Hello and help, please!

I am running avid xpress pro v5.7 on macbook pro, mac os 10.4.11.

I captured probably 7 hours of footage to a project on new G raid 1 Tb drive, partitioned into 6 drives. I made about 7 sequences, before I started having the problem that now I work and after 5-20 minutes, at some point when I click on a clip in a bin to put it in the monitor, i get the spinning wheel, and have to force quit the program. I usually have to force quit the program a number of times- it finally disappears from the screen- but still appears open in the dock (with an arrow next to it.) I can't open the program again, must shut down the computer, and even that process does not complete itself. All the programs close, but it freezes on an empty desktop and I have to force quit the program by holding down the power.

I can restart and work for a little bit, but the problem repeats. I opened a new project and copied some of the files and it worked fine for one night, and then it just happened again when I tried to keep working. I have a lot of unrendered color effects on the sequences, could that do it?

Any suggestions??

moving media PC MC to Mac Xpress pro

Hi All

Can anuone outline or point me to an article otr thread which specifically details the moving of media from a PC media composer to a Mac Xpress pro. What is confusing me is the mxf vs omf files. I formatted fat 32 to copy the files from the PC drive and plugged into may mac but no relink.

3 important question. 1. can i drop these files into an omfi folder 2. Is it only on of these structured folders per partition. 3 is it possible to do ?

Any help would be appreciated

I have been working with Avid Xpress 5.5 (academic version) for a year now on my PC desktop/ Windows. The installer guide said that the program would work with both Windows and Mac.

On my new MacbookPro (MA896LL/A 15", 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAMI can install the program but the system won't recognize the dongle. I have tried several times to reinstall and I have always copied my original DBhelper.exf file into the utilities/dongle dumper file and ran the dongle updater.

The system won't accept the dongle. Error message: there is no dongle connected to the system. Since this is an academic version, I cannot upgrade it - as far as I know.

Hey all,
Iam having some problems trying to get Deck Control.
-I have everything connected from the Deck to my Deck Control Switcher.
-Out from the Switcher, I have a 9pin to Serial wire.
-The Serial part is being plugged into a USB/SERIAL converter.
-The USB is being plugged into the Front of the Computer.

Iam running:

SDI Mojo
Dual 2.7 Ghz PowerPC G5
10.4.11
4 GB DDR SDRAM

Does anyone have issues with control?

Zooming a graphic and Exporting .AIF and .WAV

I have two questions:

1) I have loaded a .jpeg into a sequence. I would it to slowly enlarge. Dissolve in, zoom in, dissolve out. This seems simple, but when I manipulate the Avid Zoom effect's Size/Zoom Factor control, nothing happens. I have tried to add keframes, still nothing. It seems the program wants to do it but is not. There is aomething simple I am missing. What is it?

2) My colleague in audio wants Quicktime movies with two tracks of audio in the .AIF format or the .WAV format. I cannot find these selections on the Exporting choices. Am I doing something wrong? Is it possible for me to export .AIF and >WAV? He is using Pro Tools.

I am using Xpress Pro 4.6.

How to put two clips in non-standard aspect ratio

Hi there,

i'm new to the avid although I've done some editing before on FCP. Because of weird bureaucratic factors I am editing on a Mac running 10.2.6 with 1.25 G memory using Avid XPress 6.1.1.

I've looked through the avid help files and I've looked at the FAQ here (the link to the archive search is broken btw) and can't find how to do this thing that I'm trying to do.

I'm making a thing in Flash which requires two snippets of video to run one above the other. Currently I have them as separate flv files but there are some advantages to having them in the one flv of a non-standard aspect ratio. Talking it over with our gurus here the deal seems to be to arrange the two clips on top of each other and then export the sequence, then compress to flv using a separate program. I'd take out the extra black at that stage. So like this:

Would anyone know how to do this? If you could point me to a link or give a brief description I'd really appreciate it.

"Export Audio Too Large"

I have an HDV project imported native (1080i). These are all day conferences and the sequences run 4-5 hrs. When I export to h.264 (960 x 540) I am getting the error/exception message above (export audio too large.) Seems there is a length limit to the audio. If I export video only, fine. If I break up the exports into sections I have no problems outputting about 2-1/4 at a time.

