Two Avid Generic Plug-Ins competing to link A7s footage

On a client's Symphonies. They recently updated from 2018.7 to 2018.9. Now it seems there are two Avid Generic Plug-Ins installed - 2.6.0.10041 and 3.3.4.10092. When linking in a card's worth of A7s footage, half of them are using the new Generic Plug-In (and showing timecode) and the other half are using Avid Generic Plug-In 2.6 (00:00:00:00). RT-Click on the clips when linking only shows one Generic plug-in (plus QuickTime and XDCAM plug-ins) but there's no distinction between 3.3 or 2.6.

How can we get rid of the older 2.6 plug? I don't see an uninstaller for it. Prior to the update to 2018.9 they uninstalled Avid Media Composer and Avid Application Manager, but left Avid Codecs PE. Does that package need to be uninstallled as well before an update?

I'm pretty sure that you're using the latest version. The easy way of tersting is to take something that has timecode and link to it. If you get timecode out, you're using the new version. Unfortunately, there's no documentation as to where the Avid Generic Plug-in is stored (I suspect it's in the Editor Transcode directory somewhere).

Re: Two Avid Generic Plug-Ins competing to link A7s footage

Thanks. The odd thing here is that upon importing (linking) to the footage in Premiere CC2017, all clips show timecode. But using 2018.9 results in some clips showing timecode and some not, based on the Avid Generic Plug-In that gets associated to the clip in the source browser.

    Some clips have TC

And I can't see any reason some clips get to use the new Generic Plug-In (3.3.4) and some get the timecode-ignorant 2.6.

Re: Two Avid Generic Plug-Ins competing to link A7s footage

Were the clips linking with 2.6 used in a previous version of Media Composer? I think MC tries to continue using the same plugin that was used originally to link a particular source file. Probably stores this in the AMA cache. Just a guess - could be totally wrong here.

Nope. Card had just come in from the field.

But AMA Cache is a lead I'll take. Perhaps all the previous imports to A7s footage mentioned in the cache have informed the new software. Will try clearing the cache. But if that doesn't do it I'm thinking I'll suggest a full uninstall/reinstall...

I'm getting the exact same issue! did the clearing the Cache work? I'm on Windows 2018.8.

Re: Two Avid Generic Plug-Ins competing to link A7s footage

    No, I'm sorry Joe.

I cleared cache but it didn't help. Uninstalled the full app and reinstalled - to no avail.

I dug into the Program Files/.../AVX2_Plug-Ins/AMA folder, found and deleted the Q7-2.6 folder, leaving the Q7 by itself, but can't launch into MC until the Avid installer is finished putting back the Generic 2.6 for me!

So Avid support got back to me with word that this behavior has been officially logged as a bug, and to watch update release notes to see when it has been fixed. 2018.10 came but it wasn't in the release notes.

As of right now, whenever A7s FTG comes in, it gets transcoded to DNx QTs in Adobe Media Encoder, which are then consolidated onto the Nexis - with timecode.

    Good Luck!

This is still an issue with 18.12

Worse: when I moved external drives from USB to NAS (and mounted them using the same drive letters), some of previously linked MP4 AVC AMA clips relinked using the "old" plug-in and some the "new" one, apparently randomly. The bad consequence is that previously created group clips are now broken (clip duration differ by 1 frame depending on the plug-in used [:'(])

Same here 2018.9 ingested AMA files (mostly A7 but even FS7) making Problems in the 2018.9 as well in 2019.12

we reinstalled the 2012.9 - upgraded to 2018.12.2

but finally there was no Relink of AMA Files possible (also relink to files keeps greyed out)

spending hours of - deleting the index files , deleting the AMA Cache , opening the Source Monitor to upgrad the linked Bin by Bin - no success - 50% of the AMA linked files stayed offline after a simple change of the driveletter - all offline files keeping the GENERIC 2.6 plugin und stopping any relink trials.

Did anyone find a solution to this?  I'm bringing old bins back online that were created in 2018.4, now running 2018.12.2.  Much of my .mp4 media (supplied by 3rd parties) will NOT relink via AMA and like the earlier poster, my bins show a grayed-out "relink to file" option when I right-click on the clip.  If I link a new clip into the bin, then attempt a "relink" to the old clip, it sometimes performs the relink --- but without audio. That's not a workable solution.  Like the poster above, my original clips in Avid are 1 frame longer than a freshly linked clip, but the media HAS NOT CHANGED.  And there appears to be no way to modify the clip to force the AMA relink without breaking something else.

But it gets crazier!  Check out my screenshots below.  The frame count increases by as much as 2 frames depending on which plugin I choose to link with!  Madness.  Evidently, Quicktime, Avid Generic and Avid Generic 2.6 all do something different to the media.  This is a show stopper, potentially lurking within every project I've cut over the past year.  I've got at least a tenth or more of a large project (out of 50+ bins) that just won't relink.  I can't transcode & edit until I relink.  This is a big mess.

Anyone got ideas?  I contacted support this afternoon, but, you know... the "call then wait 36 hours for an email" runaround.

Re: Two Avid Generic Plug-Ins competing to link A7s footage

It's hit or miss, but I have been able to relink many of the clips this way:

Alt-drag the same master clips into the bin fresh from the camera volume. Sort by clip name. Compare the starting TC to the original clips. If 00:00:00:00 is the TC of the clips from 2018.4, change the TC of the newly linked clips to match.

Do you have old sequences cut using those clips? With the sequence in a different bin, select the freshly linked clips in the footage bin, then right-click the sequence and relink - using the option to relink to selected clips in open bins.

If the original clips don't already have a Source (tape) name give them and the fresh clips the same tape name as well. Try relinking the original clips, with tape name as a method.

    Might get you some luck.

Re: Two Avid Generic Plug-Ins competing to link A7s footage

Thanks DaveS. I will try this as soon as I get a chance... but this absolutely sucks.  Shouldn't be this way.  And it can't be blamed on 3rd party plugins because it's Avid's own "generic" plugin! Not what I expect from media composer. Reading timecode correctly is, like, essential for video editing and the last thing I thought I'd ever deal with in MC.

Rant Warning:  Frankly, this is like a "premiere pro-ish" sort of behavior.  I've had a number of new bugs to deal with these past two years in MC and I certainly hope Avid's software team is firming up the new and improved version of MC for a certain degree of stability out of the gate.  I hate being a guinea pig when it's my time and money on the line.  I also hate the support team's slow response times.  Still waiting for a response.

    Ok, Rant over :)
