I have tried searching for this but didn't really know what exactly it was called so apologies if this is a really stupid question.

When I open Avid everything is a separate window, the timeline, the viewing window etc etc. This drives me insane as I can see my desktop peeking through the holes and it's really distracting. It used to open in one whole window, and if i wanted to minimise it I could do so with one click, not multiple clicks as I have to do now.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

WEIRD! Sapphire FX track is now locked.

So, I am working on MC 6.0.1.1 on a PC

I have a title I created with Title Tool.

I stepped into the title and added S_Shake Sapphire plug-in effect. I messed around with the settings.

I also added a Resize effect.

So, if I step into the title on V1, I see three sub-tracks:

1.1 has nothing

1.2 has "myTitle v1"

1.3 has "myTitle v2"

Now here's the weird part. Yesterday I could click on either the S_Shake or the Resize effects, pull up the Effect Editor, adjust the parameters, etc.

Today, the 1.3 layer is locked somehow. If I bring up the effect editor, the only effects listed are Title and Resize.

I can see the S_Shake icon, and I can see the results of the effect when I press play. But I can no longer edit that effect, nor can I delete it.

Any idea what's going on here?

Weird timeline and bin behavior

I am having 2 problems in 5.8.4 that I never had before.

If I load a sequence in the Record monitor, then toggle to the Source timeline, then toggle back to the Record timeline, then load a new sequence into the Record monitor, the Record timeline title bar displays the name of the previous sequence that was in the Record monitor instead of the one that is currently loaded. As in "Timeline - Sequence A", when in fact Sequence B is in the Record monitor. The timeline itself is correct, i.e. it's Sequence B's timeline -- but it's got the wrong name. This may seem trivial, but it's confusing me right now because I am switching between several different sequences with similar (but not the same) names and similar looking timelines. What is even weirder is that I opened an old project, then closed it, then opened my current project, and the timeline title bar showed the name of the sequence in the Record monitor from the project that I just closed.

This project is a PAL 25i project ... (I don't know whether that has anything to do with it).

The other problem is that some of my bins, which are always open, have their icons showing as closed in the Project Window. What these bins have in common is foreign language accents in their titles, in this case the German umlaut. When I think one of them is closed (because it's hidden behind other bins) and I double click on the icon in the Project Window, I get a message that says e.g. "Unable to open file 'JÖRG SELECTS'. Exception: A copy named "JÖRG SELECTS" is already open." When I get rid of the umlaut in the bins' titles, the problem goes away.

Anyone else have these same problems?

Thanks,

It seems to
be a very far-along cut, with text and transitions, and like they had a
very detailed organization system in terms of bins.

According to the producer, the project is:
AVID XPRESS PRO 4.64, 30 fps, 48 khz 24 bit audio

And there are some new dailies at DV Cam continuous 29.97 w/ Timecode that need to be loaded, etc.

I thought I'd get some feedback here. And if anyone has
any recommended tutorials, that would be great.

My initial questions are:
- What version of MC to go with - 6 or 6.5? Or 5.5?
- What is the best approach/process to relaunch this project? Create a new project and import the bins?

- What are the pitfalls to look out for?

- Any dos and don'ts? Any other thoughts?

- Does it matter if it's coming from a PC or a Mac and going to a PC or Mac?

Thank you!

Rebuilding Directories

I have an issue with a Apple version of Xpress 4.6.

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, I couldn't find it...

I've got a whole bunch of still images that I've AMA-linked. I'm now trying to transcode them. However, transcode times are around fifty minutes per 30 second file. Is this normal? I've transcoded AMA from RED in the past, which took a while, but nothing like this.

The pics are rather large - 5616 × 3744 pixels. I've tried DNX36 & 185, but changing the end format doesn't seem to make much difference.

The config of the computer matches the Avid requirements to my knowledge.

At login I get 2 error messages:
#1 -->"An error occured reading the Database file for the directory 'Macintosh HD:Applications:Avid Xpress Pro:SupportingFiles:Avid_MediaFiles'. When I go into effects editing mode, I do get an image now, but still get the error message and cannot scroll nor play the clip.
Meanwhile, I can play clips from my scenes bin without any probem. It affects only the sequences from the timeline.

