Hi All.
I have a client who is intending to send me some French subtitles in a XML document, for a film I've cut. Typically he's going to send them the day before he needs the video delivered, and I haven't had to do this before. Is it an easy process to incorporate them onto my timeline? They've been done to a signed off cut, so will they automatically be timed to match the sync that we have? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
I suspect that, if you want to finish in AvidMC, you'll either have to ask them to provide in a different format or deal with the conversion yourself.
The Avid Subcap effect (under Generator) can import either "EBU N19" binary files (good luck) or "AvidDS" text files which take the format:
00:00:02:00 00:00:03:00 Bob, are you there?
00:00:04:18 00:00:06:13 Yes, Sam. Just behind the car.
There are various third party apps which may help inc the ones by Bouke at VideoToolshed and Belle Nuite.
I'd certainly think it worth contacting one of them to see if they can help... the Avid SubCap effect is pretty new and I don't suppose you'd be the only one wanting this type of conversion.
You could think about stripping out the xml markup and using Autotitler in Marquee (but you'd have to lose timecode and formatting information)
Good Luck
WHy would they think an XML of the subtitles is what you need?
You could counter by sending them the finished video as a series of still images.....
As Trevor says there are a limited number of ways of getting bulk subtitles into MC and you will need to get to grips with that process and the sources you need to make it work in advance of a tight deadline.
I've hacked a few subtitle STL files to work with the subcap effect and it sort of works but it's still a fiddly process.

Unless we are thinking of this the wrong way... use the xml file to create the DVD that they probably want - with optional subtitles rather than use the Avid at all.
