    Segmentation Fault" in thread "Main Thread", at address 0x0

    Still getting this problem since upgrading to 8.5

    Has until then NEVER had one single crash. Now it´s every 3 or 4 clips down on the timeline and crash..

    Have read a lot of the suggestions in the forum and tried it all out = no result yet..Still crashing.

    And since I haven´t changed anything besides upgrading MC there might be a "thing" with 8.5...

    When im working on a identical macpro with the same areca disc but MC 8.4, there is no problem..

    My system is: Macpro with 10.10.5 and all projects on external Areca Raid disc.

    @blueuw:

    1. Is it 8.5 or 8.5.1? If you're on 8.5, either:

      a. Update to 8.5.1.

      b. Downgrade to 8.4.4. (Seems to be the most stable with 10.10.5.)

    2. Can you post a portion of the crash log? Step-by-step instructions here:

    Re: Segmentation Fault" in thread "Main Thread", at address 0x0

    @blueuw: OK, you have a couple interesting things going here.

    1. The good news: this crash is exactly the same! Here are the interesting bits:

    blueuw:

    Crashed Thread:        0  Main Thread  Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread

    Exception Type:        EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)

    Exception Codes:       EXC_I386_GPFLT

    Thread 0 Crashed:: Main Thread  Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread

    0   libc++abi.dylib               0x00007fff9ab62a8d __dynamic_cast + 30

    1   com.digidesign.AMPIPluginDSM   0x00000001202f63c4 CAudioEffectControlRep::ClearBPs(long long, long long, ACFError::IError*) + 84

    2   com.digidesign.AMPIPluginDSM   0x00000001202f8b7d CAudioEffectControl::ClearBPs(long long, long long, ACFError::IError*) + 29

    3   libAMPIHost.dylib             0x0000000108b355c9 AMPIControlDataRep::ClearBPs(long long, long long) + 55

    4   libAMPIHost.dylib             0x0000000108b27c88 std::__1::__function::__func<AMPIChannelData::ForThisMixerControl(std::__1::vector<int, std::__1::allocator<int> > const&, std::__1::vector<std::__1::function<bool (AMPIControlData const&)>, std::__1::allocator<std::__1::function<bool (AMPIControlData const&)> > > const&, std::__1::function<void (AMPIControlData&)>)::$_5, std::__1::allocator<AMPIChannelData::ForThisMixerControl(std::__1::vector<int, std::__1::allocator<int> > const&, std::__1::vector<std::__1::function<bool (AMPIControlData const&)>, std::__1::allocator<std::__1::function<bool (AMPIControlData const&)> > > const&, std::__1::function<void (AMPIControlData&)>)::$_5>, bool (AMPIControlData&)>::operator()(AMPIControlData&) + 142

    5   libAMPIHost.dylib             0x0000000108b25bcc AMPIChannelData::ForAllMixerControls(std::__1::vector<int, std::__1::allocator<int> > const&, std::__1::function<bool (AMPIControlData&)>) + 200

    These say memory leak to me. If a Keith Gerrard or RalphC is reading, you might pass this on to your devs.

    That exception type (highlighted in bold) has a human-readable explanation here:

    https://www.raywenderlich.com/10209/my-app-crashed-now-what-part-1

    In short, sounds like you found a 8.5.x bug. Question is: what actions lead up to it?

    2. I did say a couple interesting things. The other thing I noticed is your hardware:

    blueuw:

    Model: MacPro6,1, BootROM MP61.0116.B16, 6 processors, 6-Core Intel Xeon E5, 3.5 GHz, 32 GB, SMC 2.20f18

    Graphics: AMD FirePro D500, AMD FirePro D500, PCIe, 3072 MB

    Graphics: AMD FirePro D500, AMD FirePro D500, PCIe, 3072 MB

    Did you know your hardware might be bad? Apple has a recall on 2013 Mac Pro's of your model in a certain date range. Give 'em a call and see if it qualifies. May not be related to your problem, but it's one more thing to eliminate.

    I was about to write my boilerplate "Try this" list, but remembered you're not seeing this in 8.4.x. If you can report what leads up to the crash, that will help Avid get to the bottom of it.

    @JKL32: actually, this is from System Diagnostics Reports. Can you re-send one from User Diagnostic Reports? Should end in ".crash".

    Ah! You have a different problem.

    Since it's a hang, try this:

    1. Quit Media Composer.

    2. In Finder, find the AvidMediaComposer app (/Macintosh HD/Applications/Avid Media Composer.

    3. Click on it and do a Get Info ([Command] + i).

    4. Check "Prevent App Nap".

    5. Relaunch Media Composer and try again.

    5. Relaunch Media Composer and try again.

    I don't see "Prevent App Nap"... but as for as I can remember, I think I enabled that function systemwide a long time ago.... Maybe thats the reason why I am not seeing it?

    (This is getting interesting.)

    According to this Apple Discussion thread, it was removed from Yosemite:

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6768295?start=0&tstart=0

    But then I started looking at my apps (Note: I'm on a Mac Pro 2010, OS X 10.10.5, MC 8.4.4). Many older ones have a "Prevent App Nap" checkbox, including MC 8.4.4. Newer ones, like Frame.io, don't.

    That led me to this:

    https://forums.presonus.com/viewtopic.php?p=50104&sid=3cecb13af24a7bfb882beff0f0ee564d#p50104

    So developers can expressly forbid App Nap. If the checkbox isn't there, that's why. (Makes sense with MC 8.5.) App Nap isn't your problem.

    (For blueuw's sake, we should continue in another thread. Feel free to start another.)

    Thanks for your help - appreciate it. But I have no "prevent app nap" in "info".

    I will start working again and will post the first crash log as soon as it appears..

    @blueuw: ignore the App Nap stuff. Different person, different problem.

    Read my reply post above:

    I think you found a memory leak.

    Post another crash log when it happens. Report the actions that led up to it.
