Importing clips into Avid - Resolution mismatch

Hello Avid Forum,

I am confused about resolution for importing graphics and movie clips into AVID, and am trying to understand the process. ( I am supplying graphics to Video production, and am not a video editor )

In FIRST SCENARIO, I have been providing slide/clips from Movie Maker to be imported into Avid movie. These source graphics were first created in Photoshop (using Adobe Video preset NTSC DV / 720x480 non-square pixels), imported into Movie Maker (transitions added) then saved as NTSC 720x480 4:3 avi files.

We are creating a web-version of final movie, and the above inserted clips are displaying shorter than the native Avid portion. (We are getting extra black space at top and bottom of the added clips).

However, if I create the Photoshop graphics at 640x480 in standard square pixels > import to Movie Maker > save the clip as NTSC DV 720x480 avi format > import to Avid, the clips DO match the rest of the Avid movie. Or should I start with 720x540 graphic files?

I just do not understand what is going on. Technically the Avid defaults to resolution of 720x486, yet web output is proportional to 640x480 (?)

Meanwhile any graphics I set up for DVD menus which are brought into Adobe Encore, require that I create in Photoshop using the Video Preset (NTSC DV 720x480)

SECOND SCENARIO:

B-Roll video that was exported from Avid Liquid into Avid Pro ALSO appears mismatched in resolution to the rest of the Avid timeline (has the same extra black space at top & bottom as described in Scenario 1)

Can you please advise me?

encoded audio loses volume

In order to make my show fit on a dvd I encoded the audio at 256. I compared the original wave file to the new ac3 file and the original wave file was almost 2x as loud. Is this typical?

Video is great in Avid; bad in QT, Squeeze, DVDit

I have a 5-yr-old system. Avid Xpress DV 4.5.1 with QT 6.5, Sorenson Squeeze 3.5, and Sonic DVDit! 5.1.1. I have only worked with aspect ratios of 4:3 in the past, but have since started using a JVC Everio camcorder with 16:9.

I haven't noticed a huge loss in quality in the past, but since upgrading to my new camera, the loss is obvious. The first issue I notice is the interlacing going on in QuickTime when exporting as a reference file (horizontal lines everywhere, especially in bright areas). If I go directly to DVD using this file from QT, the objects appear blurred.

If I use Squeeze, The picture worsens and becomes jumpy--especially with light sources (kinda gives you a headache). I imagine this has something to do with the fact that I haven't upgraded from the version that came with Avid, and so I can't change the video output in Squeeze to 16:9. I click the "Upgrade" button when the window pops up, but it leads me nowhere.

My goal is pretty simple: to get the video I edited to look the same on DVD as it did in Avid. How is this possible if the Quicktime files (my only real option for export) are junk? Can I still get a version of Squeeze that will work with my setup?

mpeg problems update

I deleted the five .dll files recomended in the threads but then avid would not open, so have to reinstall them, therefore am gonna have to buy some third party software to encode quicktime into mpeg, I was wondering if any of you knows some software that works with Avid Xpress DV 3.5.

The last job I did was 80 minutes long. Using CCE basic I encoded the video at 2 pass VBR with a min. of 4K & Max of 8 k and average of 6. My other settings remain the same: Mode - DVD; elementary stream; quality setting natural picture - "complex." The resulting m2v file was 2.6 gig.

Today I encoded the same type of show (interview with pictures) that was 88 minutes long and I used the same settings but the resulting video m2v size was 4.8 gig.

Show #1 was made up of an interview and stills. Show 2 had, in addition to stills, a number of movie clips. (These were QT ref files inside the timeline). Before exporting both timelines to CCE I did a video mixdown - then exported as QT reference files.

Would the fact that I'm using video clips inside show #2 be the reason for the bigger size? The audio - as is - is about a gig.

C++ runtime error

Recently my computer motherboard packed up and someone rebuilt it with a new motherboard, graphics card, etc

The operating system is Windows XP Pro and everything seems to work ok except AVID!

Everytime I try to open it it comes up with a C++ runtime error and will not open.

I've tried un-installing and re-installing the software but no joy.

