Avid should have fixed this years ago - Marianna logged it as a new bug back in Februrary - that's ludicrous, engineering have known about this since 2005.

This is one that we should not let rest. Audio sync issues with the whole of the JVC GY HD series have been there since day 1. All other major NLE's seem to work with these cameras, only Avid can't solve the problem. I cannot get Avid to even digitise from tape without problems in HDV mode (we use 25P but I believe the problem is there at all frame rates).

Whether it is a lack of effort or bad communication with JVC it is unacceptable.

Re: Will MC v.3 capture 24p material shot with a JVC GY-HD200 camera?

I thought we had all given up on this one. Nice to see its still on the agenda. I'm running 3.1.1 on a Harpertown MacPro and getting terrible sync drift in a 720p/25 project. FCP works just fine, as does MPEG Streamclip. Capturing wild and transcoding with third-party software is absurd and not a viable solution in a busy professional editing environment. Are we seriously suggesting that it's okay to lose TC and source tape data?

Anyway, if anyone know if and when (which version) this bug was fixed, please let me know!

Re: Will MC v.3 capture 24p material shot with a JVC GY-HD200 camera?

My camera is not 'gathering dust' I just find it ridiculous that, after using the camera since Mid-2006, I have to use a third party piece of software.

Hey, I went out and spent $5k on a MacPro and another editing solution to 'workaround' this issue. That's money that I spent, that I 'should' not have had to spend. That's an investment that I already made in Avid - that did not give me what was advertised. My investment in Avid became as good as my 401k in recent months. Useless.
I have been a supporter and believer of AVID. But when it comes to JVC and AVID and a lame excuse with no fix...pheww! If AVID says is a problem with these cameras, then, why has almost every other NLE program out there has taken the time and given it the importance,AVID, has not into making it work. Think how many techno advantages in performance AVID has achieved, yet, not fix a long issue with a camera that others have found solutions in their apps. I use VEGAS, it works wonderful and no audio drift. I have shot content for a media company and they have no issues with their FCP. I shoot content for another, and they use EDIUS...no prob.

AVID, I do not want to change and migrate completely to another NLE apps and I do not want to loose a big part of my investment and love and trust in AVID. We may be few; Do something quick, do not forget us.

Not from me sir.... There are many things I will back Avid on (having been a user since the early 90's) but their 'support' of JVC GY-HD line is not one of them. (Keeping it U.S. based) From the 100 to the HD50, to the 200, to the 250 and, on the recently updated supported devices, the FS4ProHD (which was listed back in 2005/06 as 'works great with Avid' - in SD I found out), none of these actually work in 720/30 format.

I have footage shot on the entire range of JVC HD line - including the FS4ProHD - and the outcome is the same.. and I don't know where the 'few frames' of audio drift comes from... 3-8 seconds of audio drift. Same thing, playback from ANY of these devices - no issues.

Capture/import to Avid - not so much.

What I find quite funny is how, in one document, the "example" of working with the JVC HDV footage is talking about using the HD100 (another FS device), but no "example" of working with actual tape.

Damn it... I am getting more and more upset as I go through this thread and type this stuff... I think a little nap is needed before I post a ** RANT WARNING ** from my past.

Re: Will MC v.3 capture 24p material shot with a JVC GY-HD200 camera?

I'd like to echo videovic's thoughts and add a few of my own and some questions.

It seems those of us with JVC 200 cameras are left where we were 2 years ago with Xpress Pro and handed more of the "we're working on it" spin. I have waited patiently and listened to the promises to no avial.

After numerous private email assurances from March of this year, from an official Avid source, that the new release of MC would support the JVC 200 with "720p/59.94, 50, 29.97, 25, and 23.976 capture" this is not the case!

And so my Avid investment keeps collecting dust with each passing year. I guess there is a reason that Edius Broadcast software came free with the camera when purchased. I am relieved that I waited and have not purchased the MC upgrade from Pro yet, if ever.

Apparently "the Avid string along" is alive and well inside of the "new thinking" badge.

So, what are the exact JVC camera Device templates available in MC 3.0? Just GY-HD250? Even Xpress Pro has two templates (GY-HD100 60 and GY-HD200 60) even though they don't work. Why are they included? My camera plays everything back in sync just fine so I'm not sure where that comes from. Can one use the the 250 template with the 200 camera in MC 3.0? Anyone?

I'm sure I'll be berated for this post but this ever lingering state of affairs in relation to these JVC cameras is not only disheartening but disgusting as well. <img src="http://community.avid.com/emoticons/emotion-12.gif" alt="Angry " />

Re: Will MC v.3 capture 24p material shot with a JVC GY-HD200 camera?

The JVC 100 is listed as certified - and, more recently, the 250. The "drift" is only apparent in Avid - using other editing programs, Liquid, or others.... the drift does not occur. Also, the audio/video is in sync for, approx. 1 minute before the drift occurs during the capture process. Upon playback the issue is remains..
videovic... Ultimately I went out and got another editing application on a MacPro system. Good thing is when Avid get the JVC line actually working, Avid and the other editing application can co-exist on the same system.

Mr. Russo... this has been a major issue since 2006 (which is when I first began using the JVC line). Even with the .m2t wrapper files from the Firestore FS4Pro have the same issues. I can have a file captured to the FS4Pro and, after importing that file, the drift will also be apparent.. so it is beyond the capture process.. this is a file transfer. I can playback the original material, from tape or the FS4 and NO drift is apparent through any clips.

Just to echo videovic. Avid and JVC made the big NAB announcement in 2005 of their collaboration in bringing the JVC HDV line and Avid together... this is 3 years of not working. I am not using any of the off-frame rates either.. 720/30 that's it. Now SD Avid, JVC and FS4Pro are excellent - I cannot fault that... it's when it comes to the HDV world that expectations, don't fall short, but simply died before they were born.

See HERE for one of my threads after numerous back-and-forth with tech support.

Re: Will MC v.3 capture 24p material shot with a JVC GY-HD200 camera?

Thank You Bob for looking into it and everyone else interested and affected in some way. The strange thing is the JVC 200 is technically the same as the 250, only, the 250 has added studio adapters which add sdi & genlock features. But thru 1394, shouldn't it be the same data ?

Avid touted so much, even on press releases, that there would finally be support for the JVC 24/25p HDV format on MC3. Again, we waited; it never happened in XPPro days. AVID should release a warning to post on AVID Store, resellers sites, and press releases, that there are still issues with JVC and avoid misleading a potential upgrader or buyer, and saving them from surprise headaches and expense.

I understand techs may be looking into the problem, but for us who our work relies and to an extent depends on editing on AVID, deserve a little more attention. We may have purchased equipment under the trust that AVID , according to press releases and features and specs posted, was finally going to release a solution to our needs and are bound to find out later on, the hard way, that we need to look for other editing solutions because the claim was not accurate. An answer like ,"we will try and have a fix to this issue promptly, perhaps on the next update", will be slightly more conforting than waiting endlessly like in XPPro. = possibility to find other Apps who are working more diligently on this matters.
Sorry folks, had to let it out. Never-the-less, thank you. And thank people like Bob who listen and I'm sure you wish for a solution for all of us. But AVID techs should get on it and not just say it will happen when it happens if it happens, attitude.

Thanks.

Re: Will MC v.3 capture 24p material shot with a JVC GY-HD200 camera?

As I understand it, because of the different way the audio and video is captured to tape, not in sync, specific engineering work must be done to support these cameras. It sounds like this work has been done with Liquid. Avid is working to add support for these cameras at a future date.

Unfortunately I can't elaborate much more, that's the answer I received from engineering.
