I'm using the stabilize effect on a shot, simple 1point track and seems to work well.
But when I switch back to Output the result is half off of the screen and I then have to move the shot back to the middle, is this normal? Am I missing something obvious?

Are you holding down Ctrl when you're positioning the tracker, ie. trackers? Because when you hold down Ctrl both the reference and layer trackers are positioned at the same point. My guess is that you're only moving the reference tracker to the point you want to be stable.I don't know which DS version you're on but check out "Using the Stabilizer in the Effects Tree" either in the Help or in "da thick book".Page 238 in the DS10 manual.Good luck!//mike
Ah, makes sense, i'm not holding Ctrl, sounds like the problem.
Thanks mike, forums are great
The CTRL comment is probably where you need to start.
But also realize that any stabizied shot wil start showing the edges of raster at the points where the stabilizing was most severe. So the resultant image may need to be resized / repoed to work in your situation.
And the highest quality way to do that is to add a translate node to the Global input of the stabilize effect. This way you are just adding math to the process and only "passing through the DVE" once. This will give a better looking image rather than adding a second DVE after the stabilizer to repo the result.
Hope that makes sense.
Jef
The Stabilizer has a built in DVE tab, no need to add a second one after.

True. I tend to use the Transform nodes. Same quality. Personal preference.
Jef or mrmikster, could you please shed some light onto when to use a tranform node in preference of the actual DVE's own transformation controls? Except for the obvious use of it as a multi-DVE transform controller.I feel I've missed out on something when it comes to dealing with this. In certain circumstances I've noticed a quality improvement using a transfrom node but I don't think I've grasped the general idea.//mike
I tend to use transform node instead of the DVE in the stabilizer/tracker. Again, that is merely a personal preference. I just like to know that my stabilize is my stabilize, and that my additional repos are separate.
