RANT warning
To me the points are pointless. When I questioned them originally it was suggested by a forum administrator that there was a plan for them. Several years later it seems the plan is still tied up in the planning process.
Regardless of the nature of any post the number of allocated points are remarkably similar. Divide the number of points by the number of posts to try and get any indication of a members relative contribution and the results are sad.
A first time poster with a post header of Avid Sucks and content along the lines of I have a AMD motherboard, realtek soundcard, Windows 7 and GEforce video card and Avid wont boot up ends up a points average of 13.
Larry on the other hand with nearly 9000 posts has a points average of only 11.905. Kenton's nearly 6000 posts swings in at 12.586 but this does not include 1000's of posts and points under the his previous (xyedit) identity which "could not be transfered"
To my understanding Larry, Kenton and most of the others here could not careless about points or number of posts but participate for the purpose of helping others, receiving help when they neeed it and discussing issues affecting our craft.
Thanks for the continued dongle support
Yes I would like more to have Avatars so I could see the faces of the people I am talking with.
We have had this on Liquid forums.

George,Most avatar supporting forums have anything but avatars that show you the faces of the people.Avatars tend to be of the anonymous and graphically weird sort.People with real personality and charisma don't need avatars.Regards,Douglas
PS. By the way George you have a lot of personality and charisma - so you do NOT need an avatar!
There is nothing to do with personality or character Douglas.
The need to see comes from a feeling not a thought.
I like to see how people are.
You have your photo at your site.
Where is the harm?

For those of us who take a hideous picture - the camera isn't kind to everyone, unfortunately.
Larry,
I don't try to play it open mind here but there is the option to upload an avatar IF you want.
It's not obligatory to anyone. But then as a child of democracy myself, if the majority vote for not
I have to accept that.
Guys,
Of course, the essence of the forum is its content. How we help each other and sometimes give and get feedback to and from avid.
For years I've been to the IBC in Amsterdam. Every time you leave with bags full of information but also, USB sticks, key-chain hangers, pens, a t-shirt and other advertisement gifts. Do we need those? No, but these "advertisement relation gifts" are a very common form of marketing.
If there is a need for the points then it is to see how active a user is. But I don't see any harm in avid handing out small gifts to people like Larry, Andrew, Swithaus and other very active users as a token of appreciation of their positive contributions.
