Viewing Media Files outside of MC

I have a bunch of old external hard drives containing AvidMediaFiles.   Is there a way of viewing these without using MC?

Small and light, MPC-HC (Media Player Classic - Home Cinema) has been my go-to for years.

Not sure what to say, it's definitely working here.  64-bit version, not black.

I find VLC bloated, but if it's working for you, that's what matters.

    mea culpa!

playing around once again with the regular version 64bit, i was able to open files from within the app.

but i didn't find a way to conveniently click open the files directly from an avid folder... :-(

MPV is a free, cross-platform open source player that will play all sorts of media files, including the MXF OP Atom files found in the Avid Mediafiles/MXF/1 folder. Make sure you read the Help file on the shortcut keys, as some of these aren't obvious from the player screen.

It also can play HDR files on non-HDR displays, remapping the tonal levels to give a decent display on SDR monitors.

    VLC is fine,

it will play anything it has a codec for.

Which is a lot, but not everything you can encounter.

You can associate .mxf files with mpc-hc (or any player) through normal windows "open with."  (Some players --I'm looking at YOU VLC -- will just comandeer the function withoput asking your permission.)

i must me missing something obviously, but i'm gonna try in a very simplistic way to describe my work flow in this little insignificant fonction:

usual set up : default player: vlc

within avid mediafiles folder, i can double click on any file, and it will play instantly.

if i right click and chose open with "switch" for example, a double click on a file will also open it right away.

now, if i right click and chose open with "mpc", a double click everytime will ask me if i want to basically install the app, and if i do, it will install the app and nothing else...Confused

however, as i said before, taking many steps within "mpc" does allow me to open files, yes, but really not what i like to do...

in other words, i have NOT find a way to open files with "mpc" within an avid mediafiles folder by simply double clicking on it.

but, as my tag line says:   "the time you enjoy wasting is NOT wasted time..."  Wink
