Connecting 2018 Macbook pro to Nexis E2...

I'm currently connecting to a Nexis E2 on a Mid 2014 15 inch Macbook Pro via a thunderbolt 2 to ethernet adpater and all is well.  I've been looking at upgrading to the 2018 model Macbook Pro which now features only Thunderbolt 3 ports.  What is the recommended way of connecting a Thunderbolt 3 device to an E2 Nexis? Do I need to use a 3>2 and then a 2>ethernet adapter chain? Is there a solution tha doesn't involve stupid levels of expensive apple dongles? I was unable to find a TB3 > Ethernet adapter on Apple's website, only TB2 > Ethernet...

    Thanks for any help,

Also, this would be a secondary laptop connecting to the same Nexis that the 2014 MBP is connecting to.  The 2018 MBP would be running Mojave not Sierra.  Would this be an issue in terms of client manager versions or Nexis versions? It's currently on client manager version 18.9.0.15 and Nexis version 18.9.0.15.  I'm not usually having to do this so please forgive my ignorance...

Mojave is currently not supported with NEXIS, you can subscribe to this KB to see when support is added.
Some people are using the Belkin USB C to Ethernet adapter with sucess.

The easiest is likley an Apple Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter and use the Apple Thunderbolt 2 to Ethernet adapter.

The only Thunderbolt 3 adapter is the ATTO Thunderlink Adapters, this is a relatively expensive solution for a 1GigE connection.

Thanks Bob, I've subscribed to that article.  Does Avid specifically approve these adapters or is it just a whatever works type situation?  For example CalDigit and Akitio both sell TB3 to ethernet solutions.  Would Avid certify things like TB3 adapters or is it just trial and error?

I'm waiting on the GFX card refresh to Vega that Apple say they are doing on the MBP line at the end of November so hopefully Nexis will get supported sooner rather than later, I'd just like to start preparing for it.

There is a very specific list of supported NICs. See page 16 on the Network and Switch Guide - Supported Network Interface Cards.

Ultimately it depends on the actual NIC used in the adapter and less about the box the adapter is in.

Thanks again Bob. I had a look at the list of supported NICs but these are all super expensive ATTO cards etc and nowhere does it list the Apple TB2 to Ethernet adapter as being a supported interface. I'm a bit confused as to why the $30 TB2>Ethernet adapter is provided by the hire company and is working fine for my Thunderbolt 2 connection but if I want to connect via Thunderbolt 3 then Avid is saying that I need to buy a $1400 ATTO card? Surely any decent TB3 > Ethernet adapter will do? Isn't the adapter just translating ethernet to TB3 and the network stuff is happening inside the MBP?

People must be using these new TB3 MBPs to connect to Nexis by now (using Sierra or High Sierra)? Would love to hear people's experiences.

    Cheers,

    Andi

The Apple Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter is listed in the Avid Qualified Systems document. The Caldigit USB-C dock is supported. While the physical connection is the same, this is USB-C, not Thunderbolt 3.

Bob, thanks for sticking with me! This is the info I was after.  Looks like the Caldigit dock is the way to go for sure.

    Thanks for your help!
