Squeeze 8.5Pro > Avid MXF: Equivalent to RGB or 709 Legacy Import?

I have been importing some hacked 23.976 GH-2 AVCHD Files in v5.5.3 using Avid legacy import with 709 setting.

Been having random freezes mid-way on my under-powered system and have been considering using Squeeze > Avid MXF instead.

Does anyone know if Squeeze's exports to Avid MXF 115 look equivalent to using RGB (darker), 709, or none of the above?

Is there a setting/preference/trick possible which will tweak Squeeze's output to match what I get with 701/legacy, beyond applying a filter upon export?

You are confusing import and export. More here.

If you were to encode to DNxHD with the RGB option (in Quicktime or using MC's import), you would compress the luma levels from full swing to studio swing.

If you were to encode to DNxHD with the 601/709 option (in QT or via MC's Import), this would keep the levels as they are, as you are basically telling the encoder that the source is already in video luma levels and don't need alteration. That will work, even if the luma levels are not legal.

Unfortunately, I don't know which method Squeeze uses (I would suppose NO change in levels, equivalent to using 601/709 during MC import). I did ask them, as there are other things about Squeeze's MXF that amaze me (only 29.97fps, no 23/24/25, only the top two datarates).

hi Job, please evaluate, I have it working up here, also created one or two Pal MXF tutorials long ago, I must admit I haven´t checked for a while.

     I must admit I haven´t checked for a while.

Had to check just out of curiousity and in Squeeze 9,02.81 Pro there is a scrolldown for 709 or rgb and another scrolldown for selectable codecs, both 1080 and 720 so maybe upscaling or downscaling also is possible when transcoding to mxf.

Also lots of framerates to select between, I don´t think that Squeeze does framerate conversions however.

Nice to see that colour level selector, thinking closer about this I can remember having discussed this with the Sorenson techs at the same time as the luma scale filter was introduced.

Doesn´t seem to work though, I´m getting the same levels in MC using both options so time for a reminder.

Thanks Job and Tomas. So, 8.5Pro is now outdated in this regard, with a new option present in v9.0, but it shows

no visible difference after Squeezing from the same clip via RGB or 701. Do I have that right?

Job, I *think* my avid-ready MXF's from Squeeze v8.5Pro play back (i.e. look) darker in MC. Darker than when I use Avid software (v5.5.3) importing (legacy) using its 701 setting. I *think* that Squeezed MXF showed up darker than same file imported using Avid's RGB setting.

    To be continued, I guess.

Did a quick test, added a 25p mov to a project, added one of the two  DNxHD presets to the job (only choice is 145 or 220), can select only one framerate (29.97).

Also tried creating a fresh MXF preset. Same difference.

Thanks Tomas, but I am not sure I am getting your picture's point.

Looks like the last two panels--RGB and 709 are showing the same level.

Your AMA panel looks brighter, but that has nothing to do with SS, right?

AMA is the future, but for my purposes, I am stuck using legacy import of my AVCHD on v5.5.3. So I just

wanted to compare legacy 702 import to my v8.5 Avid MXF. No worries... I know this is old tech at this point.

Job-- on my v8.5 SS I get options for 23.98 anf 25 after changing field encoding to progressive/ in advanced tab. Is that missing in v9?

Yes, correct, so no difference between 709 and RGB export, wanted to show that with a scope to be scientific and not just having opinions and feelings.

The ama clip was just the origin avchd clip directly from the cam for comparance
