Time Machine will Crash Media Composer

Here's one possible cause of the dreaded

ERROR: "Segmentation Fault Main Thread Address 0x0

If you happen to be running Time Machine it will temporarily lock files that have changed since the last backup and when Media Composer tries to do a Auto Save or a Save on Quit the now locked file will cause a crash.

This is not the only cause of this error but if you are getting crashes with Time Machine running try turning off the Time Machine and see if the problem goes away.  Because there are so many files that could impact a save it's best to just turn off Time Machine when running Media Composer.  This will also allow you to be able to backup all files necessary for a backup whenever you re-enable Time Machine.

    Good heads up.

Not sure if I've seen it in the Avid documentation or just been told it but Time Machine has been a no no on an MC system for ages.

Re: Time Machine will Crash Media Composer

While researching this, I found a Time Machine helper app - TimeMachineScheduler:

    The developer, Stefan, confirmed:

    • He's actively maintaining it.

    • The beta (version 4) works in Yosemite and El Capitan.

    • He's using it himself with no problems.

The target user would probably be standalone Media Composer workstations with local storage. Easy overnight backups!

Anyone considering this should quit Media Composer first.
