    Spinning Lollipop while editing...

I have MC 8.3.1( and have tried a few other version of 8 and same issue) with a Mini Deck Link Monitor contected to a mid 2010 mac pro tower (westmehere) dual 6 core 2.66GHz machine, 24 gigs of RAM, ATI HD 5870 graphics card and a newly installed SSD HardDrive(which I thought would help but didn't make a difference compared to the 7200rpm harddrive).  Media is stored on a 7200 rpm internal drive, all running on 10.9.5(Mavericks).  When I do any basic editing or moving around on the time line, pressing play or doing an efx move, etc.  I get the spinning lollipop for 4-5 seconds before the action is engaged(and this is on SD or HD Media Composer codec material, not AMA).  I have been editing on Avid for 20 years and am at loss. There is no way this should be happeing on this machine which is beyond powerful enough for this application.  I have rebuilt databases and I have tried uninstalling and re-installing and no change.  I haven't tried going back to verison 7.  Any thoughts, ideas or solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Try disabling the hardware in the timeline. Does it immediately speed up? If so, you probably have the wrong driver version for 10.9.5 + 8.3.1. You'll have to find / test for the right one:

A single drive? Not a RAID0 set? If so, that'll slow you down too.

Install Blackmagic Disk Speed Test, and run it against your media drive. Post a screenshot with results.

You were absoutely correct.  I disabled it in the timeline and Avid worked perfectly.  I contacted BM tech support and they suggested 10.3.7(I had 10.3.2).  Installed and restarted and it is now working perfeclty.

The drive is a singel internal drive, yes but it is currently working fine although at some point I will upgrade to an SSD media drive or raid when the work calls for it.  But here is my speed test on the 7200rpm drive.

Thanks for the help and info it was a life saver.

Any idea in the Avid settings what the media cache numbers should be set to?

Don't touch those. Get Blackmagic Disk Speed Test, run it on your media drive, then post the Read and Write results. You'll see quickly what your drive can or can't do. Trust me.
