Using JKL, sometimes 'K' doesn't stop playback?

Has anybody else noticed that sometimes the 'K' key will not stop playback, but will instead put Media Composer into slow playback? I've mentioned it before, but tech support acted like they didn't believe me. Well yesterday I was checking sync on dailies and it happened, so I grabbed my phone to document. You can see it at 1:27 (I had to shuttle around a bit to make it happen on camera).

When it happens it's really annoying, and I'd love to get this bug squashed, because it totally screws up your rhythm as you're tring to find a cut point, etc.

That happens to me each and every day at variable frequencies. Some days very often, others, once or twice.

I first encountered that bug on MC 6.0.1 .

This adds up to an ever growing heap of flaws like segmentation fault, std exception, shrinking windows, stuttering after undoing a trim, pglue impolite port number, faulty levels on exported QT, and so forth.

I've seen every single one of those bugs being mentionned on this forum and, still, they remain alive and well.

Version 8.2 added some new fun stuff too, but I can't talk about them yet because I am working on an unqualified Yosemite release. And I won't talk about the multitude of removed shortcuts and functionalities since version 4 either. Wrong thread.

    Good luck !

Yeah, I think i noticed this in v6 as well. It also happens to me most every day at varying levels of 'annoyingness.' When I spoke to tech support about it they said their keyboard handling was done using an outside framework, so even if the problem existed, they weren't sure how to fix it. Well I've now provided video proof that it exists, so perhaps they can get in touch with their framework developer and find out why 'K' is sometimes being interpretted as 'KL,' ie: slow play?

Re: Using JKL, sometimes 'K' doesn't stop playback?

Marianna is going to try to reproduce this on Monday so she can push it to engineering for a fix. I hope she can. Does anybody else have any thoughts about how best she might make this happen? For me, I feel like it happens when I am rapidly transitioning from a fast scrub to stop, then normal playback speed. ie: when I hit 'L' two or three times quickly to fast forward, then when I get to my desired destination I hit 'K' to stop, 'J' for a second to back up, then 'L' to play what I wanted to see. It's certainly not scientific, but something like that scenario seems to always be the case when this happens.

For me I never get the slow motion thing but I frequently get a half second audio audio loop going that won't go away until I hit play again. I'm not sure the exact sequence of events that leads to this but I think it's usually a similar scenario (will try to pay more attention next time it happens).

Well it sounds like there's definitely a bug in the framework Avid is using for reading keyboard input. Not sure who's framework they're using, but hopefully they're willing to take a look at this code and figure it out.

Re: Using JKL, sometimes 'K' doesn't stop playback?

This bug has existed, off and on, since I first started cutting on Avid in 1996.  I've come to view it as an old friend.  Generally the space bar works when k gets wonky, so it's pretty easy to work around.

Yeah, the space key is always the fallback. But it does screw with your rhythm when you have to suddenly switch to another keystroke because your preferred one randomly no longer works. Would be best if they could just dig into their keyboard handling and figure out why sometimes 'K' is seen as 'K-L'.

Re: Using JKL, sometimes 'K' doesn't stop playback?

For me I can trigger it if:

    1. SHIFT KEY or CAPS LOCK is pressed
    2. EDIT REVIEW is used to play

I sometimes get it if I've used the JKL keys or the SPACE BAR to play, but that is a bit random, however once it is happening it seems to need the shift key or caps lock modifier.

    Ralph,

Funny, sort of, but it turns out I started that thread in 2012 too. I'd forgotten about it, but obviously it's a bug that's annoyed me for a while.

Experienced this problem for the first time this week on one of our rental Macs running v7.0.6. Rebuilding user settings seemed to fix the problem. Credit to Steve Hullfish for the suggestion.

    Hi everyone,

in our rapidly changing world its good to see that there are things that won't change - like this bug in MC Big Smile

Google found me this thread because I'm actually on PC but it doesn't seem to make any difference. I'm having exactly the same experience with the K key not stopping but slowing down playback. I have brand new settings as we've just upgraded 7.0 to the latest 2018.12.1 version - this bug is a master survivor (though as I remember it was quite rare in 7.0, now I meet it a couple of times every day).

This threat is the same basically. I have stop on the space bar, that does just the same you describe. I installed 2018.5 yesterday, no problems with this so far.
