Title Tool Ignores Aspect Ratio - Any way to change?

The documentation seems to indicate that the title tool will adopt whatever aspect ratio the composer windows are set to.  I'm using 3.1.3 and this doesn't seem to be the case with either the title tool or Marquee.

I have a 1080i project being cut in 4:3 (has lots of old 4:3 footage in it) and the title tools refuse to open in anything but 16:9.  Am I doing something wrong or is there a workaround?  The only solution I found so far was to switch the project to NTSC to make a title and the switch back.  Not ideal.

    Am I missing something?

    Thanks for any help.

What aspect is your Composer window set as?  I believe Title Tool follows the Composer window.

It's set to 4:3.  That's what I thought too and that's what the docs say but it just isn't so.  It opens in 16:9 anyway.

It may be because HD video is only 16:9 and so in HD projects it would ignore the Composer aspect ratio.

If you're cutting it as a 4x3 delivery, then you could edit the program in 16x9 HD and apply a Reformat before output.  Or just cut it in SD because there is no 4x3 HD.

Thanks for the tip but it had no effect.  Still ignores the aspect ratio set in the composer window.  It seems it takes it's setting from the project format.

    Kenton.VanNatten:
Or just cut it in SD because there is no 4x3 HD.

I guess I could.  I've been cutting in HD because on export it looks much better when encoded from DNxHD to MPEG 2.  For some reason which I've never understood, transcoding the HD footage to SD (DV50) for output from Avid looks way too soft and isn't usable.

I guess I could just switch it back to HD at the end before output.

    Thanks.

    Right, that's what I'd do.

I can't understand this. I am doing many projects in HDV within 3.1.3.2.

What do you mean cutting an HD project at 4:3?

You chose this when you import?

Re: Title Tool Ignores Aspect Ratio - Any way to change?

I'm really cutting a SD project.  But, it has HD 1080i footage added to it.  The final product is 4:3 SD.  As I said, using the HD footage in SD looks very bad on output.  I've found that trasncoding everything to 1080i has much better results even though the final product is SD.  Doesn't make any sense but that's what I've found.  The problem is the internal downsizing of HD to SD in Avid.  It looks so soft it appears out of focus.  Upsizing all the SD to HD, although not perfect, actually works better.

Re: Title Tool Ignores Aspect Ratio - Any way to change?

I am editing from time to time a TV show at which I am doing subtitling at HD trailers.

The final project is as yours, SD. I use the import options I show you for the imported HD clips.

The final output is very good for my eyes.

    See here:

    Cinepolis.

I did all editing with 3.1.3.2 and the subtitling also with the Title Tool.

All of the trailers are HD 1080 or 720 or 480.

Even when compressed for the web, it looks very good.
