    Enabling/disabling FXs

Just wondering if anyone had come up with a workaround for switching effects on and off, just like you would in AE, to check the before/after.
I just realized today, whilst demoing PPro 2 at a clients place, how much handy this way of handling FXs is.
    Avid's way is way obsolete.
    Anyone? workaround?

BTW: I was on PPro2 four hours today, and it crashed twice, and froze at least 10 times whilst speed-cutting. Guess I'am too fast for it :-) Nice interface though...

    Re: Enabling/disabling FXs

You can do one of two things.

Delete the effect to see before and then Ctrl-Z to undo and replace it, Ctrl-R, Ctrl-Z....till you'd seen the difference enough times.

You could also use the split screen to see the effect --one side before, one side after.

    cheers,

    Re: Enabling/disabling FXs

That's what I've been doing, but you can only disable or preview the last effect applied to a clip.
I was wondering if there was a workaround to enable/disable ANY effect applied to a clip.
Ex: clip001 has a 'flop', a 'resize', a 'region stabilize', and a CC.
What do I do when the client says:
'Could you show me what it was like before the 'resize, but with the CC?
You could try and put all your effects on different video tracks, and just play with the monitoring icon, but that wouldn't allow the client to see let's say V1 and V3, just disabling V2.
Now that I think about it, it'd be nice to enable/disable tracks too:
The way avid currently works, you can't just disable a single track either. You can isolate one, or see a track and all of those underneath, but what if you wanna see just V2 and V3, but not V1....???

    Re: Enabling/disabling FXs

I'll take it as a; 'No, mate, i haven't found a way to preview clips and fxs the way you describe'
    :-)

Seriously, I was just pointing out that I'd like to see some of the other NLEs useful tools implemented in XPP.
This 'linear previewing' of tracks and fxs is so obsolete now, that I do feel it is a handicap in Avid.
Just imagine how much it'd speed up your workflow...
How do you guys get around THAT limitation?

I work effect until I like it, then move on.  If I have a client sitting there, I get input, work it until WE like it, and move on.

I take it your workflow is different?

    Re: Enabling/disabling FXs

Another workaround -- though admittedly a little clunky -- is to add edits to higher video tracks and apply the effects to filler, then monitor various video tracks. Careful not to remove the effect, or you'll have to reapply the add edits.

A better way is to duplicate the same clip on several video tracks, apply different effects to each, then monitor different tracks.

In either case, you can monitor single effects by ctrl-clicking to solo a track, or view combinations of effects by standard monitoring a track -- which displays all lower tracks as well. You can then tailor the combinations by swapping the clips around on the lower tracks.

It works, and when you get the hang of it, it's pretty quick.

    Re: Enabling/disabling FXs

    thanx guys,

    @videoppeli:
Yeah, my workflow differs a bit from yours, as my clients (either unexperienced or very detail-orientated)), keep changing their mind. They constantly want to see 'what that clip would have looked like', hadn't we added the 2nd effect in a list of 8. So being able to toggle effects on/off would be handy indeed.

    @transpics:
' better way is to duplicate the same clip on several video tracks, apply different effects to each, then monitor different tracks. '

The workaround I've been using is somewhat similar to the one you're mentionning here:
I duplicate my clip on an upper video track, then drag the icons of the effects the client wanna see.
ie: if the V1 clip has 4 effects applied to it, and the client wanna see V1 with effects 2 and 4 without effect 1 and 3, I just copy the clip to V2, and apply effect 2 and 4. from there, I can isolate (ctrl-click) either track 1 or 2 to toggle back and forth.

    Kind of pain though...

the main point was: Please Avid, would you just update that? (and secondaryCC, and 720 25p/50p support, and...)

    Re: Enabling/disabling FXs

I'm with you, Miky. The workaround is merely tolerable. The workflow needs to be improved, and Avid should provide a better way.

So try duplicating your sequences...  I know it's not what your asking for, and it would take some creative naming conventions,  but I'm not sure there is much of an option at this point...
