SONY HDV camera (Z5U) shot 1080i 24p. Using a SONY Z7U as a deck. Firewire. Having capture issues - same issues on MCA (HP8400) at work and Mac Pro (intel quad core) at home. Both systems up-to-spec.

Have newest versions of MS and FCP. Neither can see this format without burping timecode error messages every two seconds. In short, I've created EVERY project type in MC and tweaked every possible setting in FCP's video settings.

Totally able to capture 30i NTSC no problem... but obviously I'm going to have to online this thing in HD.

Clues? I'll even accept After Effects as an answer at this point!

did you try turning the timecode track off when you digitise? Not sure about the 24p format, but that is my trick for most other HDV digitising.

Have you tried capturing in a 1080p/24 project?  Also, what kind of storage are you using?  FireWire is notoriously bad for TC dropouts (IME), which is part of the reason I avoid HDV material over FireWire. 

Can you try a deck with Serial Control and see if the TC issues persist?

You'll have to go 1080i project if the footage has 24 with pulldown. Timecode errors are proably due to the the 30 and 24 fps conflict.

Wow - lots of folks bored on a Sunday! Didn't expect to hear boo until tomorrow.

Yeah the display on the Z5U actually reads HDV1080i 24p. Stunned me to. Shooter in California insists myself and three other editors on this project are dumb for not being able to use these five tapes.

Tried 1080p project. Refuses to see video, probably because raster size of the HDV stuff is 1440x1080. 

Tried 1080i project. Only successful when switching to 30i. Timecode issues in HD prevent capture.

Until I find a solution, I'm going to move forward with the DV25411 stuff. There's a good chance I'll only need 30-40 seconds of the footage in the final online in a month. Perhaps any of you know of a solution? Perhaps MC v4.0.4 will support? Perhaps SONY Z5U cheated for that one camera and made a 1080i 24p format that bombed so they discontinued

is it possible that there is some proprietary software that is supplied with the camera that you can use? i know with consumer level cameras there's usually a cd with some software for editing. maybe there is something from sony you can get that you can export a quicktime from...

I'll definitely chase that idea. Good one!

Normally I'd stick the HDV tape in one of those DVC_Pro adapters so I could bring it in HDSDI from either our 1700 deck or our 1400... However neither one understands the 1080i 24 not 1080p. Doh!

PS - tried 720p but the 1280 raster makes for a nice error message of "...video no loner coming into the system." 

I believe the Sony Z5 records both Native progressive and progressive via Progressive Segmented Frame (PsF) which records to an interlaced signal. Not sure how to handle the PsF in Avid. No experience there.

But that may be how you got 1080i 24PsF.

The fact that it is listed as 1080i means that the 24fps is inserted with a pulldown into a 59.94 interlace format which is why 1080i should work. Don't know what is up with the timecode. Try turning the TC track off in the capture window to see if it can be captured that way.

My thoughts exactly... but no dice. It's the same on all five tapes shot over three weeks. Same camera, same shooter. When capture window is open and timecode is displayed, the seconds "flutter". Two seconds forward, one second back for a few frames, repeat.

When in capture mode, video is seen just fine. Audio is there too. Try to capture in any which way, and...nope.

Same with Final Cut too though, which makes me think that it's some nutjob format in that particular camera.

Camera plays other tapes (1080i/60 and 720p24) just fine.

MODS - worth promoting? If bobcat is right with PsF on Z5U, then it should at least cross the desk of those at Avid who integrate decks/cams.

I'll start a thread on a few of COW's forums too.
