    Stabilisation within Frame Flex?

Have a UHD source material sequence and am working in 1080P.  Need to stabilise a shot that is pushed in via Frame Flex. How can I avoid region stabilisation 'pushing it out' (auto zoom) to avoid teh black edges created and get Avid to use the material 'left over' from the Frame Flex push in?  Any way to do this - it will make for a sharper image.  I cant step in 'under' the Frame Flex and apply stabilisation BEFORE Frame Flex...

    Re: Stabilisation within Frame Flex?

I have run a short test with a UHD/P50 clip which I have used in a 1080/P50 project. I have first linked to the UHD-clip, and then selected the the desired window using FramFlex. The sequence shows an (AMA-)linked clip with the FrameFlex symbol on it. Now I have added Avid Image Stabilizer to the linked clip. When stabilization finished, I have first rendered the clip and then created a video mixdown. I put both on the timeline, one above the other for comparison. The stabilized clip runs with the selected window and shows no black borders. May be I do not see your point.

An alternatice workflow would be, to first transcode the UHD-clip into DNxHR in a UHD-project and use this transcoded clip in the 1080/50p project as source. You can apply FrameFlex to the transcoded source.

    Re: Stabilisation within Frame Flex?

Interesting Tomas!  So, after stabilising without Auto Zoom enabled in UHD I then drop to HD and can Frameflex in to lose the black edges but without losing quality by pushing the image BEYOND its native size (and thus making it go soft - this is teh point Joaqim).

But, sadly, when you switch from the rendered UHD stabilised clip to HD it loses the UHD render so you have to render again in HD and get the edges - even if you push in to the Frame Flex clip under teh stab :-(

    Re: Stabilisation within Frame Flex?

Works here with ama linked GoPro UHD and I don´t render in UHD mode , when I switch to HD I just resize FF to the wanted view to get rid of the black borders and render from there

add...  you might want to drag the Stab effect below the FF effect inside the effect editor , had to have a look myself to refresh my mem what I did last time

I have tested it and found the same issue.

However, you can first run stabilizer without "Auto-Zoom" activated. So you will get a stabilized UHD-sequence with black borders. Render this sequnce and do a video mixdown.

Now switch your project to 1080p, create a new sequence and add the mixdown to the timeline. Enter source setting of the mixdown and set frameflex to 50-60% (as you like). Refresh your timeline and enter effect mode. You can now modify your FrameFlex window to a positioin outside the black borders. You may also apply key-frames as you like. You then get a stabilized 1080p clip without quality loss. After having done your frameflex modifications, close the editor mode, refresh the sequence. (Here you may run into the problem I have covered in another thread. In my case the new sequence only shows the correct modification after closing and re-opneneing the bin and the sequence).

    Re: Stabilisation within Frame Flex?

BTW, Avid Stabilizer Effect does not correct rolling of the camera, only horizontal and vertical movements. If you want a better (and quicker) tool, have a look at ProDAD Mercalli 4. And it gives you the option to export ProRes.

I have a workflow for BCC Opt Stab directly inside Avid doing exactly what I´ve done above with Avid Stab , will take some time to explain what and how I´m doing this but might create a tut if anyone interested, cannot work half a day for free though so it´ll be placed under the paywall where I normally add my encodes nowadays. Please PM me if it´s interesting .

    Re: Stabilisation within Frame Flex?

Cant get it to work Tomas - in UHD apply stabiliser, let it do its thing in UHD (also tried region stabiliser), switch auto zoom and scale off. Change to HD, push FF in, render and I just get black edges.  I'm not AMA linked - its consolidated XAVCi

Curiously I get the FF option IN UHD.  I dont expect FF when in native size...Hmm

Would be nice to get it to work simply - the mixdown method would work of course but we can lose mixdowns ;)

Did you notice my comment that you need to change orders of the effects once FF has been applied .

No hadnt spotted that - thanks.  Didnt think FF was moveable in a nest. Just tried it though and whenever I move the stab to after the FF the pic zooms in x4.