It's not a drive space issue. I'm exporting with about 1TB available and the files end up to be approx. 1GB per hour.

Any advice?

I am on a dual G5, 2.0GB, OS 10.4.11, xpress pro 5.6.4.

Download Goodies - how to install plug-ins?

My appologies if it's posted somewhere... since the forum change I find it more difficult to search for answers.

In the download package (4.8.1 and now 4.8.2) there is the folder "Goodies". I unpacked the included plugins and put them in the Avid plug-ins folder. The effects don't show in the effect window, though. How are they supposed to be installed? There are no directions in the Read Me file. Also, should they have the extension "avx" or the one they seem to have when upacked "bundle"? And what's the difference between the two folders that Avid creates on install for its plug-ins? I have AVX_Plug-Ins and AVX2_Plug-Ins.

Transfer projects with media files from mac to mac using ethernet

¿Is there an easy way to transfer complete projects (with its media files) to another workstation via Ethernet?

In my work we have 4 Avid Xpress Pro (4.6 ver) Mac workstations with different types of projects, all in-line through ethernet. Normally when we start a project we try finish it in the same workstation, but there are times when we need to pass a complete project, with its media files, to another Mac. But when we "pass" the project folder and we open it in the "new" workstation the project appears "MEDIA OFFLINE". I have the knowledge that we also need to pass the "OMFI folder" in order to be able to reconnect the media, but since we have alot of information from other projects we can't transfer the whole OMFI folder in to the new workstation, besides I've tried it with no success. So, I'm asking for any one's help, who can show me how can I do it. I know it's possible because I saw somebody do it before, but he wouldn't teach me, and I haven't found any tutorial that explains it clearly.

URGENT - Uncompressed 8bit Export Setting

Hi,

This is really urgent, so I appreciate prompt replies. I'm trying to export a 2 hour cut as a quicktime from Avid Xpress Pro for a post production house to load into their avid. They've asked me to export as an Uncompressed 8bit 4:2:2 file. I have two Avid XPress Pro systems in my office, both v5.8.4 and one has this setting in the Export settings and one does not. Of course the system that I need to export from does not have the setting. Any suggestions on how to move the setting from one machine to the other or find it on the machine I need it? Thanks. I have to do this tonight so any help is great!

i finally broke down and purchased the 8 core mac and oh boy i am MORE than pleased. anyhowz i'm trying to upgrade my Avid Express Pro (Mojo) V4.8.4 to the MC 4.0 software and cannot find a link to purchase a downloadable upgrade. is the upgrade available as a download or is it only a box set update?

I also assume there will need to be a dongle upgrade?

in the past BLKDOG and Marianna have been quick to respond so i'll thank you ahead of time should that be the case once again.

Moving a project from Composer to Xpress Pro

I'm trying to move a project from Avid Composer on a PC unity system to a Mac-based Xpress Pro system with an attached single disk.

I got the project and media copied from the UNity System onto a USB 2.0 Drive - the project will open in Xpress but I can't relink the media to that on the drive. A friend suggested copying the media out of the Unity file structure and putting it all in the MXF/1 file structure of Xpress Pro and although XP now seems to scan the media and find the files (it quarantines about half of them now saying they're 'not MXF' - which they're not - they're OMF but it lets lots of OMF files through. I've tried trashing the media database files etc but so far no sign of media linking up to the project anyone got any ideas?

I'm using Avid Xpress Pro 5.8.4 on a MacBook 2.33GHz Intel Core Duo 2GB Memory and a 1TB external USB drive.

XP 5.8.4 crashes on consolidate/playback

Hi all

I have a client working on a feature-length project with a large amount of media and attached drives (11 Firewire drives connected to a PowerMac G4 on 10.4.11, using FW800 PCI expansion cards). The system is pretty overloaded in terms of RAM, CPU capability and I/O, but at the moment they don't have the ability to do any upgrades.

One of their issues is frequent crashing of Xpress Pro, especially when consolidating media between drives or playing back a sequence. Their application is 5.8.4 and Quicktime version is 7.1.6. They also have a Mojo directly attached to the Firewire bus.

There's nothing obvious in the Avid log that speaks to me; I enclose the last few crash items in case anyone has the time and inclination to look at them and might have any insight. In every case, the crash log begins

Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)

Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000000

Would it be a sensible troubleshooting step to delete precomputes, perhaps?

