No, and that's why I don't decompose imports.

Traditionally, Avid did not read TC on imports. this meant it assigned a TC (Default 1 hour) to every QT imported.

So let's say you import a 10 second clip. Avid sees a 10 second clip starting at 1 hour.

Now you use 1 second of that clip that is 5 seconds into the clip. So you are using 1:00:05:00- 1:00:06:00.

Now you decompose the sequence with 30 frame handles. Avid creates a new clip that goes from 1:00:4:00- 1:00:07:00.

You batch reimport this and since Avid didn't read TC on imports, it assumes the first frame of the clip is the first frame of your new clip. So you import a clip that is 3 seconds long and says it starts at 1:00:04:00 but it is really starting at the beginning of the QT movie. So what it thinks is 1:00:04:00 is actually what was 1:00:00:00. Which means that it will be 4 seconds off everywhere it falls in your timeline.

Avid's early solution was to give us the option of decomposing WITHOUT selecting imports. Prior to that you had to batch import everything BEFORE you decomposed. This still doesn't't work if the offline editors assigned a source name to the clip (Useful for tracking via EDLs, etc.) in which case Avid then assumes it is a captured source vs. an imported one and includes it in the decompose even if "Imports" are deselected..

All of this SHOULD be considered a moot point now that Avid recognizes TC on imports, but since that is only in the most current version, it hasn't trickled into my workflow enough to verify it's stability.

Are you saying if you decompose an import, the reimport will correctly import only portion of the import reflected in the decompose!?

I've had a similar issue when the AEs have added a tape name to imported clips. Usually they would add a tape name to reflect which disk the import came from, I just checked and it is still possible to add a tape name to an imported QT on ver 3.1.2. Make sure there is no relinking going on to the imported media before the decompose. In my case the AE was relinking before a decompose and the sequence would link to the first import with the same tape name since they all started with 1:00:00:00 if there were multiple imports from previous shows which came from the same disk the sequence would link to the first one it found based on the tape name and time code. I'd suggest checking to see if they are modifying the imports by adding a source. Perhaps when you only decompose imports it ignores the added tape name of the picture imports, that is if that's what is being done before it gets to you.

All the offline machines are MC 3.0 as well. Its so weird. Im just telling the AE to decomp imported clips first get them on line and then do Captured. I'm going to switch over to 3.5 soon so hopefully that will fix it . As well as the "enablecommitmulticam" bug

I work on an Animal Planet show that is 90 percent CGI imports (only the interviews are on tape). I decompose these sequences all the time, and I've never seen this happen. I also online another show that uses a lot of imported stills with StageTools Moving Picture plug in. Never seen it there, either. What type of system are your offlines coming from? If they're being cut on MC 3.5, could it be a problem with different software versions? We keep all our systems at the same level (it's good to work in a closed house)

I never decompose imports, so I can't say I've seen this. In the past, decomposing imports just led to trouble since Avid doesn't track TC on imports. Starting in 3.5 it does, but I haven't hammered it enough to trust it yet.

Has anyone seen this. i decompose my sequence for uprez and it changes the name to all the imported clips to the same name. If I select decomp imported clips first its ok but if then I select captured clips or captured clips and imported clips it changes the name. It looks like it is changing all my picture imports as the lower third graphics quick time are fine.
