Do I need a dedicated sound card for MC 5

Hello everyone I know this made have been asked before but I could not find it on a search.  I am putting together a new PC and was wondering should I purchase a stand along sound card instead of using the on-board one?  I think the one that is build on the motherboard is 7.1 redlink. Smile

Realtek HD ALC 888 works fine at the laptop.

At desktop I use X-Fi Xtreme Music.

    Both work fine.

But if you building a PC the X-Fi will be a minimum cost.

Many users prefer and use Soundblaster Audigy cards with Media Composer. Realtek cards work well in HP Avid qualified platforms, but seem to be problematic in other makes.

Yes, make sure that it is a PCI and not a PCI-e and SB is what we use

Why does it have to be PCI and not PCIE?

    Thanks

    Thanks

Previous versions of Media Composer has shown errors using PCIe cards for audio and fw, the system seems to expect a videocard or a dx - matrox card on the PCIe slots.

Brave souls might do a test with MC5 and PCIe cards for audio, please tell the forum about your findings.

Re: Do I need a dedicated sound card for MC 5

    Hi

I have been working with Creative SB Audegy for many years.

Since MC5 I have moved to WIN7. I had some general audio problems with my SB on WIN7. All sounds apears to have some "metal" effect and they are not sound naturly. Short search on the web found out other people have this problem too. Maybe this is a driver problem (same audio card sounds Ok under XP) or maybe this card is too old for WIN7

Anyway I have moved to the internal RelTek HD audio card and everything is working OK over here

Thanks for telling Dor, maybe W7 finally has solved this old onboard audio prob, for now, I love my Vista 64 sys and have no intentions to move to Vista SP 3, interesting to see if other users makes the same experiences with W7 as yourself

A dedicated sound card is not needed unless the onboard audio does not work with MC. hth

Re: Do I need a dedicated sound card for MC 5

I'm using the onboard SigmaTel HD Audio Codec . I know that SigmaTel has been problematic for many people but I've not had any problems with it from Avid XPress Pro 5.8.4 and now MC5. I'm using the Vista 64-bit driver from the Dell site (my machine is a Dell 690).

Re: Do I need a dedicated sound card for MC 5

It is advisable to use the default Windows audio driver (if any) for a given audio card, or just the driver supplied by the manifacturer/motherboard vendor, without installing the accompanying software and configuring the card for stereo output even if the device is 5.1 (and the like) capable.
