I need to create some bone-simple text-only lower 3rds on PS7 and import them in Avid. The problem I'm running in to is the text has no alpha channel. Can someone point me to a tutorial that can help?
Thaks for helping a Photoshop noob..

Why not just create the lower 3rd in the Title Tool?

Go to select, then select all, then save selection. It should create an alpha channel.
Good luck!
WWLD?
You Open a new file in PS set the background to Transparent. A transparent background will give you an alpha channel.

Kenton.VanNatten:Why not just create the lower 3rd in the Title Tool?
The links to the Photoshop tutorials are great, but I'm wondering why not use the built-in Title Tool in the first place?
He might want to use some specific PS effects, like emboss or textures. Of course, that's not technically "bone-simple".
But that's my guess and I'm sticking to it! ;~)

All: Great feedback!
The reason I want to use PS instead of Avid's title tool is simply to learn to do more in PS. If I can figure out how to create text tiltes in PS, then I can branch out and do more with PS.
I saw the online tutorials. Good stuff! BUT, my PS7 does not have an Action for the Video Set as shown in the tutorial. I went to the load options window, and as best I can tell, there is no action for it anywhere.
Any ideas on that?
Thanks all.

Firstly, I strongly recommend that you learn to use Marquee first. Marquee will do pretty much anything that PS will, and it has the major advantage from your point of view that you don't have to leave Avid to use it.
If you still really desperately want to use PS, here's a simple step-by-step.
First, export a reference frame from Avid in PSD form. Make sure that you export both fields, native resolution, RGB. Open that PSD image in PS7 and adjust PS's pixel aspect ratio to match your reference.
If you want a background strip for your text, create a new layer and make the strip on it. Adjust opacity, lighting, whatever until you're happy. Now select the title tool in PS7 and type your text. Play with whatever effects you wish. When you're happy with the result, hide the background layer and save a copy as a PNG file. For reference, unhide the background and save your PSD version too.
Now import the PNG file into Avid as RGB, alpha inverted. It's ready to use.
Alternatively you can import the PSD file as a sequence. What that will do is bring in all the individual layers that make up your art as mattes. You can then individually control them using the effects tool.
But I'd still get my head around Marquee first.
Marquee gives me a headache

Me too.

For me Marquee text graphics are a huge improvement over any imported keyed text files. Text from Avid FX is a maybe even better than Marquee and easier to use. So I guess I am saying the quality jump is worth a wee headache IMO
AndrewAction:Swallow the bitter pill and enlarged graphic satisfaction is guaranteed!! At least that is what 75% of my spam folder tells me daily
Though I understand your point Andrew' it took two days to finish some titles with basic motion in Marque while it would have taken half a day to finish the job in AE ( import and rendering included). When I get hold of some spare time I'll give it a go. Thanks for the Advice

Spare time? Now you said it...
I've been saying the same thing for 10 years about Marquee and each time i go near the blighter my head just gets wrecked. It is and always has been painful and awkward to use for anything other than simple text. And that being the case there is nought wrong with the Title Tool for same.
Anything fancier - off to PS or AE we go.
I don't think Marquee has had much in the way of any upgrade or developement since it's release and so i have just steered clear of it at all cost.
Having said that clients never seem to come in and ask for text to be made specifically with Marquee. Now i wonder why that is...?
