    Re: Can't get into Media-First.

    Hello Toby

I was referring to :- again

Finally after nearly three weeks of late nights I finally have overcome the Initialization,Path/Folder issues  now stalled on :-Main  Page but stalled won't run only frozen on the page with the Windows error audio..

This is an Windows i7 Toshiba Laptop with 16Gb memory and as I have said too may times it will run anything including our Media Composer 8.9 ...

I'm on Windows 10 latest and Media Composer First won't run past the Start Screen ..

The issues we have experienced and posted on this forum including Initialization and Path/Folder issues etc  ..

frustratrion is taking it's toll if I am not understood by now -

    Regards

(PS)  these issues are referred to in the recognised Video Reviews . there are Professionals can't get this program to run no doubt it would not be appropriate to quote them other than to again ...I'm on Windows 10 latest and Media Composer First won't run past the Start Screen ..

    Cheers

    Re: Can't get into Media-First.

    Hi everyone,

I can add myself to the list of unhappy campers who cannot get MCF to even start!!!

I have a brand new Dell Precision T5810 workstation, 8 core Xeon E5-1680v4 3.4GHz, 64 GB RAM, Quadro M2000, Windows 10, Everything fully updated, latest drivers etc... whole creative cloud suite works without issue as does Cubase 9.

On starting MCF via the app manager I get to "Initializing Avid Media Access Volume Manager" and the Exceptiocode: 3221225477, which I have seen flying around the forum.

    I have tried:

    1. Complete removal, installing MC trial unpacking to the root C:, clearing the cache, uninstalling and then installing MCF again with everything on the C: drive... same issue.

    2. Removing all USB devices aside from the mouse and keyboard - gets to the same place but just comes up with a windows message that MCF has encountered a problem and must close... so different... but still a FAIL

    3. Uninstalled everything AVID - installed MC trial - first start up same error message as 1. but I happened to notice in the system tray an icon for Avid Background Services, which was off - on turning it on suddenly MC started without issue... so I uninstalled everything again, re installed MCF thinking I would see the same icon in the system tray... but its not there!! I can't find any reference to background services, or how to manually start them, and there doesn't appear to be a application with that name in the AVID folders

Has anyone that had issues actually find a way passed them yet? I am interested in learning this software as it is so widely used... but never come across such a fussy application!!

By default, Windows 10 will automatically update device drivers when they are made available. This means that Avid-critical drivers may be replaced with newer versions without the user’s knowledge".

Therefore, one of the things that Avid recommends for optimizing Windows 10 is to disable automatic driver updates.

    Re: Can't get into Media-First.

    Hello Andrew

Don't know if this helps anyone, after three weeks of trial and error we have been trying to install Media Composer First on several Toshiba Laptops .

    Toshiba Satellite P-70B -- Toshiba Satelite 660

Conclusion is both these machines are below AVID Specification much higher end Graphic Spec is required ...

We run MC 8.9 on our regular desktop Editor

Media Composer First from our user  experience requires the same Professional System Specification .

which begs the question just who is Media Composer First aimed at considerinf the usual beginner lacks the financial and technical ability to deal with Professional Hardswarew and Software...etc etc

    Hi Fred,

Due to MC and MC | First not co installing on the same computer I have not tried it with any Windows machine, so at present I cannot comment on the Windows side.  From my experience with First on a Mac here I should probably disagree with your conclusion.  First is installed here and running without any obvious issues on a 9 year old Mac Pro with the original 9 year old graphic card and 6 year old OS.

Given the issues some folk have had with the initial releases  the products performance / results  do not necessarily give a any indication of the products aim.

You said earlier in the thread that the full version of Media Composer runs on your i7 laptop (the P-70B), so I doubt the problems you're having with Media Composer First are a result of the same laptop not meeting the specifications.

    Keith R:

Pretty much true. The only difference I can see is the amount of RAM required.

    Hello Andrew

    (1) if it is ok to continue this conversation without causing ripples, we are talking Windows Home and Consumer/Gamer

level Graphics and Avid clearly states Media Composer requires a certain Professional level to function properly,

    (2) I'm saying our experience is Media Composer First will not run on an good mid level i7 Laptop the Graphics Card is  Radion AMD R9 Series. the play back is stuttery if at all ,

Cross purposes maybe - we are on Windows and cannot comment on Mac . Again in our experience we have had no success with an install of Media Composer First on  Toshiba Mid Range Laptops ....

    Re: Can't get into Media-First.