Digital Cut errors - black burst needed?

I know this question has been asked in various ways but I can't find my specific scenario...

I'm on an Avid Xpress Pro (5.8.3) with a Mojo SDI. I am getting errors every time I try to make a digital cut of my 90 minute sequence. Somewhere along the way it invariably stops and gives me some sort of video error (sorry I don't have it in front of me now to write exactly the error I'm getting.)

The material is digitized at DV25. I'm going out to my Sony HVR-1500 deck to a DVCam tape and I'm bringing both the audio and video out over SDI.

My question is - would a black burst generator help with this problem? I currently do not have one but am happy to buy one if it would help. If so - any recs on brand to buy? And do I just feed one output from the generator into my deck ref in and connect another to the Mojo's black "REF world clock" cable?

avid exception: unsupported resolution

hello, I have installed Avid 5.7 academic on my mac book pro.

Configuration: 3 GB RAM, 160 GB HD, 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, ATI Radeon X1600 256 MB, LCD 1440 x 900 display. The config of the computer matches the Avid requirements to my knowledge.

At login I get 2 error messages:
#1 -->"An error occured reading the Database file for the directory 'Macintosh HD:Applications:Avid Xpress Pro:SupportingFiles:Avid_MediaFiles'. Exception: 'omfiHPDomain_INIT_FAILED'
The Database file 'msmMMOB.mmdb' may be corrupted."
#2-->"Media will be unavailable in the media directory: Macintosh HD:Applications:Avid Xpress Pro:SupportingFiles:Avid_MediaFiles"

Then when I open my Avid Project (saved from the school's Avid 5.1 HD Pro previous version, on Windows) I get an "UNSUPPORTED RESOLUTION" exception error.

At first, I didn't even get an image in the composer window. When I go into effects editing mode, I do get an image now, but still get the error message and cannot scroll nor play the clip.
Meanwhile, I can play clips from my scenes bin without any probem. It affects only the sequences from the timeline.

After reading other posts, I've tried deleting the msmMMOB.mdb file from the Avid_supporting files on the internal drive and the msmFMID.pmr / msmMMOB.mdb files from the OMFI folder on the external drive. It didn't work.
i've also reinstalled and still not working.

I am cluless to what I should do, please help me, it's been more than a month I am trying to run Avid on my macbook, it's starting to get old...I've had to upgrade to the 5.7 version to get the dongle to work, now that this is fixed, I still can run my Avid...
What does the exception error means and why are these files corrupted???

constant crash of XPpro/no unistalling option

Just finished editing a project for big client of us on Xpress pro 5.8 on our powermac, mac os x 10.5.7.

We had in mind to quickly output for DVD (deadline is very very soon), but unfortunately AVID crashed.

After a reboot of AVID I can choose a project again, get the messag that 'the OHCI port is busy..'(is happening all the time so nothing special), but when AVID opens any project it stops, crashes. A total reboot didn't work, and a few other things didn't either.

i've got avid express pro (with mojo dna) V4.8.4 running on a G5 desk top. i so desperately want to upgrade my avid software however in today's cash strapped economy find it incredibly difficult to toss out 3200 (plus tax and apple care) for the new 8 core. are there any plans to certify/test the new quads? is there any version of avid software that i may be able to upgrade to with the new mac pro quad? it's such a bummer to be stuck in a place where i cannot upgrade with the cheaper quad.

Does Mojo always output audio at -10dB?

I have been trying to connect my Mojo, via a balancing transformer (electronic type), to an XLR connected Peak Program Meter (PPM).

Knowing that Avid specify the output level of the Mojo as -10dB, the transformer was set-up 'on the bench' (using a Lindos), with an -18dB Reference Tone, to register 4 on the PPM, or 0dB (PAL standard).

Unfortunately, the only way I could make PPM 4 when connected to my Mojo, with Ref. Tone at -18dB, was to boost the Output Gain in Xpress by +6dB.

Therefore, by my reckoning this means that the Mojo is outputting at -16dB.

Has anyone else had a similar low-output problem, or am I missing something - which I frequently do?

If it is a problem with the Mojo is it fixable, is there an internal adjustment, or what?

