I've been very surprised that there seems to be no stand-alone DVD Recorder that will record at Hi-Def... (at least I can't find one) Blu-Ray burners are a dime a dozen if you don't mind waiting for an encode in the puter- but if you want to just crash record a little- direct to disc like I used to with a regular DVD Recorder at SD- there seems to be no such animal that i can find.
Sometimes it was just so easy to run a one-off crash of a sequence or Dv tape to DVD for a client without all the authoring and encoding.
Anyone else wish they could do this? Or is anyone else surprised that they haven't made such a device?
Just curious- thanks!-

There are stand-alone Blu-Ray Recorders available.I have no idea how many there are on the USA market.
But just last month, here in Japan, Sharp and Panasonic added some new recorders with 2TB disks for storage. They can also record direct through HDMI from e.g. a computer with a suitable output, So recording an MC sequence would be possible with the correct set-up.
I could, for example, record my HDMI signal out from the MojoDX straight into a Blu-Ray burner. Either to save it on the harddrive for playback, or onto a Blu-Ray disc.
I know that the USA has started selling Blu-Ray recorders. However I have a feeling that their capacity on the HardDrive is from 250GB up to 500GB, at present.
It is just a matter of time.Regards,Douglas

Cheap Mojo DX HDV in HDMI out??
Still something to be said for having a Sorenson, Avid DVD, and a LG Blu Ray burner set up at an eighth of the price.
Thanks for the continued dongle support
Interesting, but what's this video input? Composite?
Such unit would need HD-SDI for me to take it seriously. And it should handle 23.98p, 24.00p framerates. I can find nothing about that.
yeah Andrew- Suggested list price* for this model (U.S. Dollars): $2,550.00! There's another one on there for $1,995 but still that's pretty pricey when a blu-ray burner is like $50... It's weird but thanks everyone for the info- I looked and looked and couldn't even find ONE- anywhere.
Would save some time, though for some things... too bad. Oh well... I guess for reference a Standard Def disc will have to do for now!
Thanks for the info guys-
evansmalley:but still that's pretty pricey when a blu-ray burner is like $50
But this is not just a blu-ray burner. It is a Blu-Ray recorder with harddrive for recording HDTV.The ability to record via HDMI etc. from other sources is an extra.
But I am surprised to see the prices in the USA.The cheaper Sharp machines, here in Japan, with only a 320GB hardrive is about 700USD
A 1TB Sharp will cost about 1900USD.

So what does "professional" mean? It's for people professionally recording TV-signals?
Job ter Burg: So what does "professional" mean? It's for people professionally recording TV-signals?
Quite correct, Job.I claim lack of sleep as an excuse
In fact the model referred to doesn't even have a TV-decoder in it!
I was, of course, referring to the consumer side of JVC - which is an entirely different story.

Back to the original question.
As Evan says,"....without all the authoring and encoding"So the answer is, as I suggested from the start, a Blu-Ray recorder (of the consumer type) The ones that record HDTV.He is not asking for, or looking for a professional recorder.
As the USA market has different models than Japan I have no suggestions.
But I guess a search for Panasonic, Sony or Sharp Blu-Ray recorders might come up with something.Just make sure you check the inputs available. Most have firewire and many have HDMI.

Douglas
here's some information and speculation http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10065439-1.html

The cheaper Sharp machines, here in Japan, with only a 320GB hardrive is about 700USD
Local price difference between a cheap (WD Green range) 300GB drive and an expensive (WD Black range) 2 TB disk is only about $375US
AndrewAction:WOW $1200US to go from a 320GB to a 1TB harddrive.
I have also wondered about that one Andrew.By the way 2TB has been introduced by Sharp and Panasonic.I don't remember the price at the moment.Maybe just as well I don't.
I think it was 3 or 4 years ago that Sony introduced the first player/recorder for Blu-Ray(Of course there never was an HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray war in Japan , as in the USA. So nowadays Blu-Ray is fast taking over from standard DVD)In today's newspapers I could see adverts for about 15 different models.250 and 320 GB machines are 50% of what they were 1 year ago.
I was surprised to read the link that Sasha provided.I thought that Blu-Ray recorders were already on sale in the USA.Looks like Evan will have to wait a bit on them.