After reading other posts, I've tried deleting the msmMMOB.mdb file from the Avid_supporting files on the internal drive and the msmFMID.pmr / msmMMOB.mdb files from the OMFI folder on the external drive. It didn't work.
i've also reinstalled and still not working.

I am cluless to what I should do, please help me, it's been more than a month I am trying to run Avid on my macbook, it's starting to get old...I've had to upgrade to the 5.7 version to get the dongle to work, now that this is fixed, I still can run my Avid...
What does the exception error means and why are these files corrupted???
Thanks for your help, I would truly appreciate!
-Aurelie.

calculating disk space required for consolidation etc

Is there a simple way to calculate how much disk space is required to consolidate/transcode a sequence?

The space required is going to depend on a lot of factors isn't it - like overall length, number of tracks, how many cuts, length of handles, downressed or not, etc. Presumably Avid can estimate space required in an instant so why isn't it displayed in the consolidate window so one can allocate an appropriate drive?

Capture errors due to update on Xpress v5.8

In the past I have successfully digitized with my Avid Mojo & Sony DSR-40 DV cam deck hooked up to the same slots, same computer, same usb deck control, and same hard drives all while using Avid Xpress Pro v. 4.8.4 and an older OS. The problem I am having after updating my Avid to v.5.8 with OS 10.4.11 is the following:

1) I can’t capture Dv Cam video with Mojo plugged in. I get the error
“Exception: Capture aborted due to discontinuity in time code”

2) Even with Mojo unplugged, and deck hooked through firewire to G5 native slot still problematic. I am able to actually capture this time, but only for about 45 seconds then it stops and starts up again creating a new clip every 1 minute or so.

Details on everything I have tried below:

I’m on a Mac Quad core running OS 10.4.11 ....I just upgraded my Avid Xpress Pro w/ Mojo from v4.8.4 to v5.8. I followed all the install instructions, updated firmware on Mojo, updated dongle. I even had an Avid tech walk me through all the appropriate steps just to insure it was installed correctly.

I started it up and had the firmware update, then had the power cycle restart, then finally got into Avid v 5.8. I hooked up a Sony DSR-40 Deck using my Keyspan usb deck control switch. The deck was hooked up through firewire on a separate firewire capture port (separate from the Avid). I have yet to try hooking the deck into my Mojo using a dv 6pin to 6pin simply because I don’t have one of those cables, and I had it working this way in the past. My Avid Mojo is hooked up to the back port on my G5 (the native firewire card to the G5). The deck is on a separate firewire card I purchased (approved by Avid). The deck is recognized and I have playback, but no audio or video is seen or heard. When I try to capture it says: “Exception: Audio/video is unexpectedly no longer coming into the system.” I made sure that DNA is showing up on the timeline and audio and video in the capture tool were set to DNA-1394. I also tried shut downs, switching the Mojo to the front firewire port....No luck.

Next, I tried quiting, unhooking the Mojo, and hooking the deck firewire into the native Mac G5 port. I started up Avid. I switched the audio video settings to 1394, toggled DNA off to 1394 too. If I randomly caputure while playing it reads: “Exception: Capture aborted due to discontinuity in time code” if I pause and then hit the capture button it then captures for 1 minute then stops, then re-captures creating a new clip, on and on leaving me with a bunch of 1 minute clips that actually play back fine. Now it’s not always 1 minute long and I checked to make sure this wasn’t some setting. It is set up to capture clips as long as 60 minutes. I also tried this in my other firewire port....same results.

Another error I seem to get with the Mojo is on initial start up, it always has me power cycle. Then it is fine for as long as the computer is on. Once I shut down and start up Avid again....yup power cycle fun. This is a minor issue compared to the capture one above, just figured I’d mention it just in case.

I need to capture some DV cam quickly. Any help. I’m so sorry I ever updated :(

Workspaces

ok... i have tried to figure this one out and i am compleatly confused.

I have just upgraded it to snow leopard, and now xpress won't open.
Does Xpress pro not work on snow leopard? If not what do I do? Can I buy an upgrade to MC if I supply relevant details? Or does it mean I have to spend a load more money on software?

Also I own MC on another mac. Can I buy a new dongle and additional licence off avid, and install that instead?
