hi all,
i just moved to apple so there's a few adjustments to make.
back on pc i use to map shared drives or folders as my media drive, i also used to map my own shared folder as virtual drive. i use this method to localize my consolidated media, in case i don't have any other drives.
how do i it on mac?
i tried to make a folder as a drive image and mount the drive on the finder, but avid doesn't see this mounted folder as a drive? any ideas?
thanks,
gg
I don't think this is a good idea. Just use an external drive or capture to "Macintosh HD" if you're stuck without one. You can use the consolidate feature to copy the media to another drive later.
To even try this I would probably create a 50GB or greater hard disk image in Disk Utility - which is just going to be a wasting space until it is filled, and then when filled it would be necessary to create an even bigger image to which the media would have to be copied. Plus as you said I'm not sure Media Composer is going to recognize it and allow it to be used. And if you lost that ONE file you have lost it all.
How do you mean you tried to make a folder as a drive image? You need to use disk utility to create a disk image. This will mount in avid no problem (at least it just did on my laptop).
That said I fail to understand the benefit of doing this (on mac or pc). Why not just use the root level of the c drive if that's where the media's going to be physically residing anyway?
yes, i do use disk utilty to make a disk image and i do use the root level on the drive.
what i'm trying to do is, if i want to separate certain media of a certain project on a drive, if i have only one drive.
for instance, a folder named say "a", will contain the project folder and the media.
or say on an ongoing project you need to capture more tapes and i want the new media on the same drive with the one that's being edited. back on pc, i made a folder, share it, and let the second computer mapped the shared folder as a drive. the media will be captured without bothering the editing procces, with scanning and all. after the capture procces is done, move the new media to the root with all the rest of the old media. by moving, it will be much faster because it is on the same drive than copy.

Okay. Well as I said, creating a disk image and mounting it worked fine for me. The disk image was created as 'test image' but the mounted volume appeared in avid's media creation settings as 'disk image' because I hadn't named the volume itself.
What settings are you using in diskutility?
Have you done the 'alldrives' console command? I didn't need to, but it may be that I had done it in the past and forgotten about it.
FWIW my disk image was on the desktop, not the root level.
