Loss of bit depth when export option XDCAM MXF OP1a

All my XAVC HD files have 4:2:2 chroma subsampling and 10 bits depth. When I export them as XDCAM MXF OP1a files, there bit depth is 8 bits only.

I have Panasonic AVC Long-GOP G12 (4:2:0 High Profile). May this be the cause?

XDcam is mostly 4:2:2 8bit. if you want 10bit output use xavc, avcintra100 or DNXhd 185X; or maybe in newer MC versions long gop export provides a 10bit file output.

I work on 10bit on my GH5 and I transcode only to 185X for that reason.

If your footage is 10bit you will use 185X for FHD.

Heavy but this is the only option so far.

I wish we could have 120X or 85X.

AVC Intra supports 10 bit and its native to MC (as in AS-11 export which is 10bit) But not sure about it as internal media.

    Pat is right.

    Let me check this out.

I am not sure if it's up to DNxHD standards but it's a right thought.

None of the info tools gives the bit of Intra export.

As Pat says it's native (duh) but I cant see informations if the file is 10 bit.

However I can see this by comparing the banding on the Green Screens when output is set to green/green and 10bit.

    Exploring more.

All AVC Intra are 10 bit with Long Gops 50 and 25 being 10 bit and G12 or G6 at 8 bit.

In your case you can transcode and edit with XDCAM HD 50Mbits (or XAVC Intra if you want to export SAS).

Then export as AMA export using XAVC-L 50 (as Avid Media Processor) the output will be 4:2:2 10 bit.

XDCAM OP1a have DNxHD resolutions only at 2018.3.

P.S. All AVC Log Gop 4:2:2 AMA File exports through Avid Media Processor are 10 bit as well.

AMA Fie exporting as Avid Media Processor, using XAVCl-L HD 50 works well as long as timeline is not too long.

However, when I tried to export a 42 minutes XAVC timeline, blue screen indicating a hardware failure showed up (2 attempts).

Comparing succesful (shorter timeline) (a) XAVCl-L HD 50 exports with (b) MXF OP1a (HD 50 Mbits) shows:

File size and overall bit rate of (a) are 13% smaller than with (b), but has 10 bit color depth instead 8 bit with (b).

Which process should I apply for best overall results: (a) with or (b) ?

    Roland,

a 46:48 timeline AMA File Export as Avid Media Processor and XAVC-L HD 4:2:2 10bit works fine here.

It took me 35-36 minutes to export.

AMA File Export >DNxHD 185X takes 16-17 minutes for the same timeline.

    AMA File Export >XAVC Intra 100 23-24.

If you want the 10bit you have no other choice between the two of them anyway.

10bit has a GREAT advantage as far as any kind of color banding is concerned.

As long as it is maintained 10bit from shootings to transcode/AMA and export.

    George,

transcoding long timelines with XDCAM HD 50 Mbits does not work in my case, however Expport As XAVC using XAVC Long GOP 4:2:2 10 but 50 Mbps works perfectly.

Color depth bitrate remains 10 bits, and File Size and Overall Bitrate are almost identical with Export As XDCAM MXF OP1a HD 50 Mbits
