@Jeroen van Eekeres: I saw your post on Transfer Manager, and it makes sense. But it sounds like that's intended for Avid shared storage environments or as a stem for another media playback product, like GrassValley's stuff. I just want a better MDV native to OS X.

I get that and you're right. The transfer manager was made for communicating with playout and ingest servers. But it can actually be used for transferring media in general. You're also right that all these interplay parts are only for the Windows platform.

I'm just saying that Avid has the know how to build exactly what you want and I share the need for what seem to be obvious improvements (integrations) of media management tools. Both on Mac and PC.

More third party apps aren't necessarily the ideal solution, IMO. Avid really needs to make a push to enable more organizational functionality within the core product(s) - interplay is wonderful, but expensive and impractical in many scenarios.

To hold over the gap between MDV, MediaMover, MediaCopy, and a future inclusion of organizational processing into the editor, I have been working with the folks from Marquis Broadcast on a product called "Project Parking". http://www.marquisbroadcast.com/project-parking.html

@Jeroen van Eekeres: Just tried installing Transfer Manager under Wine. Wouldn't you know it? Dongle required. Maybe Avid thinks MDV and the like are a conflict of interest? Does it cannibalize their current offerings? I don't think so. They just need to fill this far simpler gap. Maybe I'll just ask 'em.

@NYNutz: I scoped out Project Parking too. Looks amazing, but seems like handing me a broadsword when a steak knife will do.

Totally. But here we are in 2014. For small-to-midsize post houses, MediaMover's back to being the only game in town. MDV is dead, Media Copy's dead, and we're back to waiting on Avid.

Maybe a Kickstarter or Indiegogo project's in order?

Has anybody tried to contact the MDV developer? Perhaps he'd share his source?

Re: Let's Make the Next MediaMover or MDV

anyway, for now i have only code for reading .pmr files

To read .MDB file you have to get OMFtoolkit from AVID (Open media framework intercharge toolkit libraries).
For reading MXF meatdata you need MXFtoolkit (AVID) or ..Ingex MXFLib
For avid bin specification (.AVB) - you need to contact AVID.

also you have to understand how ALL AMA plugins works. (XDCAM,P2,RED,Quicktime etc...).

and finally when you ll  get all these toolkits you  will be able to build metadata dependencies.

p.s. also you have to be a good programmer.....

Re: Let's Make the Next MediaMover or MDV

Looking at the source code is pretty amazing. Looks like you were refactoring with the intent of making "MDVx?" Or is "x" just a version placeholder? (Don't know if you wanna get into that on the forum.)

I'll check with Avid on getting these other libraries. Funny you brougt up Ingex. I meant to add that to a previous post, then ask if you thought it was legit. I guess I got my answer. Wink

Maybe in an ideal world you'd want to understand all the AMA plugins, but a lot of that ends up being transcoded to DNxHD MXF's. Does in our case. Anything that isn't transcoded doesn't playback. Then there's exporting - maybe it will, maybe it won't. To me, AMA is just a way to preview dailies or log before transcoding. So I'm only concerned with what's in /Avid MediaFiles/MXF/N. To start, anyway.

Really, if I could just take MDV and run it through CocoaTron (if it worked), MDV would be great. My big goals would be (in order from most to least):

    1. Native OS X UI
    2. PMR / MDB scanning
    3. Bin scanning
    4. Media folder scanning

I'll see what Avid says. Then we'll see. Any other advice? (Did you see those messages I left?)

I think the hope is that Avid will see that robust and feature rich Media Management that is the same cross platform is a feature they need to provide.

Many folks will avoid 3rd party options to avoid support issues and long term stability/compatability issues.
