Gentlemen, Thank you for this research regarding the Avid tutorial (to use in conjunction with points Douglas covers).

One of the contributors (can't remember who) to MC forums has the tagline " If I had two hours to chop down a tree I would spend 1.5 hours sharpening my ax."

In my case I fluctuate between "reading the instruction manual" (sharpening the ax) and just diving in (when I get tired "reading" and want to just get on with editing). Editing is not my "day job" so have to allocate time. Regards, Dennis

I just checked on the office system that is running just now.
On that one I have Sonic DVDitProHD (so not really exactly the same)and the User guide in the documentation is for 2009.

When I have my other system up and running, later today, I'll check out the AvidDVD user guide date.

Either way, I am not surprised that there is a variety of ages in User Guides floating around. Sonic have never been very great at updating their user guides . . . . . . . . actually Avid does not have a very good track record in that area either.

If I find that the AvidDVD one is newer, I'll contact Dennis directly.

Thanks for pointing out the date differences that you are seeing.

What "latest" tutorial PDF are you referring to?

The document is from 2005.

There is, for example, no mention of Blu-Ray output.

I saw quite a lot of differences between the latest version and this one.

However, it may still be useful as the core of the application has not changed very much over the years.

Scott, thank you for info--I actually did find the document you sent link for when I finally Googled Avid DVD Tutorials. "Your" linked document came up published by Pinnacle back in the day. Quick look through it showed some differences vs newer document but they are probably minor. Regards, Dennis

I remember running into this myself some time ago. Yes, that document is password protected and everything is disallowed. You can find this on the Security tab of the Properties window (File menu).

I'll see if I can get this fixed.

Thanks Pat. It does act like it is protected. However, since none of the other Avid PDF's including User Guide for Avid DVD that I have looked at have been protected I was thinking there was some "trick" needed to print the the thing. Very minor thing, but was annoying me. In meantime I just printed relevent sections from the Avid DVD Users Guide. I think I have learned enough now to experiment with authoring my first Blu-Ray in Avid DVD.

PDFs can be protected and that can include restricting copy as well as print.

Sounds like it's protected.

This is low priority help, but it is bugging me. I opened Avid DVD Documentation PDF file for the "tutorial" and I tried to print sections of it--for easy reference as I try authoring DVD and Blu-Ray. However, "Print" option is grayed out and when I persist I get note "this operation is not permitted." This is first time I have had this problem with any PDF "instruction" file and in this case the Avid DVD User Guide can be printed. I usually have my editing computer disconnected from internet in most cases (turn off WIN security in case it could interfere with MC) but just in case I needed to be online to print I plugged in to internet, but still could not print. Is there some unique trick I am missing to print the Avid DVD Tutorial PDF?
