Subtitles from Belle Nuit to Avid

    Hello everyone,

I created some subtitles in Belle Nuit Subtitler 2.1.1 and I would like to get them into my Avid Media Composer 8.4

From Belle Nuit I exported the TIFFS and the EDL, brought both of them to Avid. But the problem is, the EDL stays offline, I can't link it to the TIFFS in the project.

I know I could load an Avid DS into the Subcab Generator, but it seems like that I loose the styles of the subtitles.

There is a tutorial on the Belle Nuit website that makes no sense to me (https://www.belle-nuit.com/subtitler:avid-media-composer-symphony-and-xpress). Maybe somebody can do a understandable step by step through the process of bringing an EDL from Belle Nuit to Avid? That would be great.

    Thx.

I'd go the Sub caps route. Yes you will have to recreate the style in the subcaps effect but you will get far more flexibility.

Importing Tiffs or AMA linking them and aligning them to an EDL is very up hill and you can then only key the subtitles over the image. If you need to edit or make changes its back to square one.

What Pat says has merit.  But I will provide a small counter point.  If you are not happy with the options for looks provided by Sub Caps, you are stuck.  Here is an example.  We have a client that has very specific needs on the edge treatment.  It could not be accomplished in Sub Caps.  With a keyed png, we were able to use Sapphire to add the edge treatment needed.  You can not use plugins on Sub Caps.

Very specific, I realize.  But these things can matter.

Thanks Pat, that is what I figured. But for me, I only have trouble with the Subcap Generator, it is always misbehaving. You select a font, another font will appear, you choose a position for the subs, some random subs have other positions.. On my system it's a nightmare.

So I guess I will go back to my old workflow of exporting the video from Avid, bringing it to Premiere and doing the whole subtitles and exporting job there.

You need to get your head round the global and local options.

The general rule is to set the global options as required that achieves the most amount of subs as correct in terms of style. Then on specific subs you can turn off the global control in various areas and apply local changes.