Does anyone know how I can fix this and get back to editing?

mpeg problems

Am trying to export my sequence as an mpeg file, but a window appears with the message: "process failed, go to the console", and the console has this messgae: "could not initialize authorscript".

Media Offline?

I edited a sequence last week. All was well. Tonight I get onto Avid, capture a new batch of footage and start to edit. Everything seems fine. However, I take a look at the sequence I edited last week (same project) and the whole thing just says Media Offline. I go look at the source clips, and they say it too. What happened? I deleted nothing!

Why can't things just work.

digital cut: sync problems

Hello, I finished editing my film project in Avid Xpress and now I want to burn it directly from avid to external DVD, that I connected to my PC. I'm using digital cut, and everything seemed ok, but I after burning 13 minutes, I lost sync. Does anyone know, what am I doing wrong?

My external DVD is Panasonic DMR-EH55, and its connected to PC with Fire Wire cable.

Help with export settings from Newscutter to Xpress please?

I'm trying to import video from a flash drive into my Avid Xpress at my home. The video has been exported onto the flash drive from an Avid Newscutter. I have gotten errors when trying to import that video to Xpress such as: .mov is not supported, and MFX errors. I guess I'm looking for the proper settings on Newscutter when I'm exporting video onto the flashdrive. There has got to be a way to import video onto Xpress by way of a flashdrive from a Newscutter Avid, no? Could someone point me in the right direction please? Thanks.

Im in desperate need of some help. I have a mpeg file (M1v) which plays fine in Windows media player and realtime player but Im unable to open it in Avid, as every time I do I get the error message saying 'not valid domain header.'

This release is expected to be the final update to the Avid Media Composer v3.5.x. This release contains various bug fixes and performance improvements.

Xpress Pro using Pinnacle capture card

Background:

Changed from Pinnacle 8 DV to Avid Xpress Pro several years ago. Uninstalled Pinnacle.
Kept Pinnacle capture card, worked fine in Avid
Having new computer built to handle P2 media. Salvaged Pinnacle firewire capture card from old computer
Computer technician has asked for Pinnacle driver for capture card. Pinnacle installation discs misplaced or lost.

Questions:

Do I need a driver to use the Pinnacle card for Avid in my new computer?
If so, any ideas how I can get the card to work?
Where can I find a driver?
Do I need to get an entirely different capture card?

Urgent problem exporting from timeline...'media offline'

Please help someone!

I am unable to export my finished sequence as all the media files in my Bin appear to be offline! This is weird as I can play the finished sequence and have, thank goodness, been able to do a digital cut onto tape from which I have burned a dvd for a deadline tomorrow!

When I click on 'Bin' - 'Show Offline Media', it highlights all my sequences which I duplicated for safety during this two-week long edit and one freeze frame effect. All the other media clips are clear.

When I tried to export the final master from the timeline as a QTmov a warning appears saying Exception: parameter error. This export format may require audio or video tracks". but all the tracks are enabled.

I have imported the film as a new project from tape but this one won't export either and the same message appears.

Any help gratefully received!

Trying to import WMV converted to an AVI

Hi,

I am trying to import a file of a video screen capture with audio commentary from a website supplied to me by the site owner as a WMV. I know Avid doesn't import WMV so have used a free download to convert it into an AVI.

But when I import it into my Avid, it appears as a 'Matte Key (with alpa)' in the Bin and the clip is just black.

Any tips gratefully received.

PS: I have also tried converting the WMV into a QT which when imported has appeared as a clip in the bin that I can work with but I'm not happy with the quality, it looks very soft in the window.

Problem with Audio Card on Avid Xpress DV ver 4.8 (PC)

I recently had to junk my old computer and transfer my Avid Xpress DV system to a new computer - an Asus system running Windows XP Pro with 250 GB HDD and 2GB RAM.

Everything is working perfectly except that the Avid says it cannot detect any audio cards on my new system. The audio card program (SoundMax) from my previous computer was downloaded along with everything else.

There is also a VIA HD Audio card which came with the computer. I think VIA cards are incompatible with Avid - am I right?

Do I need to instal a new audio card to get the sound working again?

