Idea [I] Avid Media Composer Family – FAQ!!!

    Locked Contact

Q:  Are Media Composer | First and Media Composer being renamed?
    A:
Avid Media Composer | First will remain the same, but Avid Media Composer will be split into two new product offerings—avid Media Composer and Avid Media Composer | Ultimate.

Q:  What’s the difference between Media Composer and Media Composer | Ultimate?
    A:
The primary editing features and functions of Media Composer and Media Composer | Ultimate will be the same. The differences are that the new Media Composer offers a lower cost entry to the industry-standard editing tool and is geared for independent editors and moviemakers, while Media Composer | Ultimate is formerly Media Composer with an added software bundle. Media Composer | Ultimate offers expanded workflows for use in collaborative production environments, such as post and broadcast, offering enhanced integration with Avid NEXIS, MediaCentral | Editorial Management, and MediaCentral | Production Management, plus access to shared bins,
projects, and more. In addition, Media Composer | Ultimate will come bundled with additional software: the ScriptSync, PhraseFind, Symphony and NewsCutter options. All of these options will also be available to Media Composer customers as purchasable subscriptions.

While Media Composer and Media Composer | Ultimate will both offer access to the latest tools throughout your subscription, Media Composer will come with Standard support (web only) and Media Composer | Ultimate will come with ExpertPlus support (web and phone). In addition, Media Composer | Ultimate will offer Floating Licensing (not available with Media Composer).

Q:  Which version of Media Composer is right for me?
    A:
Avid will now offer three versions of Media Composer, making it easy to choose a product that best suits your needs and budget. For aspiring professionals and those new to video editing, Media Composer | First is a free version of Media Composer that enables you to edit with the same tools the pros use to create your favorite movies and TV shows. Media Composer is designed for independent professionals and boutique post houses and facilities that require high-speed creative editorial, but don’t need collaborative workflows. Media Composer | Ultimate is for post, broadcast, and enterprise-level media facilities that need advanced post-production tools, real-time collaborative workflows, and tight integration into MediaCentral environments to connect dispersed media, tools, and people together.

Q:  How do I purchase Media Composer or Media Composer | Ultimate?
    A:
The new Media Composer and Media Composer | Ultimate will be available as subscriptions only.  You can subscribe monthly, annually, or get even bigger discounts with multi-year subscriptions. Annual subscribers can pay in full at the start of the year at a discounted rate, and will not need to connect their Media Composer client to the Internet every 30 days, as monthly subscribers do.

Q:  How much will Media Composer and Media Composer | Ultimate cost?
    A:
Many of the purchasing options that were previously available will still be available with the new Media Composer family models. There are options to commit to a month, a year, or multiple years, and discounts on purchase pricing for committing to a longer term. When purchasing a subscription from Avid’s webstore, you’ll have the option to commit monthly or to a full year. Committing to a year gets you a discount on your monthly bill, just like today. In addition, we are introducing a new purchasing option: subscribe to a year and pay for the year up front (rather than being billed monthly) and you’ll get a full 2 months off of the normal subscription price. Customers who purchase from one of our Avid Trusted Partners will only have the ability to purchase an annual subscription and pay for the full subscription up front (monthly billing is only available through the Avid webstore.) However, this means that all annual subscription purchases through an Avid Trusted Partner also automatically include 2 months free.

Here are all of the purchasing and pricing options available for Media Composer:

    * Discounted price is good for the first year of subscription only; subsequent years are at normal annual prices.

Q:  I currently subscribe to Media Composer—what happens to my license?
    A:
If you’re a current Media Composer subscriber, you have a choice: you can continue to use your existing subscription until it is up for renewal, at which point you can either renew as a Media Composer | Ultimate subscriber and have access to all the same collaborative workflows, plus the added software options, or start a new Media Composer subscription if you generally work independently. Or if you prefer, you can renew your current subscription early and immediately transition to a Media Composer | Ultimate subscription. If you who wish to downgrade to a Media Composer subscription, you will not have the option to do so through an early renewal and will need to wait until your regular renewal period to make the change.

