Anyone working with SPL Electronics SMC 2489 Monitor Controller with MC?

Is anyone currently using a monitor controller like this with Media Composer instead of an analog mixer?

I would be interested in that as well. Or any cheaper alternatives.

I’ve used the cheaper TC Electronics Level Pilot.

I’m now using a HT pre-amp, because it has built-in audio delay options, plus it accepts audio over HDMI. Not using a mixer.

That Level Pilot looks so good. I need to cover off 5.1 from now on though.

I know we've discussed this a bit in the past Job, but you're always tweaking and perfecting your setup so... what HT pre-amp are you using now and does that mean you're not using powered monitor speakers?

With regards to the SPL SMC, I'm thinking this would work well with an AJA IO 4K, using the analogue DB-25 ouput to XLR and then connecting these to the analogue XLR inpus via the D-Sub 25 on the SMC.

I generally Blackmagic boxes as they are quieter (please fix yours fans AJA), but I'd have to start using de-embedders for BMD.

Still hopefull someone here has some experience and feedback on this box, it just looks like exactly what I'd want, but the devil is always in the details.

    Hi Mark,

I've got a Denon A7100 on one system and a Marantz AV8003 on my main system. Those are pre-amps with XLR outputs, so they drive my active speakers that way (I feed them HDMI). There's a whole bunch of high end home theater pre-amps* from Marantz, Yamaha and Onkyo/Integra that have XLR outputs. You can generally pick up older 5.1 models for not too much money, as current models are all 11.2 Atmos equipped etc.

I'd say: delay. You somehow still need to compensate for the program monitor's delay.

I'd been wishing for a box like the SPL ones, but one that would accept HDSDI and/or HDMI, and had analogue outputs, as it would be nice to have main volume on the desk.

The Level Pilot is OK, but indeed stereo, and you don't have any 'fixed' levels, whereas on the SPL (or on my pre-amps) you can have a few calibrated settings (I like to have 78dB and 85dB on there).

    *Pre-amps that appear to have XLR outputs: Marantz AV7005, 8003, 7701, 7702, 7703, 8801, 8802, Onkyo 5508, 5509 (same machines as Integra 80.2 and 80.3 -- or so I was told), Yamaha CX-A5000, A5100).

Denon Professional used to make the A7100 pre-amp, then the DN-500av pre-amp, then the DN-A700av -- but not sure if the latter has a manually controllable lipsync feature. The A7100 gave me an issue, as it would not accept 7.1 audio over HDMI (only 5.1), and the Nitris DX would only send out 2 or 8 channels (and the same applied to an AJA HDSDI->HDMI converter I have). There are boxes that let you modify the signal so it always presents itself as 5.1, but all of that becomes a hassle. My AV8003 eats the 7.1 PCM audio over HDMI anyway.

We are using both the SPL 5.1 and 7.1 version.

Both are wonderful, while the 7.1 is a bit more polished and more bells and whistles.

We use SDI de-embedders to feed it. Use Terranex to create a delay when needed. Patching is done through the video SDI router.

Hey Job, thanks for chiming in. First, I was under the impression that they wouldn't accept PCM 5.1 over HDMI but being a non-issue that is very nice to know.

How does a HT pre-amp help when leveling mikes and rough footage? With my mixer, I am constantly changing levels to avoid the dynamics of the direct sound. Do you use the levels on those pre-amps to control this or it comes treated by an assistant to you? Do would you keep the big preamp box within reach on you table?

    Cheers,

    Eduardo.

Re: Anyone working with SPL Electronics SMC 2489 Monitor Controller with MC?

I use the main volume knob as the main volume controller. But honestly, I generally just keep it at 78dB. I have channel strips in my dialogue channels, doing EQ (cut lows, roll off highs), a bit of expansion (noise reduction), and some compression. Often adding a de-esser, or sometimes the McDSP SA2 dialogue processor. Then I use clip gain to adjust levels where neede and sometimes ride Volume Automation on top of that. After cutting the scene, obviously.

I used to work with a mixer, in Direct Out, but wanted my levels to be more consistent when moving between systems, and when exporting.

Ah Dom, thank you for confirming. Thats great to hear. I'm pretty sold on these and have just heard about another large production who have gone this route as well which fills me with confidence.

Thanks for all this Job, amazing info as always. I'm sure this post alone will save a bunch of us many future headaches trying to figure out why a certain piece of kit won't do what we think it should!!!
