I'm trying to find the correct settings in order to make a m2v file from Squeeze such that it will appear correctly on a 16x9 television, and be in letterbox on a 4:3 television. I don't want letterbox or pillars on the 16x9 display.
I have made a DVD using Encore. My DVD player is set for a 4:3 letterbox. On a 4:3 television, the 16x9 menu displays properly (letterboxed), but the video is squished side to side and will not letterbox, no matter what I try.
Can someone help with this issue?
Thanks.
Clay
The only way I have had success with is to make seperate 4:3 and 16:9 versions in Avid.
In the authoring program create a VMG menu as first menu and 2 VTS menus. One of the VTS menus is set to 4:3 and the other to 16:9.
The end result then depends on a combination of setups in your DVD player AND your monitor.
Thanks for the continued dongle support
The official way:
Make only one movie, make it in Squezze at 16:9.
Normaly, a DVD player should be setted to the ratio from the TV attached at. So, on a 4:3 TV, if the DVD player is corretly setted to 4:3, your 16:9 movie will appear letterboxed by your player.

What is editing? It´s the process of transforming a collection of badly focussed or horribly framed shots containing reversed screen directions, flare and dirt into a smooth visual statement of the script... ... for which the director takes the credit!

That relies on the disc having the 16:9 flag on it though. Otherwise the dvd player would letterbox 4:3 discs also.
I'm not familiar with any pc authoring apps but in dvdsp you set the disc (or individual titles on the disc) to be 16:9 and then choose whether it should be letterbox or pan-scan on a 4:3 tv.
Well, I've recently created a new m2v file via Squeeze, with the 16x9 DVD preset, and "Maintain Aspect Ratio" selected. The resulting DVD displays the menu properly, but the video is still squished on my 4x3 TV.
I hope someone can provide some further insight?
I have been battling this same question just this week. I shot SD 16x9, edited and exported via QT movie with the 16x9 preset. I then imported into Encore and no matter what setting I used, the DVD menu was letterboxed but the movie was squashed 4x3. I finally exported the movie with the hdv preset and imported the m2T file into Encore. Encore recognized the 16x9 and displayed properly. It took a long time to transcode, but the final product is nice. I was tempted to reinstall quicktime because this is not an efficient workflow.

Follow Andrew Actions advice, author both a 4x3 and 16x9, give the option to the viewer which one to watch in the menu.
jwrl:Could you not tell Encore to interpret your footage as 16x9? From memory, a right click on the asset should have give you an Interpret As... choice.
The trick here is to do this before transcoding otherwise this option is not available.
