Media Composer 4.0 introduces major new features which we will demonstrate and answer questions about. These include:

· Mix and match frame rates, formats and resolutions in the same timeline

· Instantly access and edit GFCAM 100 Mb-formatted media through AMA

· Create low-res proxies of archived HD 720p media for faster reviewing and retrieval

· Encode and deliver final masters in Panasonic AVC-Intra format

· Be more creative and productive with new updates to the included Production Suite

· Capture and preserve ancillary and captioning data on Nitris DX and Mojo DX systems

· View stereoscopic material side-by-side for a more natural line of sight

· Get more monitor choices for viewing stereoscopic media

The next meeting of the Los Angeles Final Cut Pro User Group (lafcpug) will be Wednesday, November 18, 2009 beginning at 6:45PM - till we drop at the Gallery Theatre in Hollywood Ca.

The perception, (especially among FCP users) is that Final Cut Pro is slowly but surely taking over the post industry. While that maybe true in the "Indy" world, the reality is the Avid Media Composer is still firmly entrenched in Hollywood feature films and broadcast television. In order for you to compete in Hollywood it's important to know BOTH tools.

So lafcpug will devote the entire evening to the Avid/FCP 2-step.

What are the big differences between the Avid MC and FCP?
Is it hard to learn the Avid if I know just FCP?
Do I really need to learn the Avid?
And other FAQs

Join us as legendary film and sound editor Walter Murch returns to lafcpug to discuss "what is it like going from the Avid to FCP and back to the Avid." Mr. Murch will bring along his assistant editors Greg Thompson and Dave Cory for an assistant editor POV.

Also editor Steve Cohen will show us what is new in the Avid Media Composer 4.0.

Shane Ross will show off the new Mix & Match capability in MC4.0 which allows you to combine different formats, frame rates, and resolutions all in the same timeline.

BUFFALO
The Next WNYPPG Group meeting is next Thursday night, November 12 at WNED 6pm-9pm. The topics on the agenda are:
1. WNYPPG update
2. Avid News and a look at Avid's new Media Composer updates (version 4.0.3 on a Mac)
3. Open Discussion on all post-production trends (Avid, Final Cut, Adobe, Audio, tapeless formats, etc.)
4. "DVD Production for Producers" -- a presentation with Brian Kreib. A must for Producers and any one who is not familiar with the process taking your show from completion to finished DVD.

ROCHESTER
For those who came out to the last meeting a couple weeks ago in Rochester, we hope you had a great time. It was an excellent turn-out! We had great round table discussions with Adam Kranitz from Avid (thanks so much Adam!); we discussed methods of designing video elements for and delivering to the internet; and we had a wonderfully detailed walk-through by Andrew Croucher of WXXI of the process by which audio runs through the Pro-Tools environment.

Many thanks to WXXI's Fran Lipani, Joanne Gordon and the rest of the WXXI staff for helping us to host our first Rochester event. Then next Rochester meeting will be some time in February, and possibly held at Monroe Community College. We are planning on having presentations on:
1. After Effects
2. Editing Workflows
(Final agenda will be determined as we get closer to the date.)

For that meeting we ask you bring $10.00. for a membership fee. That enrolls you for an entire year of membership and basically covers our cost of the food and maintaining the website.

SYRACUSE:

It is on our agenda to begin these user group meetings in Syracuse. Our first approach will be to their PBS station to host it. If you have any alternative ideas, please reply this post.

7:00 - 8:00pm | Apple Color Commercial Workflow: For projects originating in Avid, grading in Apple Color and finishing in Autodesk Flame

Alex Bickel will take through the workflow for a commercial project, from ingest to output, and talk about the challenges, solutions and reasons for moving a project across multiple platforms. Using the latest ad campaign for the NYSE as a case study, he will share pro workflow tips to make sure your next conform and finish go smoothly. Finally, he'll take us through a few grades in color, demonstrating how he approaches a scene during a session, dissecting the frame into pieces to tell a stronger story through color.

ABOUT ALEX BICKEL:
Colorist Alex Bickel brings incredible creative insight and sensitivity to light and color for all of his projects. Alex’s credits include commercial projects for Jaguar, Old Navy, NYSE, Hyatt, Schwab, and the Atlantic Weekly, to name a few. He won the 2008 Hollywood Post Alliance award for outstanding color grading in a commercial for his work on the Jaguar XF campaign. He has also graded several independent feature films including the 2008 Independent Spirit Award nominee Quiet City. He currently heads up the Color department for Outside Editorial in Soho, NYC.

Hello everyone! It's Chris Bové from WNYPPG -- Avid's users group for Buffalo/Rochester/Syracuse.

The first-ever implementation of our group in Rochester will be held at WXXI on Thursday October 15th at 6pm. For those of you not familiar with our meetings, we are a casual group of professionals/enthusiasts who get together about every three months or so to discuss postproduction topics and share workflows. We are officially endorsed by Avid - less as a means of selling Avid products and more as a grassroots method for Avid to learn the needs and desires of actual users. Paying for user group logistics?

Hi all,

I've been trying to figure out how to get a London, UK user group going, but Avid UK doesn't have any money to support one.

For those of you who are running user groups regularly, how are you paying for facilities, support, etc.? Are different Avid regions supporting user groups based on their individual budget & desire to help, or are you finding sponsorship, or are members donating, or what?

Here are the confirmed details for the Charlotte User Group meeting:
Saturday, June 20th, from 10am-3pm, at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College's south campus in Concord, NC, Room 204, just past the lobby of the main entrance. The campus is just west of I-85, exit 55. Lunch on your own 12-1. Coffee, donuts, and bottled water provided.

8:00 - 9:00pm | FCP to Avid Workflow with Chris Fournelle
With the advent of a very mature NLE marketplace, it is no longer certain that an edit will proceed from offline to online with the same non-linear platform. Chris Fournelle, Post Production Director at FRONTLINE's OutPost finishing facility, presents their workflow for Boogie Man: The Lee Atwater Story. This Final Cut Pro project with file-based 24p acquisition, tape-based 30i stock footage, and FCP based graphics was finished at OutPost in an Avid online environment on a short turnaround. Chris will talk about the methods they used and some of the lessons learned in the process.

Chris Fournelle is the Post Production Director for the PBS weekly public affairs documentary series, FRONTLINE, based at WGBH in Boston, Massachusetts. Chris oversees the day to day post operations for FRONTLINE and manages Outpost's facility operations and their finishing services for a diverse client base that delivers programming to PBS and other major distribution networks.

Moderated Panel Discussion on What They Saw (and Didn't See!) at NAB 2009 Back by popular demand, the "6th Annual Editors' Lounge NAB Discussion Panel" has transformed from a Pre-NAB Fortunetelling Session into a Post-NAB Play-by-Play Analysis and "Post" Mortem.

This always-entertaining-and-informative panel will feature the usual suspects: Lucas Wilson (guru of D.I., RED and other post-solutions), Mark Raudonis (VP of Post for Bunim/Murray Productions), Howard Brock (Emmy-winning editor and President of Runway, Inc), and Terence Curren (editor/colorist, founder of AlphaDogs, Inc). The discussion will be moderated by Debra Kaufman of StudioDaily.com.

Be prepared to ask questions and take part in a unique and informative evening.
