Hello;
I just wanted to ask about the student MC5.
I just earlier this year purchased the MC4 student version and have been learning it slowly to be able to use it exclusively, the thing i'm really worried about is that I cannot afford to purchase a full version of MC5 and I think paying for another student version of Avid, especially so soon is terrible.
I really love the product but its worrying me that in the future say even if I purchase a student version of MC5 in another year will I be having to student upgrade again... until I can afford the full version but then have to dish out another 500$+ for the upgrade?

Hi John,
No information has been released yet about upgrade pricing, so no one can say. Please be patient.
thanks,Carl

Seriously!!!!
I guess in my haste I missed that - that's awesome!
Thanks!
That is of course assuming that your purchased before Mar 1, 2009...
"Beginning September 30, 2009, students with academic versions of Media Composer software (versions 3.5 through 4.0 purchased on or after March 1, 2009) will qualify for complimentary upgrades for four years from the date of software activation."
John Nicholls:I think paying for another student version of Avid, especially so soon is terrible.
Even if students did not get free upgrades for four years, it's really only $300 again for students, so that's still quite a deal.

Hi guys,
i'm having a bit of a problem here.
Last year i bought the MC4 academic version, and i was told i was entitled to the free upgrade to MediaComposer5.
When the time had come to upgrade i tried to uninstall MC4, but the uninstaller was broken, it said it couldn't remove all the files, so i tried to manually delete it.
I then downloaded the MC5 .dmg, installed it, but couldn't activate it immediately, can't remember the error code given at the time.
Now i'm at home, i have to work on a school assignment (video editor at RITS Brussels) and can't get MC5 to run (trial period already ended, and can't activate it with the code given to me). When i went online i could apply for a new serialnumber, but for that i have to type in the code on the dongle, which is a problem because my software was software activated, so i have no dongle.
Then i called the number whith which you can activate through phone, and i had to give a service acct number or something like that, which i could not find on the box/manual/cd/...
I'm a bit at loss here, and could really use any help.
For now i'm gonna try reinstalling MC4, activating and deactivating it, then reinstall MC5 again and try to activate with the code i have.
Yes, it's getting frustrating because i paid about €300 for this software package with free upgrades and i can't even use them..
So, how do i proceed after reinstalling and uninstalling everything..?
Thanks,
Matthew
For a mometnt i was really excited because i found a page of avid where i could check if i was eligible for the upgrade, i gave in my details, and got a smile when i read this:
"Congratulations! You have successfully upgraded to Avid Media Composer Academic 5.0.
Here is your software license number: xxx
A confirmation email with your software license number has been sent to the email address you provided. Please keep this email for your records.
System ID: xxx is now registered, including the customer information you have provided."
I immediately restarted MC5 and tried activating it, gave in all my info, Again, and afterwards it said that i have reached maximum amount of activations for this system id. Oh the frustration... I took screenshots if anyone wants/needs to see those.
Please, help me :)
You need to contact Avid and get them to de-activate your sys ID. then it will work again.

Thanks very much!
Called them and explained my situation, they sent me an email within two hours regarding my case.
However the email didn't help me, i'm still stuck with the same error message like before..
Still waiting for their reply.
Your computer will need to have a internet connection to reset the activation code.
Did you fully uninstall the previous version before installing the current version? What OS version, QT version and Media Composer version are you running?
Must think of something clever to go here...
I did not succeed in uninstalling the MC4 version, it said uninstaller encountered error or something, even though it was the one that came on the install disk.. I think i even tried to do it manually..
Meanwhile the email support just stopped responding after I mailed back saying that their method didn't work!
A teacher of mine sent me an email with a man who sells these academic versions and maybe he will be able to help me.
All in all, i am absolutely not pleased with how this all turned out.
