    Subtitles

How can I add subtitles to my movie?  Like when a character is speaking a different language.

    Re: Subtitles

You can use the title tool allbeit a little work :) You might wanna look into Inscriber or Deko for subtitling purpose. It's expensive though

if you got Marquee use it. It can batch-generate the titles from imported text.

    Re: AW: Re: Subtitles

I've done this before - in both Italian and Chinese Confused [*-)]. I used the title tool to accept pasted subtitles from a Word document supplied with timecode references for each section of v/o.  Worked fine actually - in both languages...  Down and dirty, as they say, but it did the job!

    Re: AW: Re: Subtitles

I wrote myself a utility that automatically creates/inserts timecoded subtitles into an Avid sequence.  Put it together a few years back when I was subtitling a couple of movies that had ~400 titles each.

For the first movie, the time saving wasn't all that profound - it took me the same amount of time to write my program as it would've taken to enter all of the titles by hand.

Of course, for the second program, it was much more effortless.  I went and ate lunch while the program generated the titles for me automatically :)

(I'm not releasing the program, as it's messy and can be very finicky, but I'm willing to "rent it out" to create subtitle sequences for people).

    Re: Subtitles

First, You need a software which can make subtiles in an easy and efficiency way. I will sugest Subtitle Workshop from UruSoft. Read the documentation to get it work.

The idea for using this tool is to separate the subtitles from the video, which makes the workflow much efficiency.

Second, If You plan to deliver the subtitles to DVD, export them from Subtitle Workshop and import them in Your dvd-authoring program. If You will broadcast, ask the broadcaster which format they want the subtitle in. If You deliver on web, use the subtitle/text features in quicktime, mediaplayer or real and export from Subtitle Workshop in an appropriate way. If You will deliver on VHS, you have to import bitmaps or title. There is one free tool which I has not tested which rendering subtitel files to bitmat, MaestroSBT.

If You are good at programing and understand Avid Meta tool You may make a script which import and place the bitmaped subtitels.

I hope this will help You.

And one warning, do not try to use titletools or other graphic software for more than a few subtitels because You can not manage them all and everything will a) end up entire wrong or b) Take to much time.

    Re: Subtitles

You may be able to edit the subtitel file and import it in Marquee, but when You have to set them on the right time which is a huge work.

I use stream subtext for rendering my text, but I have never import them to Avid. My program is replaced with Lemony which also can export EDLs to Premiere and Final Cut Pro. Maybe, You can render them and export the EDL for import in Avid.

One other solution is to create a script or program which translate a subtext file to Avid meta track. But this is way above my knowledge of Avid.

I would download the trail version of Lemony and test if its EDL:s will work. I have no experience to use the program for makeing subtexts, but the stream subtext was not nice to work with. Subtitle workshop is much better.

I hope this can help You.

    Idea [I] Re: Subtitles

You might want to check out the subtitling tool Belle Nuit (http://www.belle-nuit.com/subtitler/). It makes it possible to import subtitle scripts directly into Avid.
