thread is going in cricles. You said it was working, why did you revert back to 4.6 if you got it to work in 5.2.1?
Bottom line, you should have done the research and bought an approved laptop, it's no ones fault but your own that it isn't working. Doing a simple search for RealTek on this forum would have brough you to multiple threads saying that audio codec doesn't work, I had the exact problem a few months ago with a new desktop system that I built.

Uh... how do you expect we, the customers, of Xpress Pro force it to work on unsupported equipment?
How about if we force Xpress Pro to support HDV on the Mac right now? Heck while we are working miracles, I'd like us all to wave our magic wands and make Xpress Pro output crisp, clean HDV through a Decklink HD card!
More seriously...
Realtek High Definition only started to work with one of the 5.x versions. So you have two options, get sound hardware that will work with the version Xpress Pro you want to run or run the version of Xpress Pro that supports your sound hardware.
I understand your frustrations. If you could see the closet shelf full of hardware I wasted money on trying to get it to work with Xpress Pro, you would understand that, but you need to be realistic. Creating patches to old versions; e.g. changing 4.6.1 to use Realtek High Definition; isn't an option.
In fact if audio is that important to you, most of the sound hardware I posted (even the $60 one) is better quality than a Realtek chip, IMHO.
jordi verified in your thread (on the same topic) from Avid Xpress DV forum http://www.avid.com/exchange/forums/39058/ShowPost.aspx that the sound blaster audigy external sound card works well for him on his laptop. I have a Realtek sound chip on my Xpress Pro machine's motherboard and an Audigy and the Audigy sounds a lot better than the Realtek (of course that is my opinion).

Hi mate,
I have the same nonsense with FreeDV too.
I've a part solution the software will load and run if you disable the card beforehand, great if you edit in one of these new 'open plan' hot desking companies as the resulting lack of sound won't disturb your co-workers!!!
I know it isn't a solution really but it goes part way to explain how the software is affecting the card and not vice-versa (you can re-enable the card when the Avid SW boots)
Only good for picture montages at this stage with this audio card
Come on AVID let's get our fingers out or post a more updated solution?
Best

Hey David, or anyone who can help me - I saw your interaction with ladireccion regarding the sound card issue. I followed your advice in your reponse to him and purchased a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 CS card. It worked fine for a session. But now when I open AVID (4.6), I consistantly get this message: "can't find any audio card on your system. you will not be able to play any audio." So, suddenly AVID does not recognize the card. My computer, however, does see the card and uses it for iTunes or whatever other sound related application.
I am days behind on prepping - please help!!
thanksParker
