Blending modes...why is this function missing?

    Dear Avid,

I am searching for "blending modes" in order to blend a clip on V2 into a clip on V1. For example: Add or screen or softlight. Just real easy, basic stuff. Every other NLE software has this function, why don't you?

Do I really have to buy the whole BCC or Sapphire pack for 1-2 grand just to do something a 50$ videoeditor can do?

I really don't understand WHY? Please explain this to me.

It is as if you took out DISSOLVE tomorrow, and we had to buy it as one of 500 plugins for 3000$ from sapphire.
    I don't get it.

    Respectfully

Unfortunately, at this time, yes.  There was a period where BCC ands Avid FX (Red) was included in the software, so I'm sure it wasn't as high as a priority to implement in the software.  But as you noticed, now it is an issue for those who don't have those plugins.

It's been requested.  I'd suggest you throw a message in the Feature Request forum to have your voice heard.  I assume they will implement it eventually, just not sure when.

There also used to be a free blending modes plugin. DFT FilmTools I think it was. But unfortunately that stopped being available after 32bit support was ended.

Given that the blending modes are incredibly simple* and well-documented math it should be very easy to implement, either within Avid or as a third-party AVX plugin.

    as a third-party AVX plugin
The Fusion Connection AVX (paid working version of which had been available to DS and MC users for years) in conjunction with Fusion could have solved for Avid's Blending inadequacies, It's Title Tool issues. Improved their Keying abilities and Tracking options. Given us superb Pan and Zoom abilities from our timelines all with an automated background rendering that updates our timelines. All this functionality would have come with the ability for creating versions.

However for whatever "reasons" the best deal Avid negotiators could come up with for MC users  was one where they had to create a support licence that limited these benefits to people who buy an expensive BM /Avid hardware Dongle.

Strangely at around the same time as a BM Avid deal for the AVX was suggested to Avid Lightworks managed to negotiate  a deal where their equivalent plug in became free for Lightworks Pro owners.

The Avid connect plugin is included free with Fusion 8 Studio. Fusion Free doesn't have the plugin but will if you have an Avid DNxIO connected. The plugin is currently Windows only.

They just need to make a composite effect already.

If Boris and saphire can make a composite effect - why cant Avid?

True and BM's website had it included with Fusion Free when they first announced their purchase of Fusion. This was to have been expected as the plugin was written when there was only Fusion and the plug in worked with MC. BM left their website showing it worked with free for months but rapidly removed it from with what is included with Free documentation after they where questioned about it. (I know this for a fact as I asked the question)

BM try and say the reason it does not work with Free is that Free does not include Scripting. I do not believe this. Why? Everything about the plugin works with Fusion Free and MC except the Fusion automatic program launch and auto load function (both of which we can do manually) Rony Soussan has described the standalone code to make this work in the Fusion Forums (the code is a key part of Generation). So accessing this sub routine(?) is possible with MC and Fusion Studio (which IMO contains nothing except this access that is of interest to the huge majority of MC owners) and Fusion Free, with a single MC but only when it has a $4k Hardware Dongle connected.

To me the obvious WIN WIN situation that should have been negotiated originally would have been to make the AVX plug-in only available via Avid's Application Manager at a suitably increased support or subscription fee (the increase to be paid to BM).

At a stroke Avid solves their blending, titling, keying, pan and zooming deficiencies at no cost. BM gets annual income for the existing plugin and introduce (potentially) large numbers to their Fusion product.

FWIW I emailed a more detailed version of the suggestion above (including that initially it would only be PC but a link to Peter Chamberlain's commitment to make Fusion Mac capable as soon as possible) to Avid for the Product Manager in November 2014. This may explain why I am currently so disillusioned by the restrictive, rubbish agreements we have been saddled with for the Connection AVX
