best MC version to install on a Mac Pro early 2009

I've recently added an SSD and a new video card to my old tower so I figured it's a good time to install a later version of Media Composer on the new SSD boot drive... so I'm now trying to untangle which OS and version of Media Composer I should install... I had planned to install Yosemite and MC 8.4 but noticed this Mac Pro has been dropped from the qualified system list. It appears that 8.0 is the last version where it appears on the qualified list.  So any opinions on installing 8.0 and if so, which OS?  Thanks much.  running with an AJA IO Express.

I'm running 8.4.4 and OS 10.9.5 on a Mac Pro from 2008 and all seems fine to me during everyday use, for whatever that's worth.  Mavericks 10.9.5 is probably a good start, and you might as well try 8.4.4, then you can roll back the MC version easily enough if you want.  Or, you can experiment a little, make a Yosemite partition and install MC there, and try it for a while and ss how it goes.

Qualified systems mean configurations that Avid has tested.  That's a pretty old configuration, so I can understand why Avid might decide to stop testing it after a while - but that doesn't mean it won't work just as well as a couple of point-releases prior.

Overall, much easier to roll back MC versions than it is to roll back OS versions.

thanks for the reply... I may try out Yosemite and 8.4.4 for a while since it's an empty drive at the moment.  Seems like they dropped off pretty much ALL of the slot versions of Mac Pro except for the final release... funny since every company I work at these days have Mac Pro 4,1 or 5,1 systems.  I would think they might want to keep those systems on the test list.

I'll keep my old partition with 6.5.4 in tact just in case this is screwy. I do have to update the OS on THAT partition to at least 10.8.5 because the video card won't support anything before that.

Re: best MC version to install on a Mac Pro early 2009

    Sorry. Late to the party.

    I'll throw this in:

    On several Mid-2010 Mac Pro's, I have:

    • OS X 10.10.2

    • Media Composer 8.3.1 (some with Symphony, some without)

By and large, it's the most stable MC 8 environment I've seen. That's after some post-install maintenance, including:

    • Disabling Fast Scrub

    • Removing OpenIO_VirtIO.acf

    • Repairing permissions

One recurring issue: full screen mode crashes intermittently. Avid sent their best man to remote in and watch me while I did a bunch of nothing. Couldn't reproduce it.

Also, on my last project there was random crashing. Don't know why, but I lost a couple hours work more than once. No bins saved in the Attic although auto-save was set.

Like I said, it's the most stable version 8 I've seen. 8.4.4 might be better...?

Same here, Mac Pro 2009 with 48g Mem, SSD and processor upgrade (totally worth it). Happy with 8.4.4 on 10.0.5. Pretty good combo - Nitris DX box, no third party hardware.

Before that, 8.3.1 was my favorite version - except for the BWF bug.

processor upgrade? I hadn't even thought of that... what did you upgrade to?  where do you get the upgrade processor?

    OWC is one place:

Or if you can use a wrench and don't fear spreading thermal paste (it sounds harder than it is actually), you can do it yourself. I got a pair of processor off e*ay from a reknowed vendor.

pierreh: I also have a 2009 Mac Pro (8-core 2.93GHz) and have been thinking about a processor upgrade. Looks like I can increase it to an 8-core 3.33GHz.

What has made your upgrade "totally worth it"? What have you noticed besides some of the obvous boosts like faster render and transcoding, etc.?

Actually this site offers an upgrade to a 12-core, which essentially turns the 2009 Mac Pro into a 2013 trash can Mac Pro. The guy who installs these seems legit. Very tempting...

I did the 2009 to 2010 Mac Pro upgrade myself.   Went from a 2009 8 core 2.26'to a 12 core 2.93.   I would rate it as a difficult do-it-yourself project....if you are not extremely careful you will crush the pins on the processor tray.

I bought the pair of matched 6 core processors on eBay for 450 bucks.

Very brave of you, John. I think I'll pay somebody to do it...

So I'm very curious, how have you noticed improvement running Media Composer on 12 cores instead of 8?

I don't think Avid makes great use of multiple cores based on what I see in Activity Monitor.  Other apps improve greatly.

Same question one year later, as we still wait for Apple to update its now imho somewhat overprized cylinders. Who does still use an Early 2009 Mac Pro (our is 2 x 2,26 GHz) and what is the most recent MC you have installed on it?