Q:  I own Media Composer—what happens to my license?
    A:
If you own a Media Composer perpetual license, you will not see a change to your product or pricing (though you will technically own the same feature set as the new Media Composer | Ultimate, the product name for the Media Composer perpetual license is not changing). You can continue to renew your 1-Year Software Updates + Support Plan (formerly known as an Annual Upgrade and Support Plan) for the foreseeable future. Alternatively, if you want to crossgrade to the Ultimate version, you can, however your license will become a subscription and cannot transition back to a perpetual license.

Q:  What will happen to Media Composer options and add-ons?
    A:
Software options for Media Composer—including PhraseFind, ScriptSync, and Symphony—will be available as subscriptions only. Whether you own a Media Composer perpetual license or subscribe to the new Media Composer software, you will be able to purchase subscriptions for any of these options to use with Media Composer. For Media Composer | Ultimate subscribers, these options will be included with your subscription.  The Media Composer | NewsCutter Option is also included with a Media Composer | Ultimate subscription, or you can purchase a node-locked license for your Media Composer perpetual license.

Q:  Will you continue to offer the dongle with Media Composer perpetual licenses?
    A:
Yes, we will continue to offer the dongle with Media Composer perpetual licenses (with the added fee), and there are currently no plans to discontinue it.

Q:  Can I still buy a Media Composer perpetual license or will I need to transition to a subscription?
    A:
Yes, we will continue to offer Media Composer perpetual licenses, as well as 1-Year Software Updates + Support Plan renewals (previously known as Annual Upgrade and Support Plan renewals). This software provides all of the same collaborative workflows of Media Composer | Ultimate, but does not include the software add-ons. If you’d rather convert your Media Composer perpetual license to a Media Composer | Ultimate subscription license, we offer options to do this too.

Q:  My dongle and floating license are described as “for fee”—is the product line changing?
    A:
No, there are no changes to the current offerings. Both dongles and perpetual floating licenses cost more than standard software licenses today, and that will not change going forward.

Q:  What about floating licenses for Media Composer | Ultimate—do those have an additional fee?
    A:
Part of what makes Media Composer | Ultimate the best product for collaborators and teams is the ability to use it in a floating license setup. The additional cost normally applied to perpetual floating licenses is included in the price of the subscription. Note, however, that floating license subscriptions cannot be billed monthly at this time.

Q:  Will there be a separate installer for each version of Media Composer?
    A:
At launch, there will be a separate installer for Media Composer | First; however, Media Composer and Media Composer | Ultimate will share the same installer. The model that runs will be determined by the activated subscription license. Our intention is to have a single installer for all three products; that will happen at a later date.

Q:  Are there different icons for the different Media Composer models?
    A:
Yes, there is a unique icon for Media Composer | First, Media Composer, and Media Composer | Ultimate; Media Composer Perpetual licenses will use the Media Composer icon. However, you may notice that after installation and activation of Media Composer | Ultimate, your icon continues to look like the Media Composer icon. This is a technical limitation that will be corrected in a future software release.

Q:  What’s happening to my bundled third-party products, such as NewBlue Titler Pro, Sorenson Squeeze Lite, and Boris Continuum Complete Lite?
    A:
The new Media Composer and Media Composer | Ultimate models do not come with any bundled third-party products.

    ● If you purchased an annual subscription prior to April 7, 2018, you will continue to have access to NewBlue Titler Pro, Sorenson Squeeze Lite, and Boris Continuum Complete Lite until you either renew or crossgrade (convert) your subscription to Media Composer | Ultimate.
    ● If you purchased a month-to-month Media Composer subscription prior to April 7, 2018, you will continue to have access to NewBlue Titler Pro, Sorenson Squeeze Lite, and Boris Continuum Complete Lite until you either renew or crossgrade (convert) your subscription to Media Composer | Ultimate
    ● Once you crossgrade (convert) or renew to a Media Composer | Ultimate subscription, you will NO longer have access to the previously bundled third-party products.
    ● If you purchase a new Media Composer | Ultimate subscription between April 7, 2018 and June 30, 2018, you will receive “trial” versions of NewBlue Titler Pro, Sorenson Squeeze Lite, and Boris Continuum Complete Lite; these “trials” will run out between July 1, 2018 and July 31, 2018, depending on when your subscription started.  For example; if you purchased a subscription on April 15, 2018, you will be able to use the bundled products until July 15, 2018; if you purchased a subscription on June 5, 2018, you will be able to use the bundled products until July 5, 2018, and so on.
