    .AVI vs .MOV

    Hi

I need some advice about export formats.

There seem to be innumerable ways to export video, but the main ones MC's 'Export' setting offers are .MOV and .AVI.

We just exported a dance video for YouTube with lots of flailing arms. The .MOV is clearly better resolution but fast movement produces horizontal artifacts - quite unpleasant to look at.

The .AVI exports a larger file, has worse resolution, but no artifacts.

Any reflections? Any suggestions for improved settings? Or any superior formats we don't know about? Happy to pay for plugins etc, on recommendation.

    Many thanks

    J

    Export a QT reference.

Open Sorenson and import file as source.

In the Audiences go to the iphone preset (or Apple TV if you want HD) and apply the preset. Squeeze it

Thanks for the continued dongle support

    Thanks Andrew

Just attempting that workflow now. The QTRef also had artifacts which isn't encouraging.

Also not sure our Sorenson (v5) has ipod or AppleTV settings - is this a recent update or did I miss it?

QT ref LOOKS like it has artifact when played back on a CPU monitor. The encode should not have them.

In the box under Audiences choose workflow.

Select Devices and you should see iPhone and iPod

Select Set Top and you should see Apple TV

Just to let you know, inital experiments appear successful.. the aspect ratio keeps coming out wrong but sure can tweak it.

The file size is ludicrously small for the same result - less than 10% of the original.

Does this mean QTRef is the best way to export - then run it through Sorensen or similar?

    Thanks

Best? there will always be debates on that.  It is the way I have chosen to do it 95% of the time for 7 or more years now

Thanks for the continued dongle support

    Re: .AVI vs .MOV

Hey Andrew, looks like you're the local hero - haven't edited in about 5 years now, started in 1991 (!) with the MC, last platforms were AudioVision (yes, I used to cut picture on an AudioVision..), Express at home (mit dongle) and a short stint on the Symphony but that was all a long time ago.

Getting back into the game, I'm getting ready to transfer 8mm and Super8mm, and have the option of either .mov or .avi files - what are your recommendations? I don't know yet what I'll be editing on - Avid, FC, or iMovie - any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    I'd go .mov

    a) you're on a Mac - Apple invented .mov

    b) Avid and FCP (and iMovie) are all QT-based.

    c) Quicktime is a more widely accepted format in general.
