    Re: Audio Capture Problem

Just curious, did you try actually recording to a piece of dv tape while capturing? I had a similar situation where I had to actually physically record to a piece of tape before the full signal would make it through into AXP. This was with a dsr-1800. Assuming you're serial controlling your vhs deck so the TC reference will still be there...?

    Re: Audio Capture Problem

love avid's terms for these little problems... believe me, this problem becomes critical when you're trying to get high quality picture from the Pioneer DVDR and you're trying to work quickly (and this is how you've worked for every release UP UNTIL NOW)...

ripping dvd's takes way too long and the degredation on s-video is too noticeable...

would LOVE to have this fixed...

Does anyone know if this has been fixed in any of the 5.7 versions (5.7.2 has just been released).

    Re: Audio Capture Problem

excuse my french, but, WTF?  This problem has persisted since the fall and Avid can't get around to fixing it?  I am all but about to give up and go FCP because my business can't digitize on 5.6 from a VHS deck with no TC through a converter with no deck control.  THIS WORKS FINE WITH 4.8.4, but guess what, I'm stuck with an old OS using 4.8.4 and I'm getting sick and fed up with waiting for this update to be termed "really effing important".  This may not effect all users, but a number of us are SEVERLY EFFECTED BY THIS.

    PLEASE FIX IT IMMEDIATELY.

    Re: Audio Capture Problem

BLKDOG, do you know if there is any expected release date from Avid when a fix will be available? I see that people on the PC side are having some issues as well...  I just sent an email to Marianna to see if she's heard anything lately.  Is this also an issue with Mojo's or just non-Avid hardware? I'm currently running XPro 5.7.2 (currently downloading 5.7.3) on OS X 10.4.9 with QT 7.1.6 and a Promax DA-MAX+ transcoder and having the same no audio capture issue. Another useful option would be the ability to record video over 1394 and audio via analog input (ie built-in or other audio card), but I don't know how feasible that is either. Is this something that could be expedited or solved with an Avid support contract?

    Re: Audio Capture Problem

You want bugs fixed by buying an assurance contract? Not likely. Assurance doesn't grant you any special favors.

I do know that Avid has this on the bug list. They never give release dates for updates.

    Re: Audio Capture Problem

Here's a thought for a workaround; anybody else got thoughts on this?...

From what I've read on the PC forums and given the symptoms, it appears that lack of timecode is the problem causing no audio during capture, given that capturing from tape appears to be fine.  If there was a way to input timecode into the system, seems like the problem should go away.  Don't know about other transcoders, but my Promax DA-MAX+ can input timecode via RS-422; I believe there are also some USB to RS-232 or RS-422 adapters out there that might work for this.  So the easiest would be to have a time code generator that just continually spits timecode into the system, relieving the problem. However, seems like most of these are several hundred dollars or more. The other option is to take the actual timecode from the source, be it LTC or VITC. I'm thinking of something like Sony's LANC terminal or JVC's JLIP control or something to that affect as I believe these carry timecode as well as machine control.  Anybody got the gear to try this? Other timecode variations that might work?

    Re: Audio Capture Problem

I've been capturing audio directly from audio cassettes by doing the following.:
I patch the audio directly to the mac's line input using a standard sound card cable (stereo mini to rca Y)
Then I set the capture tool to "no deck" with the deck selector toggle.
This allows me to select "line In" instead of OHCI host from the audio source pulldown.
Then I crank the audio input level on both the Avid's audio tool & the mac.
This works great for audio only. I never tried it with a vhs source sending both A & V but if you leave the video source selector on OHCI (bypassing mojo, of course) you might be able to capture your transcoded video & direct audio simultaneously. Slip sync if necessary.

    Re: Audio Capture Problem

Yeah, tried this one. Unfortunately, when you select OHCI as the video input source and arm the tracks, it defaults the audio to OHCI as well. If you try to change the audio input settings, it will disarm the video track. Thanks for the input though.

    Re: Audio Capture Problem

    Bump

So this is a bug that was created in an upgrade. Damn I wish I had never upgraded to 5.7.3. Definately won't be upgrading my G5 4.8  to tiger now and will consider moving my whole facility to  final cut if this bug is not fixed quickly. I must do location work using DSR40/45 decks as a transcoder and if avid won't work I will be forced to switch.

What is the progress on this BLKDOG

    regards
