MC 8.9.1 XAVC-S support. Good, but lacking common metadata.

While the ability to link XAVC-S is good, there are still some issues in the area of metadata support. Particularly timecode. All clips linked using the Avid Generic plug-in are coming in with a start time of 00:00:00:00, and the durations are all 1 frame off (low). This makes it impossible to relink existing wrapped clips (which use the Quicktime library) for the XAVC-S clips. I haven't had a chance to check for other MP4 based clips, but I suspect it will be the same.

    Thanks Raff,

I requested the case be closed. It turns out that Convert V4/Dali's Mustache is artifically setting the timecode based on the clip creation date. The camera I used (Sony AX100) doesn't record timecode. It records the clip start time as metadata (along with the iris setting, white balance, etc.) but not as SMPTE timecode.

Re: MC 8.9.1 XAVC-S support. Good, but lacking common metadata.

Unfortunately, this doesn't help. Dali only creates QuickTime based timecode tracks, and the MC source browser sees that it's QT (even when using the Clip Welder just to make a copy of the media with a TC track) and marks it as being decded by the QT plug-in.

What I need is a rewrite without conversion that adds a native TC track (or SMPTE audio time track).

This problem may also exist for the Sony A7S/A7S ii. There are reports that even when setting the userbit for free run timecode, the timecode is not available. Can anyone test this?

Has anyone been able to transcode XAVC S files in excess of 20 minutes to DNxHR or DNxHD.  I posted the problem here; http://community.avid.com/forums/t/181552.aspx

I just tested this, and the same happened to me for a 30 minute XAVC-S.

I'm able to transcode 4 minute files, I haven't determined what the limit is yet.  My 20+ minute files will not transcode.

    This problem which occured on larger AVCHD files is referenced here;

Re: MC 8.9.1 XAVC-S support. Good, but lacking common metadata.

It also looks like it's failing to import the entire XAVC-S. The duration is off by 1 frame, and it's the first frame of the clip that's not being included. In other words, the linked media starts at the second frame.

    To replicate:

link to a clip and note the duration of the clip. Then open the clip in another application (e.g. Resolve, Lightworks, etc.) and note the duration.

I've checked this with Resolve, MediaInfo and GSpot. All of which confirm there are 615 frames. But when I switch the duration display on the source monitor to frames, it shows 614. And I've verified that it's the first frame that's missing.

The transcode error has been reproduced by Avid. The case number is 03275380.

Thanks Dave, also I have asked a friend that owns an A7s to send me a clip with the time code turnned on.  The archived clips from an A7s shoot that I have all (each clip) have the time code starting at 00.  Have you looked at the meta data file from the A7s clips yet?

Re: MC 8.9.1 XAVC-S support. Good, but lacking common metadata.

I don't have access to the A7S, but while doing some research I noted that there was issue with the timecode. The question is whether or not the timecode is stored as a timecode track or a metadata track (and they are 2 different things). It's also possible that the timecode is there but that there's no timecode metadata indicating which track to use. And there's been some question as to whether or not the timecode is being written regardless of the setting of the userbit.
