Shared projects become local - ISIS 5000 & MC552 mac

    Hello

For the last 6 months I have been suffering with a strange and very arbortary problem. I have numerous shared projects that for some reason will, during an edit session, become local. I realise this because when I do a save or clsoe a bin, the lock bin icon disappears as do the bold bin graphics. The avid attic starts to record local but not the project itself of the media, they stay on ther server. A restart of the machine and all is back to normal. The real problem is that once the bug starts, all the machines sharing the project start recording one over the other, like in FCP, which is catastrophic.

The strangest thing is that I have this problem since about april. At the time I had a unity 5 and MC v5 running on macs over fibre. This summer I swapped the unity for an isis 5000 with new macs and a new MC5.5.2 but the problem continues.

Even stranger thing is that I have another installation is another building that is nearly identical and they don't have the problem. The difference is that the issis that works is purely ethernet and the one that is difficult has ethernet to fibre conversion.

I notice that I am not alone on this so I was wondering if anyone else has this issue?

    Many thanks

Re: Shared projects become local - ISIS 5000 & MC552 mac

In the hope that someone might be able to help.
Server side, the .lck file system seems to function correctly. Therefore, I am looking at a client side problem. It seems that MC no longer recognises the file sharing protocol, but continues to use the volumes as if they were connected locally. The MC respects the media creation protocol, using the right media folder. In short, the client decides to ignore the .lck file.

Also, I find that the bins often do not have a .log file attached. I do not know what the consequence is of this.
I cannot find anything the machine logs that indicates that the machine no longer  sees the server.
If I crash the MC and relaunch the app, the problem continues. If i crash the MC and disconnect the issis then relaunch both, the problems resolves itself until the next bug.
    Any help is most welcome.

Hey Chris, I have never heard of this issue.  What OS are you currently running with 5.5.2?  What were you running before you transferred to the ISIS--were the clients running 5.5.2 with the same OS?  Does it happen to new projects or just older projects copied over from the older system?  Does it happen to all clients on ISIS or just a few?  Are you keeping the Client Manager software open after you mount the drives or do you close the app once the volumes are mounted?

Thank you very much for your interest.

The clients are currently on 10.6.6. Before the machines were on 10.6.4 with MC 5.0.2.

The problem happens on either new or legacy projects and appears on all clients but not at the same time. The problem is completely random. The client app is often kept open, but it depends on the editor.

I have another ISIS 5000 in the same config but don't have the same problem. I am wondering if it might be a ATTO card issue as this is the only difference with other installations. Strangely, I have connection no performance issues, just this problem with clients not reading the .lck files

Re: Shared projects become local - ISIS 5000 & MC552 mac

What version of ISIS are you running?

We have had experiences where a bad cable was in-line and project workspaces were disconnected while editing (on ISIS7000).  When this happened, the project did not become local, it just started throwing up errors that it couldn't save .bin files or project files. But on that note, re-reading your first post I am confused...

the attic becomes local, but the clients continue writing to what folder in the project volume on ISIS?  Not their own...right?

Is the Atto card the same one you used pre ISIS?  So, these clients have an Atto Card (fiber) that gets converted to ethernet before hitting the ISIS directly?

    Isis 3.2.

The Atto cards are the same as before. There is a conversion that has been validated by avid.

I have made a very strict bin naming convention (no strange figures) but it continues.

What is strange is that it is just an issue of why the app at a moment no longer realises that it is sharing. I also have a terrablock server. On the avid sharing part, there is button that makes the  the volumes present to the avid as sharable. This makes me think that there is maybe a command in MC that can switch the app from local to shared and back again.

I am still having a problem visualizing your setup and the exact problem.  Sorry if I am being dense.  How many ISIS engines, how many clients?  Fiber Atto card to what?  Why is there a terrablock server involved?  Do you have a terrablock server on the other system that works?  Was the terrablock server present pre-ISIS?  Also, what exactly is happening to the bins on ISIS when the bug hits--Clients just write over eachother and no one has a lock anymore?

Re: Shared projects become local - ISIS 5000 & MC552 mac

Sorry. I was not clear. The terrablock is on another site. The terra works in a more basic way, showing the mechanism that Avid uses to mount and format volumes.

The ISIS 5000, in question, has 5 clients that were connected to a Unity v5 until this summer. To avoid recabling the installation with ethernet, I use the fibre cables and atto clients cards to a fibre switch, which is fed by a 10giga output of the ISIS. The problem existed before the ISIS was installed. I hoped that changing the server would make the problem go away.

I have a third ISIS on a third site that is setup in a virtually identical way, except that there is no fibre, only ethernet and I do not have the problem. This seems to be a unique problem for the installation in question. The problem is that it is installed to edit one of the most viewed TV sports shows in france, therefore the pressure is on. Avid France are aware of the issue but have no solution to offer ( and I don't think it interests them that much).

okay that makes much more sense, thanks.  Is it possible for you to directly connect 4 of the clients over ethernet to ISIS or is distance an issue?  I would defnitely give that a shot is possible.  Also, what switch and Atto cards are you using?  Seems like that is where the problem is.