    Keith,

Does your laptop have both Intel HD graphics and the Radeon card? If so, have you tried disabling the Intel graphics chip in the BIOS (if you can)? If both the onboard chip set and the Radeon are enabled, then Windows always sees the onboard chip as the primary display driver, and that's what MC (including MC First) will use, NOT the Radeon.

    Hello ...

Yes fully agree no doubt this is one of the issues ...

Raises yet another line of considerations

From past experience Toshiba and Dell Laptop BIOS has to be managed carefully I found that out the hard way once but that is another story ... If it ain't broke don't fix it ..  unless you are an expert Toshiba particularly doesn't  invite you to mess with their BIOS .. (Last time I did it ended up in the bin ) .. likewise reluctant to open it and upgrade the Graphics .(If you get it wrong chances are it's nor reversable Laptop BIOS management isn't the same as Desktop least that's what I discovered  long ago.    fix it at your own risk/bin it/buy a new one ..!!

The original idea was to install Media Composer First on several Toshiba  Laptops - as an intro Club Level/Enthusiast by trial and error we have found these Laptops in their original configeration are under-spec for Media Composer First.

Maybe one day if I can get over a few hang-ups about messing with Toshiba/Dell mid range Laptops I may re-consider ..

meanwhile thank you / yes maybe we're down to BIOS an Graphic Card issues (maybe)

    Re: Can't get into Media-First.

Checking the BIOS for the capability is safe. All you need to do is to look and see if the HD graphics can be disabled (or marked as secondary).

The other thing you can do is to disable the HD adapter in the Windows device manager and restart Windows. Just do a savepoint first, just in case. With the adapter disabled, the Radeon becomes the primary display driver. If anything bad happens, use Windows recovery and restore the savepoint.

    Hello again

    Thank you will do:-

Another - possibility may be is there someone familiar enough with the subject Toshida/s to comment on possible Media Composer First application..

    IE:- Windows 10 Home

    Satellite P70B

    Satellite A 660

The P70B is preferred because of the good 17.3" inch HD screen ...

I know we may be pushing the barrow up hill - it's only because we can see the potential for Media Composer First

    If the Toshiba/s with 1Gb Graphics won't do it we're done .

There have been a record number of reads on this whole subject of getting Media Composer First up and running..

Will see what can be done with the DIOS as suggested

The question of Graphic capacity or lack of it will still need to be addressed. all - together there are about six older computers around here ranging from early XP -Windows 7. to current and nothing will run Media Composer First  satisfactorily but I stress that is only our humble opinion ..

Thanks again we will tackle the BIOS and come back ..

Pretty much true. The only difference I can see is the amount of RAM required.

One of our good friends i don't recall who has Media Composer First running on an 8 year old Laptop

We have no success with reasonably current mid range HD Laptops with 1Gb available (about 950 Gb actual)

When you get this old and nothing much to do at midnight decided to test the proposition that Media Composer First will run on older machines.. Geeked

Avid states that Media Composer First requires Windows 10 Pro 64 bit

6Gb Ram Preferably up to 32Gb

    Nvidia K 5200 through Nvidia  M4000

Having about six old machines around here we decided to test the idea it will run on pld machines:-

we dug deep under the bench and set up a box ASUS G41M  DDR 3 16 Gb Ram -that was a good oldie in it's day..

Just for fun;- (12 old cards up to 1Gb)

Pinnacle Original Rev 7, ATi old Pal 128 Gb , Nvidia Ge Force 8800Gts, Another Pinnacle 250 Mb,Gogabyte GV ,Series, Old Pinnacle 128Mb, Gigabyte GV N 951, ATI Radion x 195 Pro, Pinnacle xxx 250Gb, Toshiba AMD 1 Gb ..

Don't know if it is any help in  our experience and burning the candle all night Media Composer First will not accept old or older cards up to 2Gb we unfortunately have nothing above 1Gb for the test other than our Main Media Composer 8.9  if i recall correctly an 4Gb card whis ok for most of our purposes...

Our oldest Computer is an Osborne One CPM Wordstar, Supercal, Dbase2 and MBasic I was writing at midnighr and pushing the barrow up hil then too..

Almost dqylight -bye for now unfortunately only demonstrating again our Toshiba  Laptops are under spec for Media Composer First and not in a position to upgrade at least for now..

    Happy editing

Again, doesn't one of your Toshiba laptops run the full version of Media Composer? (I think I recall seeing that in this thread, or one of your other ones.) That one should also be able to run Media Composer First.

Also, what is the current problem? I know you had trouble with licenses and activation, but I think those have been solved, so I'm wondering in what way does Media Composer First not work now?