All suggestions welcomed.

Hello everyone,

I am hoping that someone out there can help me with an issue I have been having with Avid Xpress Pro on the Mac.

My co-workers and I had decided that instead of having two separate partitions on our Powermac G5 editing system - one devoted strictly to Avid and the other to Final Cut Pro - we would remove the Final Cut Pro partition to give Avid 10 extra hours of capture space on our internal 150 GB hard drive. No one really used Final Cut Pro on those system as we deal primarily with Avid anyway - over the summer I had partitioned the drive thinking that perhaps people would use FCP but no the case.

With that said, yesterday I began the process using the Mac OS X Leopard Boot disc and the Disk Utility to delete the Final Cut Pro partition and resize the Avid one to fill up the whole drive. UNFORTUNATELY, in the process, I accidentally deleted the Avid partition in Disk Utility - oops, big mistake. Now, we DID have a backup of the disk image, albeit a month old, that I promptly restored to the hard drive. So it boots up now fine, Avid is installed fine, etc.

HOWEVER, I did try to recover the latest versions of the project files by using Data Rescue II to see if I could get back the project files, as our image was a month old and didn't contain the project files themselves. As the hard drive was not written too excessively, it found 100% of the project files located under /Users/Shared/Shared AvidProjects/ etc. I restored them and THEN copied them to the same exact location once I had restored the disk image on the mac.

I should also mention that all MXF files are stored on a separate internal drive, so the media itself is 100% intact. I should also mention that I have no clue what the OMFI folders are stored on the computer, apparently in the root drive, that contain files such as .mdb and the Creating folder.

However, NOW whenever I try to open a project file in Avid under Shared the message comes up that it is

Unable to open "project name"
File does not contain a valid Avid domain header

I looked online and it appeared that some people said the project file was corrupted - however Data Rescue II said it was all intact and it appears 100% fine, which is odd. I know that the files were essentially trashed when I accidently erased the Avid partition, however it is odd it won't open. Do I have to use a repair utility? I also tried opening the bins from the Avid Attic and it still gave the same message.

If anyone could help me out with this it would be GREATLY appreciated as I have all the media and the restored project files, just no way of opening them which is frustrating. I am willing to do whatever it takes to open them. Thank you!

INIT_FAILED error, resulting in P2 audio import failure

While importing P2 material from a Firewire drive, I've been receiving the following two error messages, in tandem, but please read the sequence of events below, because I've seen other discussions about these error messages on this forum, but none of them quite match the situation I'm in.

Error Message #1: "An error occurred reading the Database file for the directory "...CONTENTS:AudioException:'omfiHPDomain_INIT_FAILED'."

Error Message #2: "The Database file msmMOB.mdb may be corrupted."

Now, these are the circumstances under which it began happening:

I received a drive from our cameraman containing five folders, labeled "Card 1" through "Card 5," representing P2 cards he shot over the weekend.

Using the File>Import P2>Clips to Bin function, I "soft imported" (not the official term, I know) the material from the first folder so that the director and I could watch and take notes, etc., before going through the more time consuming process of transcoding. This worked fine for the folders "Card 1" through "Card 3."

During the import of clips from "Card 4," I received the messages above. Although Avid successfully imported video and correctly gave me four audio channels per clip, the audio media showed to be offline. This then happened with "Card 5."

After the standard routine of restarting, deleting media databases (since I wasn't transcoding the material, the Avid was not likely referencing my Media Database anyway), etc. I found that I would now get this message while attempting to import any P2 media, including:

A) The folders "Card 1" through "Card 3," which I had successfully imported and viewed only just minutes before.

B) P2 material from a previous shoot, on that same Firewire drive.

C) Copies of that previous shoot that I had transferred to a separate Firewire drive.

The errors occur regardless of which drive I have specified as my media creation drive (not that I was creating media) or what drives I have mounted or offline.

In summary: without a moment's notice or anything unusal happening, my Avid went from being able to successfully import P2 material, to importing only video -- no audio -- and issuing the above error messages in the attempt.

Any help will be appreciated.

I just loaded up XPress Pro 4.8 and am wondering if I can have two sets of buttons in the source and record monitor sections? If I can, I'm unable to loacate the setting to do so?
