MC 7 W/ SYM OPTION: Lack of backwards compatibility with Dongle

I run SYM 5.5.3.7 on a desktop system, and use the same dongle to run SYM 6.5.x on a laptop. After purchasing the upgrade to include MC 7 w/ the SYM option, we are now told that MC 7 w/ the SYM option is NOT backwards compatible w/ SYM 5.5.3.7, only MC 5.5.3.7 or SYM 6.x.

The customer advocate indicated that this was due to the 64bit structure of MC 7 vs. the 32bit architecture of v5.5x. This makes absolutely no sense, as of course SYM v6.x is also 64bit, and the dongle is shared perfectly between SYM 6.5x and SYM 5.5.3.7. It must have something to do with the stripping off of SYM, now an option in v7.

Perhaps I'm the only one who needs the backwards compatibility w/ SYM 5.5.3.7 and v7 - for now, the paid upgrade is useless to me as I need to keep the dongle-based SYM 5.5.3.7 system running. I would also like an explanation why this is so, why clients weren't better informed prior to paying for an upgrade, and if Avid plans to fix this lack of compatibilty, as backwards compatibility (aty least w/ a dongle) has always been an Avid feature.

I don't understand, I was told that "Media Composer 7.0 + Symphony Option authorized dongles will enable a customer to authorize and run multiple versions back of Symphony".

Re: MC 7 W/ SYM OPTION: Lack of backwards compatibility with Dongle

Here is the clarification again - I highlighted the stuff that might have been missed

Bin Compatibility: Media Composer 7.0 and NewsCutter 11.0 with earlier versions of Media Composer and NewsCutter:

    • Media Composer 7.0 and NewsCutter 11.0 bins are compatible in earlier versions of Media Composer and NewsCutter. The latest maintenance releases ( 6.0.4/10.0.4 and 6.5.3/10.5.3) contain fixes in order for these bins to open without inconsistent behavior.

    • There are a lot of new features in Media Composer 7.0 and NewsCutter 11.0 that will NOT function in earlier versions of the software, so in certain cases these newer features will not be present in the sequence when opened.

Media Composer 7.0 and NewsCutter 11.0 Software License Logic Enhancements:

    • Media Composer 7.0 and NewsCutter 11.0 software licensing (Activation IDs) enables customers to run one whole software version back.  This means that if a customer purchases a Media Composer 7.0 or a NewsCutter 11.0 license, they can authorize and run Media Composer 6.0.4/6.5.3 and NewsCutter 10.0.4/10.5.3 products.  This also means that is a customer purchases a Media Composer 7.0 with Symphony Option they can authorize and run Symphony 6.0.4/6.5.3 or 7.
    • Customers who wish to run previous versions of Media Composer or NewsCutter software should uninstall their current Media Composer 7.0 and 6.x, or NewsCutter 11.0 and 10.x software, install Media Composer 6.0.4/6.5.3 or NewsCutter 10.0.4/10.5.3 using the full installer (NOT from a patch installer), and then use their Media Composer 7.0 or NewsCutter 11.0 System ID and Activation ID when Activating the software license.
    • Media Composer 7.0 + Symphony Option software licensing (Activation IDs) will enable a customer to authorize and run Symphony 6.0.4/6.5.3.
    • Customers who wish to run previous versions of Symphony software should uninstall their Media Composer 7.0 or Symphony 6.x software, install Symphony 6.0.4/6.5.3 from the full installer (NOT from a patch), and then  use their Media Composer 7.0 System ID and Symphony Option Activation ID when Activating the software license.

Media Composer 7.0 and NewsCutter 11.0 Dongle Licenses:

    • Media Composer 7.0 and NewsCutter 11.0 dongle logic has not changed in this release.  Dongles will enable customers to authorize and run multiple versions back of the software.
    • Media Composer 7.0 + Symphony Option authorized dongles will enable a customer to authorize and run multiple versions back of Symphony.  Only 6.0.4 and 6.5.3 has been modified to understand the Symphony Option bit on the dongle. Anything older will not launch Symphony.
    • Customers who wish to run previous versions of Media Composer, Symphony or NewsCutter should either uninstall their v7.0/v11.0 software and then install full versions of 6.0.4/6.5.3 or 10.0.4/10.5.3, respectively, or install the patch versions of 6.0.4/6.5.3 or 10.4./10.5.3 on top of the current Media Composer 6.0.x/6.0.5.x, Symphony 6.0.x/6.5.x, or NewsCutter 10.0.x/10.5.x.

what was the original version you bought with the dongle?  If it was prior to 6.5 then a 7 dongle will read it.

Just to update - SYM 5.5.4 is out, and a v7.0x blasted dongle will now run SYM 5.5.4/6.04/6.5.4... and MC 7 w/ SYM option. Ineed backwards compatibility w/ 5.5.4, and Marianna assures me this will work (though my 5.5.4 system is still on the other coast...)

Can someone confirm this? I just updated my dongle for MC7 w Sym option for my new Mac Pro but still need access to my older Nitris DX system running Symphony 5.5.3.7. When I try to launch Symphony 5.5.3.7 on the old system I get a "system not licsened to run this software" error. I thought the dongle is supoosed to be backwards compatible? If I update to 5.5.4 will this resolve the issue?

    Thanks,

Yes, as of v5.5.4 you can now use a Dongle licensed for 7.0. I suggest you update to SN 5.5.5.
