    Avid 8.5 daily crashes

Editing four days in a row now with Avid MC 8.5. But every day I have like 4 crashes doing normal edit stuff in a 1 hour long sequence. Mostly when I just captured a voice over, when I start te edit the voice-over, the beachball shows up, and Avid hangs. After a force quit, I loose the voice-over. Once it was a 7 minute voice-over! Very annoying.

It's true that this sequence was already edited in a previous version of Avid. But then again.

Hard to track this problem down, because where do I start? It just crashes when doing nothing special, sometimes I am just fast cutting...

FWIW, I'm getting the same thing since upgrading... the dreaded beach-ball hang. No real pattern to when it crashes, but usually when fast-cutting/trimming with multicam.

I blame myself for not waiting for 8.5.1 or something. I was just too excited for certain features. (Frameflex Rotation!!!)

I've changed my "Force Auto Save" to 10 minutes to minimize the damage.

I'm not here looking for answers, I know its part of any uprgrade.... just wanted you to know you aren't alone.

    thnx for sharing!

And we can wait for 8.5.1.. But Avid has to know what to fix, otherwise this problem stays... I think..

I can't help your crashing but I can tell you that you did not lose the voice over.   Even if the clip disappears from the bin because it wasn't saved yet, the media is still on your drive.  Open the Media Tool and sort by creation date.  The most recent master clip on the drive will be your vo and you can just drag it to a bin,

Make sure you are using the latest driver for your AJA or BMD open I/O device.  I don't think AJA has released a version qualified for 8.5 yet.

Similar situation here, frequent crashes, also strange segment mode behaviour. Needs to be fixed soon, because a lot of work is lost...

I am now saving with reat regularity or regretting it.

I'm working a high end Music Vid at ProRes HQ with stock shots, vfx shots, and off speed dailies.  Either the software, the OS X or a combo don't like it, because the spinning wheel hang up is often and irritating.

While I don't fully regret the upgrade, it has been a test of will at times.  Bring on 8.5.1, PLEASE.

When you see the spinning beach ball, try force quitting the two non-responsive QuickTime_OPServer processes in Actvity Monitor, and see if that restores control of MC.

Thanks for this amazing tip, Kevin. Already saved me a bunch of times. Many times, I can continue working without having to reboot! It's made my experience with MC a lot more fun, not having to deal with all the force quits

Well, this is a new thing. I'm not sure what the QuickTime_OPServer process does, but I do know that it is constantly non-reponsive and discovered by accident that it helps *some* of the times MC hangs.  This will only work for 8.5, I believe, since the process is also new.  (Maybe 8.4?  Don't remember...)

Doing a lot of After Effects today, switching between AE and Avid, Avid chrashes all the time, have to do edits over and over again. can't believe this!

How is your memory divided between the two apps?

With MC's new video cache, you might be running into some conflicts.  Try turning MC to the low setting and keeping AE moderate so as to not use more than 50% of the RAM.

I'm assuming you're not using an external output system such as a Matrox, etc.?  On my system, you can't switch between those two apps while monitoring externally, as they both share the same driver, and it will crash switching between apps.
