Hello all,
I have a 1080p/23.976 project and i need to create dvd deliverables. When i try to modify the clip to SD 23.976, i get a message saying that this conversion is not supported. I am running 3.0. All i need is to make an SD DVD, and when i try to transcode the original 1080p timeline by doing send to sorenson squeeze, then transcoding to dvd 16X9 lg, i get an image that has severe color distortion, which i figured that there would be a problem. So basically, how do i create a high quality sd dvd from a 1080p timeline?! Thanks,
Tom
In order to do SD outputs, you need not convert the clips or sequence, you simple change the project format (Format tab in the Project window) to a compatible SD resolution. From there, you can do SD outputs. After that, it's just like any SD DVD you make.
Job,
Thanks, i will do that, for some reason i thought i had to modify the sequence, then output. Thanks!
A process which is simply and brilliant.

Changing the format tab to 23.976p NTSC in Thomas' project is easy enough...can anyone tell me what one would do in a 720p/59.94 project where there is no tab to switch to a SD res? Assuming I want to get to a SD DVD.
Thanks, JR
That's right...an xw8000.
Output a qt ref for Avid DVD.
Or a qt movie for ConvertXtoDvd which is excellent.

Is there a particular reason why there can be no tab to switch to SD in a 720p/59.94 project? I go out from the timeline to a standalone DVD recorder via firewire.
Ah,
its been a while since I've been on the Avid forum! Good to be back.
Yes, there is a good reason why different project formats don't allow you to switch to a different resolution and frame rate. Only compatible switches are allowed. In other words, for a 1080p/23.98 project, the equivalent SD format is 486p/23.98. The only difference here is the frame resolution while the frame rate remains constant.
For a 720p/59.94 (Varicam, HDX) Panasonic project, there is no compatible 486p/59.94 format. In fact, SD only technically exists as 25i and 30i as far as I/O is concerned (as noted in the Avid project table when one starts a project). 24p on SD NTSC is permissible by the advent of pulldown but actually the tape is really a 30i tape. Of course, the tape can be re-interpreted to obtain back the 24p if desired when digitized.
There is no standard for applying pulldown for 60p footage on to NTSC.
Hope that helps, David.

Job ter Burg: JohnnyReboot:Is there a particular reason why there can be no tab to switch to SD in a 720p/59.94 project? The framerate difference would not allow proper metadata tracking. The solution is to use V4, open an SD project and open your 720p/59.94 sequence. It will create a duplicate of the sequence, automatically speed corrected/converted.

Job, what is the new, magic feature in MC v4.x that enables this solution? AMA? I read through the v4.02 ReadMe but...
Thx guys, JR
v4 allows mixed frame rates.
I trust orange juice more than I trust most people.
Codec Moment: v4 allows mixed frame rates.
Oh yeah, that...my duh.
Thx!