Any advice would be helpfiul

Audio Sync issue

Whenever I play the timeline, or even just a clip, the video and audio will stay in sync for about 20 seconds then jump out of sync. After another 20 seconds or so, it will jump back into sync, and then back out again, and then back in again... and on and on.

I've had this problem for a long time and have just been working around it by exporting my productions and burning them straight to DVD. It really would be nice to start recording them to tape again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Rendering Picture in Picture Effect error

i'm having trouble rendering my demo reel's picture in picutre effects. I have tried rendering the effects on my computer off of my external hd and also off of a works computer and no dice.

When I try to render I recieve this message: "Assertion failed: FALSE File:\coresw\ame\src\Consumers\Devices\SWCodecMgrlnt.cpp, Line: 4101"

Could someone please help me render!!! I need this demo reel finnished for my website. Any advice would be well appreciated ;-D

i am running windows 7. 7100

8800gts 640mb

amd 64 athlon X2

2gigs ram

2 hard dives that have 250 gigs of space. I just reformatted so i have plenty of space!

I tried both marking an in and out position and rendering in/out position, and individually clicking the render icon. I have tried to render to all drives of the computer.

I split the screen into quarters with each playing a piece I have completed. Throughout the demo reel, I have each quarter of the screen key out to go full screen. I thought that was going to be my biggest problem, but it turns out I can't do anything without figuring out this rendering issue =-{

Trouble creating picture in picture effect

I need to do an effect bringing a video image out of the background to a box effect. I end up with black screen in box instead of video image I desire. I'm not sure why Avid won't let me do the picture in picture effect, but it won't.

I can superimpose two images by putting them on seperate video lines, but can't seem to get the picture in picture effect by putting the two video images on two seperate video lines. Any ideas? One Avid editor I spoke with said the video quality icon at the botom left of the timeline should be all green, but I can only get it to be half green/half yellow, or all yellow.

I'm using Avid 4.1. I tried to upgrade to 4.8, but had other editing problems and had to uninstall 4.8 and go back to 4.1.

Export as Quicktime Movie -2GB file size limit

Export as Quicktime Movie gives me the best (compared to Quicktime Reference) and acceptable results when burnt to DVD, but the films I have are much larger than 2 GB. When I try export longer films I get:

"Error exporting file to disk. The file can not be created because it would exceed the two gigabyte file size limit. Export a shorter duration or change your export settings".

How can I avoid this problem? Can I avoid this problem in Avid or shall I export the film in segments and use a program to join them together before I encode to Mpeg2? Is there such a program? Or shall I solve it some other way? (The background is this: I have had problems with blockage in dark areas of the DVD when I use qtref export and this blockage disappears when I burn a qtmov file).

Lost everything but the effects!

I finished a job and wanted to consolidate. The original job files were on "K" and I wanted to consolidate to "L"....

Prior to consolidating I looked in media tool because there were a number media icons that popped up when I clicked “select unrendered titles.” I wanted to see if those particular pieces of media went to the new drive on consolidation. If they did not - then I would assume I could delete them from the original drive.

When I consolidated I sent media from k-L and told it to link to original drive.

After consolidating I opened the media tool and sorted by drive.

Again I clicked “select unrendered titles” and only media in the original drive (K) was highlighted. Nothing in the drive I had consolidated to – the L drive, was highlighted.

So I deleted the highlighted “unrendered titles” in the K drive.

Went to my timeline, the sequence is linking NOT how I told it but with the target drive. And every piece of media (audio & video) is gone in both drives . In the media tool it only shows any media with an effect on it.

I'm glad the job is over and I had at least made a bu dvd & tape but I wanted to save the actual files.

What did I do wrong???

I actully have the clips and audio in another bu place so I guess I could individually import them (all clips are stills) back into the timeline.

Here is what is going on. I did a dub for BetaSP to MinDV ( I've done this many time with no problems and every thing looks crisp ) the video out of the Beta deck looks good the monitor out on my MinDV deck looks good. But when I got to digetiz it the color drops out and it looks B/W. But my monitor on my deck looks good.

I troubleshoot this bu using anther tape that tape was okay on it's out put. Than I teste recording again but something diffrent every thing is okay.

I just don't unerstand it is just these clips that I dubed that look this way.

There are a few other things I have yet to try.

Any thought?
