    I\O Error

    Hello,

I have some serious pc problems. I was trimming the sequence in the timeline, and suddenly (probably during an autosave) the program was frozen. These are the error messages I received after a while:

    Exception: Disk-IO-Error, filename F:\AvidMediaFiles\MXF\1\msmFMID.pmr

Exception: Sys-Error, status: 1117: The request could not be performed because of an I\O device error

There must be something wrong with my internal F-drive on which all media is to be found. Reading this drive with other software also gives errors.

This happened while I was working with AVID, so I hope you guys can give some advise?

    Thanks,

    Rob

    Re: I\O Error

    Hi Rob,

The first thing I'd try is deleting the media databases.  Exit Media Composer.  Go to your Avid MediaFiles folder, and find the files called msmFMID.pmr and msmMMOB.mdb. (Look in all the numbered folders inside Avid MediaFiles.)  Delete them. Restart Media Composer, and the system will rebuild them. See if that fixes your problem.

    good luck,

    Carl

    Re: I\O Error

and if the problem continues, your next step is to rename your existing Avid MediaFiles folder and create a new Avid MediaFiles folder (the best way to do this is to visit the audio tool in the tools menu and select create tone media and target your F drive) Once created you can now populate at the desktop files from your old Avid MediaFiles folder into the new folder.  Do it systematically, date modified would be your best bet and do it in small enough batches so you can identify the offending file once you find it.  Delete the problem file if necessary.

    Re: I\O Error

That helped, deleting the 2 files. But now I got another message while playing back the sequence: Spring Buffer Timeout. And when I click ok, after a while I get the same errors as in my first message. Is there a way to prevent this from happening?

    Re: I\O Error

Now that you deleted the files - this error is telling you that part of your sequence is corrupt.

Time to use the process of elimination of the media method to determine the corrupted peice in the bin or you can always get a back up of the bin from the attic.

    Re: I\O Error

OK thanks for the recommendations, but I would be very happy with some help in that.

I suppose that the corrupted file is among my todays work. Would it be clever to concentrate on todays created media files (realizing that the Media Files Folder is 304 Gb!). Or could the problem be totally somewhere else, I mean not in the segment that I was working on today?

How and when can I identify what file is corrupt and causing the trouble? Is there somewhere a manual for this proces? Could not find it in HELP.e

Besides I can give som extra information on the problem. Windows gives these errors at the same moments as the AMC errors:

windows was unable to save all data for the file F:\AvidMediaFiles\MXF\1
The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your
    computer or network connection

    or

windows was unable to save all dat for the file F:\$Mft
The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your
    computer or network connection

and when I try to delete (within windows explorer) the 2 files I now get a message that it can't be done because of an I/O error.

    Re: I\O Error

The first thing that I would try is to delete the precomputes that were created today. Nine times out of ten, it's a rendered effect causing the problem.

As for deleting that file, it looks as if you may have something failing in the drive chain. Possibly even the drive itself.

    Re: I\O Error

    Hi Ron,

    butterfly:
How and when can I identify what file is corrupt and causing the trouble?

Follow Todd/BLKDOG's suggestion, and if you're still having trouble, try this next:

Step 1. Mark in and out around half of your sequence.  Press Play In to Out (the 6 key on the top row of the keyboard).

If an error occurs, there is corrupt media in the marked section.  Proceed to Step 2.

If the marked section plays without errors, there is no corruption in the marked section.  Move to Step 3.

Step 2. Mark in and out around half of the section you marked in Step 1.  Press Play In to Out.

Repeat Steps 1 and 2 marking smaller and smaller sections until you find the corrupt media.

Step 3.  Mark in and out around the other half of the sequence.  Press Play In to Out.

If the section you marked in Step 3 plays without errors, there is no corrupt media in the marked section.  Proceed to Step 4.

Step 4. Mark in and out around half of the section you marked in Step 3.  Press Play In to Out.

Repeat Steps 3 and 4 marking smaller and smaller sections until you find the corrupt media.

At the end of this, you should have determined where the corrupt media is, or that there is no corrupt media in the sequence, and the problem lies somewhere else.  This is called the Divide & Conquer Method.

    good luck,
    Carl

    Re: I\O Error

I suppose the precomputes are the Media Files that have a long number or how do I recognize them?

    Re: I\O Error

F: disappeared from the list! I guess it crashed. I never had this before. What should I do if I want to have a chance to save the data on it? I have back ups of most of the stuff, but I loose a few days work and some other stuff that'll cost me a lot of time to redo.

I was thinking of getting myself a RAID 1 with 2 new (1Tb) disks. Is that advisable with AMC, or would it slow down the processes too much and make AMC instable or something??

    Re: I\O Error

I have Raid 0 for the media drives that I use for logging and capturing, also to store my precomputes on, all media is able to restore if I get a crash,

For images, project files and things I musn´t loose, I use a Raid 1 , safe and slow.

If you are looking for a standard one drive solution, a Raid 5 would be what I recommend.

    Re: I\O Error

What about retreiving data from the crashed disk. How would you try this if you wanted?

    Re: I\O Error

There are companies doing this sort of things, there also are specialized restoring applications and methods, if you aren´t sure of how to do it for yourself, you might damage more than you solve if you don´t do it in the correct way from the beginning

edited..  an old trick might be to put your disc in the freezer for a couple of hours, if you are lucky, you might be able to run it once to pull all, or some, media from it, without changing anything inside the disc

    It's in the freezer now.

I wish I had made some copies last night when it was still breathing.
