Moving media files from mac to PC

    Hi

I want to install my avid software on a mac (moving my dongle across too) to allow capturing of an event in downtime. (I only have a mc laptop )

Then once ive captured the footage to an external firewire drive, i want to copy these files onto my PC running same avid (having moved dongle) and start editing.

Can anyone explain how i do this and what the pitfalls are. How do i make them show up in the pc project etc etc.

    Cheers

    peter

    No pit falls at all.

Just make sure you format your ext hard drive(s) so that it can be read by both Mac & PC which will entail either installing a utility like MacDrive on your PC and formatting the drives for Mac or formatting them for PC and installing the correct driver to read them on Mac.

Copy the project folder onto same said hard drive once you have captured your media, attach drive to PC, copy the folder into your Projects folder on PC and off you go.

    AAh right - I see

I was presuming that a project created on a mac would be no good at all for a pc.

Ive already got the hard drive mountable on both platforms.

NB  If i merely copied the omf files created on the mac system into the omf folder on the pc system, how would i be able to access those files and bring them into the new pc project?

    Cheers

    Additionally Neil

Will the media files still be recognised by the project once copied to the pc projects folder, if i copy them from the external drive to an internal drive. ie the external is purely for transportation.

Yes the project created on your Mac will read on your PC.

Media is media - if you copy it from ext to int drive you will find that the databases will get re-written on the PC internal drive if you already have media in the OMF/MXF folder. After that all should be available to you.

How have you done this?  If you've formatted your drive as FAT32, then yes, you'll be able to read and write on both systems, but you'll have a maximum file size limit of 4 GB.  (Well, 4GB less 1 byte, but hey).  You should either track down Paragon's NTFS for Mac (I use this myself) or NTFS 3-G.  These will allow you to read and write NTFS formatted discs on your Mac.

Alternatively, you could install MacDrive, MacDisk, or TransMac on your PC.  I've only tried MacDrive, which I've found very reliable, so I can't comment on the other two.  These allow you to mount a Mac formatted drive on your PC and read and write.
