Hi all,
I hate to be this guy, cuzz I know this happens ALL THE TIME, but can someone point me towards a download for 7.6.2. I recently upgraded to MC 4 and it's compatible with 7.6.2, but of course I cannot find it on Apple.com nor on oldversions.com.
Also, can someone remind me why Avid can't supply this on their website?
Also, is it really true what Alex Lindsay said on the last MacBreak Weekly, that people within Apple want to see Avid run out of business for dropping the Mac platform a while back?
Thanks

A mis-directed quote from a decade ago still gets a lot of play, amazing!! Avid never intended to "drop" Mac from its operational lineup but the rumor had it back @ 1998 NAB that Avid was to discontinue writing Media Composer software for the Mac platform so it could concentrate on a Windows based solution. Although Avid and Apple have had their working relationship strained over the years since Apple introduced FCP, Avid's Mac base editing software continues to be a big part of its line up and continues to do so. Marketshare of Mac vs Windows had actually increased recently when Apple switched to the Intel chip. Windows Vista OS was a bust as well.
As far as QT 7.6.2 goes Todd Sanderson posts on the Mac forum http://community.avid.com/forums/t/44210.aspxa link to locating versions of QT but unless specifically stated in the readme notes would not recommend installing an unsupported version of QT as that could effect performance

From what I have read you are incorrect. Avid focus on Windows was because Apple dramatically changed their platform. They reduced the amount of PCI slots, thus forcing Avid to create and shoulder the cost of the PCI Extender box. It was a difficult choice but Avid NEEDED a platform that was able to physically support its hardware cards. Apple wanted to sell pretty small boxes, Avid needed 3 full length PCI slots. Apple was not about to change their box for ONE small company.
Second, Apple did not create its own editor. It was a Windows programs created by Macromedia headed by Randy Ubillos - one of the originial creators of FCP. This is why you see the heavy Premiere/adobe influence in FCP. It was still in development when Apple decided to buy it and the programmers make it strictly Mac.
It has very little to do with Microsoft.

Did you already try to use the newer QT and run into problems? I'm not sure about the most recent releases of Avid and QT working together, but I can say that in the past, I've quite often been able to run newer versions of QT than Avid was "officially" compatible with. It might be worth a try to use the newer QT first just to see if it works. If it doesn't, it would be pretty easy to uninstall the newer QT version and install 7.6.2. Please note that I have not searched the forums on this subject, so I apologize if there are already known issues with this particular combination.
As to where to get the older versions, the official apple link to older versions is http://support.apple.com/downloads/#quicktime. My guess is that the "7.6" link would be 7.6.2.
Note that the newer version is only 7.6.4, which is a small version increase. This could mean that the changes are small things like security fixes that may have no effect on Avid, which could mean that the newer version might actually be a better version to run even if it isn't "officially" qualified by Avid.
Please post back to this thread if you try the newest version and have problems.
Thanks,
Larry
Yeah, about version 7.6.4
It broke a good number of my apps including After Effects, Squeeze and Synthetic Aperture. Well, maybe broke is a harsh word, but After Effects would crash when choosing audio options with a Quicktime codec in the render queue. Squeeze would not load any quicktime presets and not provide AAC audio encoding with quicktime, and Synthetic Aperture would not launch at all without an update.
So I would say stay away from 7.6.4 for now... at least on Windows.
I uninstalled 7.6.4 and re-installed 7.6.2 and things seems to be good.

Very true..... here is a little teaser... what was the name of that program created by Macromedia? Also did you know that Media 100 entered into discussions with Randy Ubillios to use that software as the interface for the Media 100qx. That ended up being the vincent hardware and premiere.

(which is ironic because the software is for post production)
Dom, I never wrote that Apple created its editor, and You're correct, they purchased an existing editor and made it Mac only, etc...
As for the Mac not being fit for MC at the time of the attempted drop, Yes, that was the late official Avid excuse when customers got mad for the unsavy decision, isn't it a coincidence that Avid developed hardware that couldn't be accomodated into a Mac right when MicroSoft came around?
When Apple introduced the 9600 series it was a full six slot machine. The next series, G3 followed by the G4 CPUs were 3 slot CPUs only (until the G4 533) and was not capable of handling the printed circuit boardsets internally being developed by Avid.
One major problem with the ABVB series was you could capture either Analog or SDI depending on the Top card purchased on the ABVB board. The solution was Meridien. The Meridien BOB or Breakout Box contained the Falcon video board which when purchased with the SDI top allowed either Analog or SDI capture.
Avid engineering was looking for a CPU with more than 3 PCI slots and since Apple had none in their lineup looked at Windows machines. Here is a trivia question for you... What was the first windows CPU qualified to run Meridien software. MC 8.x? If you think it the IBM Intellistation M6889 M PRO, its a wrong answer. Avid intended to ship an Integraph CPU however, Integraph end of lifed that CPU prior to first ship. Second prize was the M Pro with its 4gb internal harddrive.running Windows NT 4.0 which required an FAT boot drive which limited useable hard drive space to 2gb.
Avid purchased Softimage from Microsoft for its 3D modeling software. The Meridien series eventually was replaced by Adrenaline but not until 2003. While it might appear that Avid was actively promoting Windows bases systems over the Mac, it was the compatibility factor that drove Windows sales during that time period. Microsoft's influence on Avid was merely coincidental
