Hello,
I keep reading about how amazing this product is with MC and other video editing programs.
Anyone using it with MC4?
So the big advantage is that you can capture with an HDMI cable instead of a firewire cable and that you can do HD monitoring.
I have to be honest, what does HD monitoring really mean?
I have ready the specs on videoguys about it:

But I still don't quite get it.
Can anyone enlighten me on this topic?
I probably don't need it if I don't really understand what it is ;) but still would like to understand it better.
thanks,
Simon
There is a very extensive thread on this in the Mac section of the user groups. Wayne, from Matrox is hosting the thread and it covers just about anything you would want to know about the MXO2 mini, both Mac and PC.

okay.
Thanks for the link.
MC 4 does not contain the drivers necessary for use with the MX02. MC 5 does. Avid will not support the MX02 on any version prior to v5.
In agreement, Unity. In Disagreement, Discussion. In all things, Charity.

My understanding is that you can't capture with it in MC.
But you can within another NLE.

For now the mxo2 mini is JUST FOR MONITORING with MC5. Avid has said that down the road they will be providing an SDK for all 3rd party hardware developers/partners. With that Matrox will be able to not only enable input, but also make the entire family of MXO2 I/I devices compatible. (As will any other 3rd party hardware vendors).
The biggest advantage of Matrox MXO2 family devices is their flexibility. PC or Mac. Desktop or Laptop. Apple, Adobe or Avid.

I have the MXO2 mini and MC4. While MC4 cannot capture thru the MXO2 mini, you can capture within the Matrox supporting software utility. I have noticed that the MXO2 mini is somewhat balky at identifying HDMI sources/output format. I've had to fool around a great deal to get it to work properly. I really hope Matrox issues better software and the Avid drivers are more robust. Right now, I don't have much positive to say about the mini.

Capture at which format?
m2t, avi?
I have a Sony camera that shoots in AVCHD and I'm looking to get the Avid Media Composer 5. I read that it'll be able to import AVCHD files. I just want to make sure that I won't have to transcode the AVCHD files first because I know that was an issue in the previous versions.

Instead of hijacking this thread (which is about the use of the Matrox MXO2 Mini with MC v5), you should start your own thread pertaining to your question.

The Mini will capture to any one of the Matrox formats supported by their proprietary codec, which includes Matrox DVCAM,DVCPRO,DVCPRO50,MPEG2 I-frame 422, uncompressed HD and SD. These codecs are available at the Matrox website. The issue I've had with monitoring is in getting the MXO2 Mini to recognize and transmit HDMI output to my Panasonic monitor. The mini firmware automatically detects input format. It seems to have trouble properly sensing the resolution and scan type, requiring multiple shutdown and restarting until it hits the right one and sending this on to the HDMI output port.
I was hopeful that the Matrox capture utility would allow capture to Cineform Codec, but, that doesn't seem to be the case. Ideally, an alternative capture codec would be DNxHD, however, this isn't the case, either. The capture codec is in an avi or mov wrapper. Hopefully, Avid MC5 can read matrox codecs in the mov wrapper, or importing captures from the Matrox utility is useless.
According to the specs, the Matrox Mini requires a PCIe slot. My computer has PCI-X. Are these incompatible? Does anyone know if the Matrox will work with PCI-X.
I have a fantastic editing assistant. He stays by my side when I edit...doesn't talk too much...and thinks I'm a genius! Check him out here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQVkYaaPO6g
